The Manchester United Thread

Surely watching a player and analysing actual gameplay is the most useful way way of judging a player's importance? Stats are good and all, but they're still lacking at this point.

Yes watching the player is the most useful way but when you argue about player's consistency for about 10 years and that too for a striker what stat can prove his impact more than goals and assists?

Now that you mention that, direction of the passes as well would be fun aspect to see.

I don't care how much Rooney contributed. Due his behavior I only care about him now.

No, it's not. If fair aspect of the game, just like goals and assists. Hernandez scored a **** load goals, but he didn't contribute to overall game. Inzaghi was amazing goal scorer, but he needed a midfield that would carry his lack of creativity and pretty much everything else. Point is, you only see him when he scores or assists. That's not a bad thing if he can stop doing this where he's average at best. Let others create, he became issue, not solution.

Yeah with the midfield we had, had he stopped we could have just packed it in and became a midtable team for years.

Ah, who's making strawman argument now?
We are talking about Rooney in last 3 seasons. Yes, he scored and he assisted, other than that, he didn't do much at all. He's the part of the problem now.

I think what Rooney's lost more than anything is his first touch (which never was great btw). When you re an attacking player a good first touch makes a **** of a difference.

Then you haven't watched him much. Btw what more can he do more than scoring goal and assist? Goal keeping and tackling too?

I have not missed United game in over 6 years. I can safely say I watched United and Rooney more than average fan. He probably can't do anything more, someone else might. Don't get me wrong, it's great he scored as assisted as much, but his overall game is average. And again, whole argument was Rooney not being the same player he was 5 seasons ago. And that's true, no other way about that. Why? I don't know, and I don't particularity care. After what he did, he has to earn support in every game. Whole point is, he doesn't contribute when attacking unless he scores or assists. You don't see him on the pitch. Play him as a striker, tell him to stick upfront and don't mess with creation. Tell him to play as a poacher. He's not creative enough, he doesn't have good technique. He's not fast as before and even his physical strength is gone. He doesn't run as much as he did before, he's decision making is bad.
Anyway, enough with this, it's getting boring now. I said everything I wanted, I'm afraid we would just run in circles.

I honestly think you guys kind of ruined Rooney. I know that sounds such an odd thing to say but he looked so ridiculously good at Everton and he hasn't lived up to his potential. A large part of that comes down to him becoming a sort of odd AM, a role that he just doesn't play that well. He hasn't been bad there, not at all, but he certainly hasn't excelled in the way that he could have if he had just been allowed to focus on playing upfront.

Actually Rooney is the one who saw himself as a 10. Rooney's biggest issue is that he didnt have the drive that Ronaldo did. His fitness could be appalling at him, smoked quite hard.

No way United ruined him. His downfall is all about him. Rooney during 2005-2009 was world class, no doubt, where ever he played, left, central or as a out and out striker. After that, he wanted new contract, started playing games with United and ******* around even in his personal life. After United sold Ronaldo, he was the main man. He was the striker. And when he played strictly as a striker, he was wonderful. After that only in one season he looked like old Rooney, and that was again as a out and out striker as SAF saw he lost something, but he was still goalscoring threat. And he was. But that season whole team was on another level. Nani was brilliant, as were Valencia and Carrick. Whole team clicked that year. I think that was the year when Rafael made that stupid red card tackle against Bayern and Robben scored a pure wonder from a volley after a corner. Not sure though. At the end of that season, did Rooney asked to leave just to get bigger contract or he genuine wanted to leave, don't know, but SAF bought Kagawa and RVP to replace Rooney for the next season. That never happened.
So no, United shouldn't take fault for this one, it's all on Rooney and his decisions.

United ruining Rooney is one of the stupidest things I've ever read... look what he has won.... look at his assist and goals during his time here.... it's in the world-class bracket easily.

Tbf something has changed with him whether he has just aged worse than others or whatever but wayne from 04-10 was incredible even his pace was something else for a lad his size, maybe fergie tried to change the way he played to suit a more united style but that hat trick against fenerbache was just amazing.

Don't think he is great at recovering from injuries either, the one in 2010 when fergie continued to play him and then he went to the world cup took alot out of him imo.

He's just got worse, he started at top-level a lot earlier than most, it was bound to take it's toll sooner rather than later. One can not play with the intensity and aggression he did maintaining it for a whole career (well until he retires).

Everyone's over-reacting here though, he hasn't been that bad and the whole team has been poor so bit unfair to judge him individually.

He has to work extra hard to keep his fitness because of his body shape, but he wasnt doing it.

However since last season he has been doing this a lot more, keeping himself in better shape. I think there is a lot of flak against him because we sold Welbeck who lived and breathed United, and rooney held the club to ransom. But he is still excellent

Was our stand out player last season when the going got tough, no one can question his attitude IMO.

Maybe Januzaj came close, but apart from that no one was near him.

I think he is relishing his role as elder statesman, for club and country, he is holding player only meetings at England so players can get things off their chest. Rooney's issue is that its very obvious when he isnt playing near his best, whereas some players can be poor and not have it noticed so much.

I can imagine how well that's going.

"Hey guys, how about we go bang some grannies to relax?"

If it makes them win like they did against Switzerland, then bang those grannies!

Didn't see the press conference today but apparently LVG hinted towards buying Falcao at the end of his loan (not that you'd say anything different atm).

But I'd be disappointed, don't get me wrong, Falcao is a fantastic player and I hope he hits it huge during the loan, but to pay £44m or whatever it is for a 29yo at that time, will be too much.

I hope he's just been bought to give RVP and Rooney a kick up the **** and bang in the goals for us this season.
