The Manchester United Thread

That's true, but are Southampton that good, to make us look like a minnow hanging on in a cup match and bringing on defenders to hold a one goal lead?

I am happy with three points, but that's not the way United (or any top club) should be playing.

I mean, apart from the fact we won titles ******** out 1-0 wins away from home

When we got smashed 6-1 by city, Ferguson sent the team out to grind out 6 1-0 victories almost in row. He was lauded for grinding out wins

Really think people have a rose tinted view of how we won titles

Like I posted on another thread recently, 25% of our league wins in our most successful 2 PL years were 1-0. 25%!!!! Ridiculous stat I think.

Everyone got it. It's just a **** point

How is it? Yes we won league titles by grinding out results, but that was then, this is now. The game has developed since then and things have moved forward.

Can you honestly say that if we try to hold on to results like we did yesterday we won't drop points into the future? It's just not a sustainable or a stable winning mentality in my eyes.

Sure it worked yesterday... but to my eyes, it was more due to them missing their chances rather than anything else.

Except the game hasn't really moved forwards on that front at all. Goals per game haven't really changed

More down to good defending tbh. They didn’t have any CCC.

Not saying the defenders weren't good but Southampton had a few decent chances, especially in second half.

I just find it very risky to be holding on to a 1 goal lead as we were yesterday, you really need to be at least trying for that 2nd goal.

Which is kind of where my issue lies, we had literally 0 attacking incentive to get a 2nd goal.

Not true tbh. Herrera missed a glaring chance to make it 2-0 from about 10 yards out blazing over. And Lukaku should of had a second when he hit a tame shot straight at the keeper. Both coming from good counter attacking play.

You are seriously underselling how good Southampton were that second half. If we had 0 incentive, we wouldn't have kept an attacking 4-2-3-1 shape on for so long.

If anything, Jose left it too long to make a conservative substitution. That was my only complaint if any.

True, forgot about them, but I think at that point Southampton literally went all for broke by that point. It was either going to end up at 1-1 or 2-0 I was thinking. But oddly ended at 1-0, not that I complain, but I really didn't like how much we were letting this Southampton team come on to us. Sure they are not a bad side, but far from what we let them be in 2nd half yesterday in my view.

But anyway win is a win, lets hope we don't hold on to a 1 goal lead like that against Palace next week! As they literally can't outplay anyone. :P

I think the whole point here is, were they that good.. or were we letting them be that good?

Considering I haven't really seen them dominate anyone else this season like that... I'd say more the latter of us letting them play and be that good.

They grew into it, with every sequence of passing they gained more confidence. With every half chance they created they gained more confidence. They won every second ball, they pressed, they pushed bodies forward, etc. I personally would've had Herrera on for Mata earlier to try get a grasp of the game, but by the time he was sent on it was mission impossible almost.

Never underestimate confidence in any sport.

Also thought this was a big chance. Can't really fault Lukaku as Aguero, Kane etc would all do the same thing in this position, but I was shouting at him to pull it back to Mkhi. 2-0, lights out, much more comfortable finish. That's even forgetting the Herrera chance.

Should be a totally different game against Palace. But for 40 mins they were very good and should of scored 2 against City. City don’t get that goal on the stroke of HT I don’t think it finishes with them winning by 5. Will be tougher than we think, signs yesterday Hodgson getting them organised. We use to struggle against his Fulham side. Early goal though and they will crumble!

well we won 1-0,struggled at times and were more than a bit fortunate.Must improve if we are to win the title. But we did win,if we lost and performed bad then i could undrstand the criticism but not after winning. This is what jose does

If z thinks that was defensive from Mourinho, he'd best be put on suicude watch the first game after the next Int. break!

This was always gonna be a tough period for us 6 away games in the next seven games, with 2 away trips in the CL. 1 down 3 points in the bag!

We've sat back deep to hold onto a win in 1 game so far this season, if we keep doing it then I would be concerned but I'm not going to worry about us having done it once so far this season

Fair point, I think it's more the fact that when you see other title challengers romping teams of a similar stature, it's hard to be that impressed with a narrow 1-0 victory, which we held on by the skin of our teeth.

I'm still unsure where I think we are in terms of title challengers, I mean I still expect us to mount a challenge, but it's really hard to look past City and Chelsea at this point.

Im sure City struggled against Everton and needed about 10 mins of injury time to get a result against Bournemouth. All teams will have tough games throughout the season.

Anyways apparently a tough hybrid pitch against CSKA. Maybe wouldn’t risk Tony V on that pitch. Also looking at there team, they have some decent players but not great. Dzagoev, Schenikov, Fernandes there best players. Two 35 yr old CBs our attacking players should get some joy there, and there FBs like to stay high. Need to get there get a result and no injuries and get home unscathed for Palace!
