The Manchester United Thread

Jones constantly picks up injuries, as does Evans. Neither are better than Shawcross from a defensive point of view, maybe with the ball... slightly... look at Evans lately and he makes a lot of mistakes when he tries something though.

What we need is a no-nonsense defender who can play it short to Blind who drops in a lot of the time when we have the ball, it's not like we need some fantastic ball-playing defender.

We just need someone solid, not injury-plagued, dependable and commanding. He fits all of them for me.

Evans is a better defender than Shawcross, by someway.

What Shawcross has in his favour is good basic skills and very canny ability to stay fit. Like Cahill.

Shawcross is no nonsense defender, very physical and good in the air. Not the fastest, but he's fast enough. He has very limited skills on the ball, Vidic would look like Pirlo compared with him. He's decent shout, but Jones and Evans are better. Only thing he has is pretty much clean injury record.

Exactly this.

I don't think he is, well in terms of Evans he did have a season where he was very good, but Shawcross is more consistent, you know what you're getting 9 times out of 10.

Plus, we don't know if he may improve at United, some players tend to raise their game when they get an opportuniy like this, one most likely he probably wouldn't expect.

I don't expect Shawcross to be an LVG target at all though to be honest. Be shocked if he didn't try something in January, infact if we missed out on top 4 because of it I'd be fuming. Incoming rant - January - pre-scheduled.

Evans has had a lot more than one good season.

We don't know if he would raise his game, but Evans is still a better defender than Shawcross as it stands.

I don't think he is, when Evans was at his peak and best form it lasted 1 - 2 seasons. Apart from that he hasn't hit the heights before or after, whether the injuries or whatever have got in the way I don't know, but it doesn't really help us either way.

Guess the same can be said about Smalling & Jones, although we haven't seen the best of them even consistently for a season or two yet. Don't look like it will be this season either.

If Evans was back at his best, then he's better yes, we can say that I suppose.

Then I would rather look elsewhere. Anymore than 12-15 and its a no from me!

I wouldn't expect any less tbh. He's English, thats always makes you pay premium. Its January window, that also always makes you pay premium. Plus they know you're desperate. But then again, so will everybody else. Can't expect any bargains in this situation.

If evans and Jones weren't made of paper, rojo out injured wouldn't bother me at all.

Evans when fit and head screwed on is very good imo, i do think shawcross has things about his game that we need at the back but evans for me is overall the better player. I'd have shawcross though tbh, can't trust jones to stay fit and can't trust rojo period.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are talking signing Marco Reus, Julian Draxler, Mats Hummels and my beloved club are aiming for......Ryan Shawcross?

You mean the same Hummels we targeted in the summer? And everyone is after Reus next summer. he has a Release clause then.

Liverpool signing hummels or reus is an hilarious thought.

Reus will sign for bayern, real or barca and nobody else if any of them are interested.

Wouldn't Shawcross class as HG too? Not that United would have trouble with that but it's always a bonus.

Not only just HG, he is club trained player too.

Also re Shawcross we have first option on Shawcross.

Manchester United have [a buy-back clause] and they have the first option on Ryan at any price or bid we receive. So if we get a bid for him, we tell Sir Alex and then it's up to him. I think that Alex is being very astute and clever and experienced and you would expect no less from the man."

Yeah because what you currently need the most is more attacking midfielders.

Anyone see Mittens article about us signing Enzo Perez and Strootman in Jan. Also going round were in talks with Kongolo young CB. Most probs all BS atm. Also read a lot lately that Odegaard has nearly agreed to join Real after his father was impressed after visit to the club lately.

Mitten is a good source.

Digressing from the Ryan Shawcross v. Jonny Evans/Phil Jones discussion, it's nice to see Fellaini benefit from the confidence Van Gaal has shown in him. He hasn't complicated things, just gone and done what he was brought in for from the Moyesian reign. He has become an efficient player. I'm happy for him.

And when Ander Herrera comes back from injury, we will have a physically strong and robust central midfield; Daley Blind sitting in front of the defence, whilst (assuming) Herrera partners Fellaini just ahead of him. Or even Rooney instead of Herrera in occasion.

Looking forward to Saturday's clash vs. Crystal Palace. With or without Jédinak vs. Fellaini.
