The Manchester United Thread

Fergie paid record fees for players from pretty much 1988 onwards. Pallister was a nation record fee for a defender, Keane a British record fee. Fergie bought well, bought garbage, but he/United are a club known for spending more than everyone else coz they had it, they were commercially leagues ahead of everyone else, they are a club known for big/marquee signings, and have been for about 20+ years now.
He replaced Cristiano Ronaldo with Antonio Valencia...

Ferguson took over in 1986 and from then till ManUtd won first title, Livepool spent more than United, Spurs spent as much and Arsenal just shy of United's spend.

Also in PL era, before Fergie retired, Liverpool,City, Chelsea spent more than United.

The statement made was was United aren't known for marquee signings, which they are. The dont sign them for the **** of it, as with Madrid (**** me they were bad at one point, one per window i think it was, hellava team though). but they are known for big signings.

but doesnt matter, apparently you're all about fulbacks now :)

But your point was we spent more than other team which is not true.

Btw I agree on signing for big fee but not Marquee players. IMO marquee players are already world class players. From what I remember none of those big signings were world class players. Only world class players we signed were RVP, Stam, Veron. Rest all were young players with plenty of potential or some unknown players who made it big here or few players from lower teams who made it big here.

Oh no, i meant more in line with the marquee thing, the british transfer record most of the time is/was Uniteds.

Damian and Shaw backed up by Varela and Rojo. That's as good a balanced quartet as you could wish for.

You do realize Shaw and Rojo are out, and Darmian just came from injury and still visibly lacks fitness he had when season started, right?

Why he steadfastly refuses to play Varela, a natural full-back who's both looked promising, albeit briefly, and is Uruguayan, a Country that generally breeds solid defenders; and would rather play a winger out of position is a continued mystery to many Utd fans I know. ****, even Jones has experience at RB.

And he's right, because Valera was **** every time he played.

Even with the injuries, Utd are in a far stronger full back position than most teams the league. But Van Gaal refuses to utilise the natural ones at his disposal.

Even with injuries? I don't know what are you smoking, but it's the weekend, so pass me some.

Valencia out. Shaw out. Rojo out. Young out. The only thing they have left is bunch of unproven youngsters, and Darmian, who will need to get rested eventually because of fixture congestion

I hate this criticism Woodward is coming under all of a sudden. I know united have never been known for making marquee signings but we have no choice now of we want to remain competitive especially since Fergie retired.

Marquee signings are fine, if they fit the team. That's what Ferguson did, and it worked.

Woodward starts to seem like a jumped-up marketing guy, who doesn't understand football for **** and just tries to buy big names for the sake of driving sponsor revenue.

Again, you can't just keep adding to a position just because. Utd have a sound quartet. Injuries happen. If you have to then dip into promising youth like the kid who came on at ours last Sunday to have a short term solution so be it.

And he's right, because Valera was **** every time he played

I wouldn't know but I hear a lot of Utd fans who were impressed with him in limited action and would MUCH rather see a natural FB play there than a converted winger.

Yup, even with injuries. There's a lot of clubs who would be very happy to have Darmian and Valera to chose from. Jones even. At least he's experienced there.

Which all leads back to the original quote of these three. Injury's happen and you muddle through. And then you've got the potential future issue if Utd go splash in desperation on a FB now, he may well be blocking the development of a Borthwick-Jackson or Valera who now needs to be regularly involved at his age. And not forgetting the irony that he binned Raffael this past summer.

It's like Rafa thinking he needed a 30/40 man squad at ours. If he had zero options at all then yeah, go for a short term solution. But he does.

And he's right, because Valera was **** every time he played.

You are wrong, so very wrong, are you watching a different team? Varela put in a great performance in CL against Wolfsburg as already stated, go re-watch that game and tell me what he does wrong.

Also one other thing, Darmian also looked utter ***** against Liverpool until LVG actually moved him to his RB position rather than again playing him in LB where his positioning was literally all over the place.

Quite frankly this fullback talk is nonsense, if there is one position where we don't need to strengthen right now it is this one. Give Borthwick-Jackson more of a chance and Varela while there is a few injuries, we have plenty of players to come back. I hate this buying just to cover injuries when you have two very capable young players who can be given a chance.

Or buy proper CB to partner Smalling and move Blind to LB position for now. At least that's a long term planning.

Adding to a position because you have no players available, is "just because"?

I wouldn't know but I hear a lot of Utd fans who were impressed with him in limited action

I wasn't.

Name one top club that would be happy with that pair.

FOUR longterm injuries in the same position is not something you can just "muddle through".

It's like Rafa thinking he needed a 30/40 man squad at ours.

Do you think you would have had all those dramatic CL campaigns, if Rafa didn't insist on rotation and a lot of depth? Thin squad is fine for the league. With European games it's entirely different story. I wouldn't be surprised if LVG was serious about Europa League, because a nice trophy might as well keep him in the job for another year. And for that, he needs depth.

Tyton man, we see this completely differently so we'll leave it there as this is just going around in circles.

You might want to offer your services to Van Gaal mind. He'd love that kind of defensive PR in the media.

He won't sign anyone van gaal doesn't ask for.

Got 12-1 for Southampton to score a penalty.
I've a bad feeling that Blind will bring down Long at some stage. :S

United is the best team for freelancers, I can do some work and watch the game at the same time.

Going from the Liverpool game to this one is like having intense *** with your chick and you guys decided to watch some black and white movies of old. That's what it feels like.
