Here are the main points from the press conference:
Louis van Gaal confirms that Robin van Persie is his only injury although Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and Víctor Valdés are all yet to be decided upon:
“It is difficult to say as, in every training session, you can be injured or the fatigue specialist can say he is not fit enough to play a game. And then I have to decide not to use that player. So it’s always difficult to say but the only injured player is [Robin] van Persie.
“It is too quick to say anything about that [a length of absence for the striker].”
Van Gaal confirms he took a risk with Michael Carrick against Sunderland due to Phil Jones and Luke Shaw pulling out of the squad. The Newcastle match come too soon for Carrick though:
“I think it is too early for Carrick. He trained three sessions with us I think because of the players I didn’t bring with us, he was in the 18.
“As a sub you can play 20 minutes, that he can do. He has the experience, he is also a captain. It is not normal that I do that.”
Van Gaal expects ‘a very tough game’ against Newcastle United on Wednesday:
“They always play with a very high rhythm, they want to give a lot of energy and the fans are supporting a lot.
“They want to play football – I like that. I hope it shall be a good game and we shall win.”
Van Gaal on Ángel Di María, his current form and that he feels there is no problem, just a bad day at the office:
“Every player can have that kind of match – Di Maria is not the only player who has suffered a bad day. He can be the best player in the world in the next match, so I think everything is going well. He trained very well and I don’t think there is any problem.
“I have already explained that the higher rhythm of the Premier League is one of the most important aspects but he also has to adapt to a new culture, a new environment and that is not always easy.”
Van Gaal recalls Manchester United’s last match with Newcastle United on Boxing Day at Old Trafford:
“I remember the fantastic goal Wayne Rooney made after a fantastic counter.
“I have seen it again, as always before a match, and I think we played well.
“The win was well deserved: we could have scored more, but it is always like that.”
Van Gaal on Manchester United’s run-in this season:
“You said that before the games at the beginning of the season, when we were 13th – do you remember that?
“And in spite of all the games we had in front of us, we were third. It was 22 November after the game against Chelsea.”
