The Manchester United Thread

Tbh regardless, I am still mightily ****** that we continue to sell players to United after they completely shut us down on Rooney few years ago. Also Matic is a good player so god knows why we like to strengthen direct rivals. Nonetheless, it does look like we replaced Matic with a younger and more multi-dimensional player with a little spare change on the side to boot so thats the positive I suppose.

Not sure about the more multi-dimensional. Bakayoko doesnt spray the ball around the same way as Matic.

Not something Chelsea need, but certainly something United need. With 2 very good but young defenders, Matic gives an experienced spine to the side

He's nowhere near past his prime, and he's an excellent Carrick replacement.

Nowhere near past his prime but has not been able to reach his 14/15 levels consistently enough. A fresh start might actually do him a world of good.

Agree on all counts. At United he would play his favoured style, with at least one high energy mid in with him, often two in Pogba and Herrera.

Chelsea get a player who fits Conte's style. Not as accomplished a passer, but a hard runner who is combative and carries the ball well

Matic does not exactly spray the ball around at all. What he does do is push it to the forward players or creative CM like Fabregas quickly after winning it back setting off quick transitions. He is also excellent at winning the ball and breaking up attacks.

The problem that Chelsea fans saw in quite a few matches this season such as the FA Cup Final is that sometimes his confidence looks completely shot. He will be afraid to challenge for the ball or completely miss them altogether. His first instinct would be to pass the ball backwards or sideways instead of pushing it forward. We could have very well had another horror show of a season if he was our main DM and Kante was not here.

And before there are cries of revisionism, yes their were matches where he was excellent. Just has not managed to do it on a consistent enough basis through the season. Only reason he started most games is because Conte saw that we got absolutely destroyed down the middle multiple times in 15/16 season and over-compensated by putting both Matic and Kante there. I suspect he needs a fresh start and he will have that at United.

Well I disagree. He hasn't been as consistent as he was in 2014-15, and a lot of Chelsea fans who will have seen him a lot more than me are saying the same thing. Even if he was still as good as he was two years ago, £40m for a defensive midfielder in their late 20s is a ridiculous price to pay, especially when that money is going to a team that finished 20+ points above us and will be even stronger next year if they sign all these players they're targeting.

You're entitled to disagree, and if you can find a passing DM similar to Carrick for less than £40m I'm all ears

I personally don't think Matic was a great passer at all. Kept the ball moving but did not exactly spray it about. Yep I think Bakayoko will be an ideal foil for Cesc and Kante in a midfield 3.

Matic has very good range, and accuracy. Slightly more conservative at times than Carrick but just as accurate. But also far more physical than Carrick. Moves it quickly to the two in front, but equally can bypass them.

Fabinho is a different style altogether, much closer to Bakayoko, but also cabaple of playing RB

No chance! Quite frankly I'm shocked at most Utds fans reaction to Matic possibly signing. Perfect for what we need. 40£ is not even a lot in today's market for a player a manager wants and fix a big hole in our squad.

Camacho from Malaga if we're going for an experienced player that is similar to Carrick, we could probably get him for £20m max. Julian Weigl would of course be the perfect Carrick replacement. In my opinion though I don't think our next DM has to be like Carrick, I'd prefer someone with a bit more mobility, who's stronger defensively, able to offer a goal threat if they do go forward and most importantly I want someone young. Fabinho is that guy, he's apparently available for £35m...we should be all over it.

Camacho is a year younger than Matic, and doesnt pass anywhere near as well. Also he was pretty vital for Malaga, in what world would they sell him to us for less than £20m in the current fee climate? Weigl currently has a broken ankle and wont be fit till September.

Jose is looking for someone to control the base of a 4-3-3. Matic ticks all those boxes. No idea why being young is the most important factor in all this

totally agree with those saying matic would be a very good signing.we are lacking steel in midfield and jose knows how he operates.cant see anything wrong with this if it happens and 40 mill is a good price, hes got at least 5 years left in him

Good signing but not sure the need for both him and Fabinho, yes I realise the latter can be a utility player, but Mourinho openly doesn't like that.

Fabinho would play right back, he's certainly much better than Darmian there, and Valencia is 32

Seeing rumors that we are after Nainggolan as well. I know, it means nothing, but I will not stop dreaming...:D

I don't see how any Chelsea fan can be happy about losing Matic, say what you want about him but he has been the staple of Conte and Mourinho's midfield to winning 2 titles in the last 3 years.

Although I'd be lying if I said it got me excited, however it IS a signing we badly needed, would be perfect in front of the defence and give more freedom to those ahead such as Pogba.

I just hope we still get Fabinho and two attacking players that will add goals to this team.

IF Mike ends up being right Matic and Fabinho would be fantastic!

Unless they have replacements in mind above and beyond the Monaco lad, I don't get why Chelsea would weaken their squad like that by selling him?
