The Manchester United Thread

Take that moment were he outmuscled otamendi on sunday for example

He was waaay too slow to pick out martial's run to the left...

Martial made the run in behind...rooney delayed...i thought he was thinking of a shot on goal then makes the pass that he should've made 3 seconds ago

I had to chuckle at Mike's line Sunday (paraphrasing) 'that it wasn't a bad result considering you played a man down.'

This stubbornness from Van Gaal steadfastly refusing to drop his captain and infect condoning Rooney's mediocrity in so doing when he doesn't warrant a start at all must be beyond frustrating.

Owen was never the same player after the first injury. The hammy he suffered against Leeds. Same with Torres who tore his. (Forget the opposition.).

Once olayers like that who's whole game is based on speed lose a step they're on the road down. The main part of their respective games went over night.

It essentially boiled down to two factors. Both were relatively young and wanted to get back on to the pitch as soon as possible so rushed their recovery. Clubs also heavily relied on these players so were quite happy to rush them back as well

Its quite sad because Owen could quite easily have broken all sorts of records with his talent. Torres also looks essentially done for a good 4-5 years now

Thing is Rooney's importance as a captain is quite large. It's like with Gerrard now. But cannot be carried for much longer.

Agree with your point but not your examples. Torres and Owen were done due to being rushed back from injuries and not the mileage they accumulated on the pitch. Even Owen admits that if he could go back and do things again, he would ensure he recovered properly from his first knee injury rather than rush back onto the pitch

And by the way things are going, you can add Fabregas to the list

Yeah, but if it wasn't those injuries, it just would be something else. Torres was playing full seasons with Atletico when he was 18, that's just got to take a toll. Competitive sport ain't healthy thing to do, average career will last ~15 years whether you break into first squad at 16 or at 21.

People who last longer are usually regarded as great natural athletes throughout their entire career, and Rooney was never that. Even Ronaldo looks to be declining badly, which goes to show you can't just train very hard and become as eternal as Giggs, Zanetti or Maldini. You gotta be be born with it.

I think also style of play has a lot to answer for too, players who rely on their brains moreso than athleticism will always last longer at the top.

Rooney's decline is more obvious this season than last. It's not even just lack of pace, it looks like he forgot or lost all his skills. He can't control the ball, can't complete easy passes. Looks like confidence issue also.

Would be great if he is back to his best but at the moment we are playing with man down. He is so bad. He is holding the team back, about time Van Gaal drops him.

I really cant understand this "importance". I think its part of the British unfounded obsession on putting too much importance on the captaincy of a team (doesnt happen to that extent in other leagues).

Imho if you re **** you should be out. Period.

Leadership is hugely important. I'm not talking about the armband, but the influence, and it certainly happens in other leagues to this extent.

Funny enough that was the exact moment that came to mind when I was writing the original post haha.

Other moments this season like when he didn't put the ball in the net vs spurs straight away and ended up getting a flukey own goal. Old Rooney would have hit that way before the defender (was it Walker?) ran back to him

If it's a confidence thing, wouldn't Van Gaal dropping him only make things worse? When he gets to decent form, he has by a mile the most goals coring potential in the squad. He has a very good footballing brain.

I don't believe it's a confidence thing, even if it is then time on bench will help him than just playing for the sake of it. There are many examples of players who came back stronger after being dropped to bench and Rooney is one of them in the past.

****!! Nobody is showing the United match tonight. :S

Thanks.
I'd normally stream on Ronaldo7 but I'll give these a go tonight.

I'll multiscreen with the Liverpool match.

Don't mention it. I have a few reliable goto ones, mainly for US Football and anytime I'm bored when we aren't playing and fancy a watch. Came across that site this year and it's been great. Never seems as many ad's to close down either as certain others like firstrow for example.
