The Manchester United Thread

Tbf Fergie's intentions in latter seasons were unclear, to me anyway, selling Rooney and while the likes of Chicharito, Cleverley, Anderson etc. remain seems rather bonkers to me.

Fergie did break his philosophy as well to sign RVP in final season, for glory, pretty much.

Ferguson bought RVP and Kagawa to replace Rooney. The original plan was Kagawa and Lewandowski, but he didnt want to go anywhere but Bayern.

The point stands as to now, we can all speculate on past but the present is of importance, I don't see what makes Mata any more valuable to us than Rooney at this point.

Mata is a better playmaker.

LVG might prefer Rooney to be a bit more dynamic as a 10 though, who knows. We should get a few answers by Sunday.

When I watch United games, I don't see Rooney until he scores a goal or get assist. He was always slow on the ball, but in last 2-3 seasons it's getting to the point it shouldn't be tolerated any more. And that man supposed to be Uniteds go to guy when attacking. Why? So he can slow down every attack, then try some Hollywood ball and completely be out of position when ball is in the box? Thanks Rooney for everything, I wont forget your goals, your effort and everything else you're done on the pitch, but I have zero feeling about him and even more, I'll be happy when/if he leaves United. Till that moment, I'll remain blind hope he'll get arsed again and actually play for the club, not for the cash.

Mata is easily a better playmaker. Rooney should be considered a creative striker, and nothing more. If LVG wants a more powerful option at 10, then go with Herrera, or Di Maria for a more driving option

I don't think his attitude is questionable, he plays very similar for England, so I think his game has just got slightly worse. Like someone said on T.V who I've forgot the name because Rooney started so at such an early age at the top-level, he's practically had all the miles a seasoned pro would through his legs.

Whatever the reason he's playing like this, after what he did in past, it shouldn't be tolerated. Both Ronaldo and Messi still have the drive and they won everything Rooney won at the same age. Rooney once were at par with Ronaldo and Messi. He doesn't have the same drive he had back then. Did he lost his passion for football? Could be. Should we care? He'll no. United is way to big to fall, let alone being Rooneys hostage.

It's an assumption Rooney hasn't got the drive, most likely he's just not the player he once was.

You can aim a lot of this at our other players as well, not just Rooney, Valencia, Nani, Cleverley (to a lesser degree), Hernandez.

Rooney's finishing is excellent. More than any player his game has regressed because of lack of midfielders. We lacked the CM who could link up defense to attack so he had to drop back and try to create. With age he lost his pace, aggression which was the asset for him. Stick him to forward role and create chances he will score loads of goals. He has played the game as #10 for few years and he has best goals and assists stats than any #10 in the league.

Most annoying thing about him is his instinct to pass the ball to the wings but IMO that was something to do with how we played for years. Now that our wingers suck it looks wrong pass to pick out.

For all the **** he gets he scores many goals and creates chances and that's what strikers are about. People just expect Rooney to be a striker and a creator which IMO he is not able to do anymore. If we have to sell anyone then hopefully it's RVP. I love him but for ManUtd Rooney > RVP. We have a beasty #9 in Falcao and I don't think RVP can play any other role than #9 anymore. He was excellent in his younger days playing as a winger or a creative player but he is not good anymore. Hopefully we retain all of them but if at all we have to miss 1 then it should be RVP.

3 left, 2 to go ;)

I still remember watching Rooney between 2003 and 2005. I clearly remember thinking that this guy would definitely become the best player in the world. He was quick, aggressive and absolutely bursting with confidence. He didn't mind taking a shot from anywhere and backed himself to the hilt. He has still gone on to become a very good player but I still feel that he could have become so much more. That's how talented he is

Torres set a new fashion in football: Get a ridiculous contract (money and duration), and laugh your *** off all the way to the bank.
Jokes aside, I like Rooney, and I think it would be a pity if he heads down that road, which personally I doubt it will happen.

Rooney stats.

I see in one of papers today that despite our **** season last and poor start to this we still have record revenues for this year :) Would post article but cant remember which paper.

Yes but when used in right context stats are the most useful way of judging player's importance.
Only if you don't bend it. Statistic can be used to prove lot of things, even something that's not true. I would love to see Rooney's pass accuracy in final third for example, how many times he's been dispossessed or how many misplaced passes he had in his own half. I would like to see average time he holds the ball when United is on counter attack as well as number of touches he takes before passing the ball. There are probably even more aspects how useful player is.

Misplaced passes? lol. I'm sure you would find that Valencia as the most safest player in the final third if you go by misplaced passes. Players who try to create lose possession, they are risk takers.

It's a simple stat. No player has contributed more to the club than Rooney in the last 10 years.

Asking for stat like average time he holds the ball when on counter attack is ridiculous, it's just a strawman argument.

Surely watching a player and analysing actual gameplay is the most useful way way of judging a player's importance? Stats are good and all, but they're still lacking at this point.

Now that you mention that, direction of the passes as well would be fun aspect to see.

I don't care how much Rooney contributed. Due his behavior I only care about him now.

No, it's not. If fair aspect of the game, just like goals and assists. Hernandez scored a **** load goals, but he didn't contribute to overall game. Inzaghi was amazing goal scorer, but he needed a midfield that would carry his lack of creativity and pretty much everything else. Point is, you only see him when he scores or assists. That's not a bad thing if he can stop doing this where he's average at best. Let others create, he became issue, not solution.
