The Manchester United Thread

I couldn't sum all my thoughts up on Twitter with the character limit so I wrote an article on it.

It's basically a small rant, but it's what I think of the current situation and what should be done about it from fans and staff point of view.

Please give it a read and let me know if you agree/disagree.

Agree with most of it. I'd sooner see Nani given a run than Zaha though.

In terms of writing style, paragraph man. The 3rd one nearly blinded me.

aha, I did. That's his blogging style. It's not my website. I asked a friend to post it up on his site for more exposure.

Funnily enough, Fergie did say "give the guy time". It has been barely four months, and Utd's global brand is massive. Give the guy some funds, let him develop his style of football, and once he stops being afraid of losing games I'm sure he will be able to instil the same grit into the players he brings in - except they will be the ones who come to Utd and thank Moyes for them bringing them to be top pros.

I get the feeling Ferdinand, Kagawa and especially RVP were massively turned off by Fergie leaving - in fact reportedly Kagawa and RVP moved primarily because of SAF, so him retiring a year later must have been a massive surprise considering they undoubtedly seeked assurances when they joined he wasn't planning this. It wouldn't surprise me if that soured the relationship. As for Ferdinand, he's a veteran now, his knees have gone, and I can see him leaving to either go into coaching, or to do his magazine/music thing on the side.

Disagree about the 3 players, RVP has been fuming that people are claiming that. Rio has been on his last legs for ages, and Moyes has actually been giving Kagawa that extended run people have been demanding.

He needs/needed a good window. But he must finish top 4, more for his future targets than anything else. And apparently we are going back for Herrera....

Rumour have it that we're going for Gundogan. Dortmund is having some problems with his contract and had stated that he might be leaving. He would be perfect for us, but what do you all think about the chances of us getting him?

Some valid points made, but what everybody seems to miss is that with "big" teams constantly improving there is no room for "write off" seasons if that means finishing out of the CL positions. There is a huge risk that if this happens we ll be usurped by other upcoming teams end end up being Liverpool (ie perennial outsiders). With all the money constantly being pumped into teams chasing CL qualification things can quickly spiral out of control if we find ourselves out of the CL positions come the end of May.

Also, frankly I' m not at all convinced that with time Moyes will improve/improve us. He strikes me as somebody who is afraid to take bold decisions (ie afraid to lose), rarely changes stuff tactically (always he makes substitutions like for like players and when he tries something different such as taking off Rafael, pushing back Valencia at rb and introducing Nani its not tactically that different and is quite stupid in a match against a team threatening you on the counter) and, most worryingly of all he cant inspire players for toffee.

On his inability to inspire I give you two examples/arguments:

1. No UTD team in the last 23 years would fail to react on finding itself behind on the 85th minute at home the way we did against Everton when we pretty much failed to even muster a proper attack in the remaining 9 minutes. That was the most disheartening thing of all.
2. Yes the squad has issues and weaknesses but lets not forget that its the same squad (plus Januzaj and Fellaini) who won the EPL last year and is nowhere near as bad and as boring it has mostly been playing this year.

So I fear that time is not something we have a lot of....

On other points raised:

1. Herrera said today he wont be moving in January - which Im not sure is such a bad thing as he's not that great.
2. Gundogan is better but Id be surprised if he comes to us ...

I think Real will get him.

Also lot of rumours going around that you will trigger Koke's release clause. 16m quite cheap in current market.

Are we talking about playing identity here (i.e. tactical style) or club image?

Its not like those are separate things. Barca is poster child for attacking football , but they've played many tactical brands over the years.

If it's playing identity, this isn't true - success is a bigger factor in persuading players to join a club; and if we're talking about club image, then success plays a large part in determining a club's image.

Again, you're splitting hairs here. Succesful club has all these things working in synergy. You can win champions league of the universe, but if your team is 11xSuarez, the sponsors aren't even going to fart in your direction.

Similarly, Real Madrid can consistently attract biggest names on the planet, right? But when you look at the trophy cabinet, last time they really were dominating force in club football, was 1950s. This is not accomplished just with money (although they spend shitload), but with posh brand they've managed to build.

Would he really want to go there after what happened with Sahin?

dont think most think that far in front thay just see wow real want me its only after thay get there and there not playing thay start to think this might have been a bad move

Exactly. It's too soon to worry, Moyes hasn't really been given much of a chance so far.

Tactical identity and club identity are different, though. For example, Newcastle have a club identity of being a local, worker's club; but on the pitch, they have become very much Europeanised, with a brand of attacking football which is not very traditionally English. And on the topic of Real, you don't have to consistently dominate to be considered 'successful'. United haven't really dominated Europe in recent years, have they? Nor have Chelsea, but they're definitely successful clubs. Real are consistently in the top two in Spain, and have won various trophies in the last 60 years - more than most clubs have ever won.

It's human nature to think that you can do something someone else can't. I reckon G?ndoğan wouldn't worry too much about that, because he'll be so confident in his own ability (due to all the praise he's got in recent months after a great run of performances), and anyway, Sahin's not that bad off now, although he's obviously not in as good a situation as pre-Madrid.

Rumours RVP has handed in a transfer request. Calling bullshit on that one.

Great first half. Our ability to hold on the ball is amazing, pretty much on pair with ability to create chances.

What Newcastle players have to do to get yellow card? How many fouls they need to make?

Are you watching the same match as me? So far United (Either of them) have hardly created anything note worthy, and either team could easily be 1 or 2 up. Very even match so far, and if it continues like this I could easily see it being a draw or Newcastle win tbh...
