The Manchester United Thread

Marquinhos is 183cm tall. Thats short for a CB.

So? Puyol was 178, Cannavaro was 176, and they both dominated in the air.

I agree on lack of physical presence, but he's only 20. Still has time to develop his leap and upper body stregnth.

If rumours are true I expect us to line up like this -

De Gea
Valencia,Jones,Evans,Rojo
Blind
Herrera,Rooney
DiMaria,Mata
Falcao

433.

Shame about Shaw. Heard its just a minor knock picked up in training and wont keep him out for next week. Good balance 433 imo and strong bench.

Can't complain about the team at all. Good to see Van Gaal going back to his favored 4-3-3. If anything only complaint would be Rooney should play as striker and Mata as #10.

Di Maria and Young provides width but also provides tactical flexibility to go to diamond or even 3-5-2.

Hopefully today is the start.

Could not agree more!

but the boy doesn't have the leap
Those players all had the leap/positioning to compensate for it. United doesn't need another player who might become good but has big weaknesses you need to work on before everything. We need someone right now, not wait 2 years for him to develop. I wouldn't mind him if only he was backup and United brings another CB as a first teamer.

We have 3 CBs that are good in the air, we need a CB that is good on the ball and don't hit his self everytime is under a bit of pressure, that's why we are interested.
Agreed. But you don't fix one weakness by adding another. Only Smalling is good in the air. Jones is decent ( he does have the tools to be great in air, similar to Marquinhos, he's fairly short but has great leap). Evans, Rojo and Blackett are mediocre at best.

Actually Rojo is good in the air and wins most duals on the ground to. Name one CB who can come in right now and fix everything that is at the top of there game and has no weaknesses?

I guess we have different views about what makes player good in air and vice versa. If you think he's good in air, who am I to say otherwise :)
One CB who would fix everything? In a nutshell, there isn't such player. Closest to that, for me, would be Hummels. I still believe he's world class, however, I would wait till Summer to see if he can recover.

LOL mate all opinion at the end of the day. I aint no CB guru by any means :) Hummels needs to show some sort of form and stay injury free till the end of the season before we buy him imo.

I don't know, to me its just a matter of who he is paired with. Historically caveman+pacey passer CB combinations have worked fairly well.

Plus, the standards for CBs have degraded so much over last few years, you gonna have a bad time looking for someone with no weaknesses. Kompany and Hummels are considered a golden standard for CBs right now, and I still see them making glaring mistakes nearly every week.
