The Manchester United Thread

You know its got nothing to do with not wanting to play for England right? Its just about playing for Albania, he doesnt want to play for Belgium either, has refused all their youth call ups.

He refused all the call ups as he wants to establish himself at the club level before making the move. IMO he will play for Belgium, just that he will play once he establish himself as a first team player for the club.

He seems sensible - one of kind in modern football! Hopefully he doesn't go the same way as Macheda, though, it was a real shame to see Macheda's career go downhill so fast.

Januzaj is nothing like Macheda. Macheda had a memorable moment. Januzaj has been displaying his ability consistently for a while now.

You think he's loyal though? Think he'll sign a new contract now that Moyes has giving him a chance?

"I strive for that [to start more games]," said Hernandez. "I am working towards earning a spot as a starter. I know that my performance on the pitch will allow me to achieve that goal someday either here [in Manchester] or elsewhere for any other club."

Isn't the problem with Hernandez that he is a rather too limited player to actually play as a starter? In many cases he seems like a clone of Ole Gunnar, he pops up as a substitute with the odd goal, but is nothing like as reliable or driven as Ole Gunnar to get into those positions. It isn't like the old days of 442 where you have a dedicated winger smacking balls around the fullback for the dedicated Inzaghi style striker to bash in the net. It's more about players being able to contribute in all phases of the game and I can't see Hernandez doing that.

That is true, but he is reliable. He clearly has a great poaching instinct, but he's just not given enough opportunities to break into the United lineup.

1. Hernandez is not a limited player, he has improved his game massively in the last 2 years. His first touch, passing, dribbling everything has improved, not to forget his eye for killer pass.

2. If Hernandez is limited how is like a clone of Solskjaer? I still can't believe how underrated Solskjaer's overall game is. He played as a RW for a season and we didn't even miss Beckham. Solskjaer's game was not limited in any sense.

3. Hernandez contributes lot to the build up play, this isn't 2010-11 season where he didn't involve much, now a days you can see him dropping deep, holding the all and making pass before making run to the box.

Perhaps I should clarify a little:

1. I see Hernandez as a limited player as the other options at the club are RVP and Rooney, and whilst not purely a box player as in the classic 9 role, he has certainly broadened his game (as you must these days), but not the point of giving him a chance to start over better, more rounded players. If he's going to become a starter, he is going to have to produce in the opportunities he does get, which is largely focused around box play since that appears to be how he is used.

2. The comparison was made between him and Solskjaer as they both play with anticipation and positioning as the forefront of their game. I don't see them as particularly skilful, it is all about being in the right place at the right time. I certainly was not under rating Solskjaer, to do so would be to deny him his proper place, which is in my view one of the best strikers who has played for the club, certainly the most clinical. The reason I mentioned limited is the application of Solskjaer in a managerial sense was largely as an impact sub in order to nick points, quite because he was able to concentrate so well on getting on the end of passes and produce the goods (though he does have other aspects to his game). Hernandez would seemingly do well if he excelled in this limited role and made it his own. I'm aware Ole led the line for several groups of games, and he performed well from what I have seen, but returned to his 'impact' role when the first choice starters returned.

3. If he's able to link up these days then fantastic, I simply havn't seen it, mainly as recently watching Utd has been a bit of a chore, although I do try to keep up with all top sides when I get a chance. Obviously he isn't going to move to a club like United and not grow as a player. I think he's an exciting player to watch though, he always looks full of energy, which as a fan is what you want to see.

Robin hasn't been exactly scoring like a machine lately, so no wonder Hernandez expects at least to be given a chance as a starter.

Couldn't have put it better myself :) He can't really hold up the ball, win headers against defenders from goal kicks, or pass a ball (as well as our other strikers)...but he's an incredible finisher....as such, he can't really start consistently. Luckily for the moment he's happy being number 3/4

RVP scored 6 in 8 this season. Last season it was 5 in 8.
Where did you get that from? According to WhoScored?, he has scored 4 in 8 this season.

I agree in general to what rephlex said, but I think you're underrating Hern?ndez's ability to head the ball - he's a top poacher, both with his feet and with his head (although admittedly to a lesser extent)!
