The Manchester United Thread

Branca's Interview.

Can you give us an update on Wesley Sneijder's situation?

"I don't think there's anything to be updated. This is a topic that I think you journalists are very keen on and it's not the least bit surprising that Sneijder might attract interest from other clubs, some of the biggest clubs in the world including ourselves, so there's no update to give."

But there have been some bids made for the player...

"No, there haven't been any concrete offers and we haven't been waiting for any. He's just getting on with his job, as we all are. We have to get through this period, these last 50 days: we know what we have to do, and that's what the situation is."

So you are saying that Sneijder is not for sale?

"That's right, he is not for sale."

Bring it on: Jonny Evans ready to battle with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at Manchester United

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans believes he would not deserve to be at the club if he was not prepared to accept fresh competition for his place in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans.

Two seasons ago, the Northern Ireland international appeared a worthy successor to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

But the form Evans showed as a regular stand-in deserted him last term.

He was overtaken by new boy Chris Smalling and, despite the departures of Wes Brown and John O'Shea to Sunderland, now faces an additional threat following the big-money arrival of Phil Jones from Blackburn.

However, Evans is not fazed by the challenge.

Now 23, the Belfast-born player has been around long enough to know battles always have to be fought at a club the size of United.

"I have always thought that being at a club like Manchester United, if you can't accept a challenge of someone wanting your spot, you don't deserve to be here," he said ahead of tonight's United States tour opener against the New England Revolution in Boston.

"That is what Manchester United is all about. You are constantly being tested.

"It is down to you, whether you are good enough, or whether you are putting the effort in to play for the first team."

Evans was speaking at a Special Olympics event in Boston, organised in partnership with United's foundation and their main sponsors Aon.

It was the first in a series of initiatives during the course of their three-week tour aimed at using the Special Olympics to offer sporting activities for local youngsters suffering from learning disabilities.

Enthusiastic

Evans was an enthusiastic helper of the 31 kids involved, although his thoughts never strayed too far from next season, and the opportunity to wipe out memories of his side's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

"That defeat will stick in the lads' heads," said Evans of the 3-1 reverse, when Barca produced a performance the equal of any from a club side in the history of the game.

"These lads have been so successful throughout their careers but they still remember defeats.

"I am sure they will have that at the back of their minds coming into the new season.

"Barcelona have set the standard. They have gone to another level.

"Maybe 10 years ago, when Manchester United went into Europe, there was a gap to bridge and we managed to do it.

"The challenge is there for us again. Hopefully we can get closer to them."

Evans' fellow defender Rio Ferdinand has, meanwhile, hailed Fergie’s £50m-worth of business already this summer.

Blackburn defender Jones, England forward Ashley Young and Spain Under-21 keeper David de Gea have all completed their moves to Old Trafford, making up for the retirement of Edwin van der Sar and the departures of John O’Shea and Wes Brown to Sunderland.

“It is just what the club needs,” said Ferdinand. “Three of our most experienced players have retired, so the manager has reinforced certain positions on the field.

“This club is always evolving. That is what has happened since I have been here. I was part of it.

“That is what you aim to do. It is not about your personal feelings. It is about the club becoming better and more stable and continuing the success we have had over the years.

“We have some very young players coming through the youth team already, so when the manager adds players of quality like Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea, it can only improve the squad, increase our longevity and continue our success.”

Can anyone post a stream here if they can for the match, Don't want to have to pay for MUTV as I'm going away in 2 days anyway so won't even be watching the other matchs on it.

Mufc team v NE Rev: Lindegaard, Fab, Evans, Vidic, Raf; Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Young; Rooney, Berbatov.

New kit is horrid.

RE; Team.

Very, very strong. Apart from obvious changes (Rio, De Gea, Hernandez), very possible that could be our team next season. Can see Fabio and Rafael starting a lot more games now, especially with Evra getting older.

Rio has been at the club for ten years now, how quickly have those years gone!

Manchester United currently leading 2-1, half time subsitutes Michael Owen and Federico Macheda score within 5 minutes of coming on, both side footing one on ones into the corner, NE's goal a majorly deflected free-kick.

Young has been superb, Lindegaard looks handy Fabio looks very fit and Anderson a little chubby. Decent game so far.

Macheda has scored again, fantastic finish. He's on a hat-trick. I'm going to put money on him to score again, looks very very sharp!

You do realize they are playing New England right?

A New England side who are in mid-season, while we're playing our first game since the end of May.

Young was impressive before he came off, always wanting the ball and beating his man repeatedly. Macheda with two excellent goals, and Owen scored with a good finish too. Lindegaard has made some decent saves and showed good handling skills.

Giggs, Obertan, Park and Mame-Biram Diouf on - Nani, Young, Anderson and Carrick off.

The MLS is nothing to brag about, and I'm from the USA.

Most of the teams play **** football

I did lol at the commentators at half time getting all excited because Ferguson said something about having to perform well, which they decided meant that he now thought the MLS was an amazing league.

Park's goal was beautiful.

4-1 FT. Good performance overall. No injuries either :)

Rafael, Fabio, Evans and Lindegaard all played 90 minutes (we only have 17 outfield players on tour at the moment, so 3 had to play 90 regardless).

Watched in the crappy stream which was buffereing every min. (My Internet sucks though). From what I have seen Young was good and looked dangerous. Always wanted the ball, beat the full back and whip in crosses.. And also I'm very happy for Macheda. He has the talent to be a really good player. Hopefully he has learnt from his loan spell that If he doesn't work hard he will fade away.

Was very happy with his tweets too, saying he wants to stay in Manchester only.. And about time before Ferige pulls him off Twitter. :)

Macheda..
“I had a really difficult six months on loan with Sampdoria,” Macheda revealed.

“At the start I did well. I scored one goal then the manager didn’t choose me for 11 starts and I had a difficult time and I didn't play a lot.

“But it was an experience and I learned a lot from it and it made me a better player.

When I came back from the first day I realised that United is the best club in the world. When you see the other teams you really see the difference.

“So I am really happy to be back and I hope to score more goals in the coming games.”

Young had good game ? We didn't watch the same game. Few crosses, nothing more. If he couldn't dribble against NER, then I really don't know :@. Good thing is, Ecuador is out, and Valenica is coming "home".

First season for new team, first game in the pre season.. Maybe your expectations are massive. He had a good game tbh. This is just glimpse of what he can do. Once he settles with the team we can see his performances being even better..
