The Manchester United Thread

De Gea dives in at the deep end for Manchester United in Seattle

Plunging a 20-year-old 'keeper into the job of establishing himself as United's number one to replace a European Cup winning veteran is no new thing.

David de Gea is set to meet his new United colleagues for the first time in Seattle this weekend with a ringing endorsement from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Reds boss believes he called it wrong almost a decade ago when he scouted Chelsea's Petr Cech as a teenager in France.

“I went to see Cech when he was at Rennes," said Ferguson. "He was 19 years of age at the time and I said to myself, 'Yeah, he's too young', but Chelsea bought him not long afterwards for £7 million or something and he's never been out of the team.”

So it is a case of once bitten twice shy for Fergie when de Gea precocious talent was identified as the best around to replace the retired Edwin Van der Sar

“Youth, age, it doesn't matter when you have the ability of a goalkeeper like Cech or, we know, de Gea has. He's young, he's quick and he has fantastic presence and composure. His use of the ball is outstanding.

“All of these plus points are things that don't go away. He's got these natural things."

Manchester United have been announced as the most valuable sports team in the world at £1.16billion by Forbes magazine, beating NFL team Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees to the top of the list.

Sir Alex Ferguson says it is time to forget about Manchester United signing Inter Milan ace Wesley Sneijder.

Even though Ferguson denied having any current interest in the Holland midfielder on Thursday, there has still been plenty of speculation about a deal, including a claim that shirt manufacturers Nike may get involved to push it through.

However, when asked about Sneijder in Seattle on Sunday, Ferguson's response was blunt.

"Forget it," he said. "We are looking at some things but I am not so sure Sneijder will be easy to get."

United have been linked with various other targets this summer, but quality control at a side that has won four Premier League titles out of the past five and reached three UEFA Champions League finals in four attempts means most are dismissed as a waste of time.

"I could pick three or four players to come in but they wouldn't be good enough for us so there is no point," added Ferguson.

The future of United striker Dimitar Berbatov remains uncertain after Ferguson failed to find a place for him on the bench to face Barcelona in the Champions League final in May.

However, the United manager has not detected any lingering issues from a situation he feels is more commonplace now due to the massive squads big clubs have to operate with.

"Dimitar is fine," said Ferguson. "There is no problem. He has trained very hard.

"He was disappointed to be left out of the final but I was disappointed myself having to tell him.

"But that is the problem in football today. You get to the big games and you are not just disappointing one player, you are disappointing six or seven."

United ultimately lost out on European glory to Barcelona last season, and their clinical defeat in the final has been the subject of much analysis this summer, but Ferguson is preparing to send them on a Champions League revenge mission.

Challenge

And the manager is refusing to write his side off as inferior, adding: "Barcelona are the team of the moment.

"But it is not the kind of thing that makes you think 'let's not bother with European football any more, we are never going to beat Barcelona'.

"Manchester United are bigger than that. We have a better philosophy than that.

"The challenge will be can we improve enough to get to the final next season - and win?"

I'm sorry but i hope this is a smokescreen. I'm happy going into the season with the current squad in terms of the premier league, but SAF said he wanted us to challenge barca now with sanchez and probably with fabregas by the end of the summer.

De Gea, Jones & Young are good but they will not bring us closer to Barca, we need to sign at least one central midfielder. I'm still holding out hope for Sneijder, but i'd be happy with someone like Lass Diarra too. We either need a top class creative spark (with fletcher in the defensive mould along with Sneijder) or a defensive destroyer like Diarra (with Anderson in the creative role).

In all honesty, after these comments my hopes of us signing anymore players have diminished.

wouldn't mind seeing the back of berbatov, rooney + hernandez with welbeck, macheda (and regrettably owen) as backup is sufficient for me so maybe we could look to sell berba to get money to spend elsewhere, if the gnome would give us the money!

Was already known to the non-ignorant, but it's nice to have stats to back it up as well. :)

Regardless of stats, I can see many crying about how bent FA are and how refs favor United..

Brilliant news about Clevers and Welbeck staying and getting there chance at the club but it still doesn't solve our obvious problems.

Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped Tom Cleverley to follow Danny Welbeck into the England squad and confirmed neither player will be leaving Manchester United on loan this season.

The duo both benefited from time away from Old Trafford last term.

Cleverley earned rave reviews from Wigan manager Roberto Martinez as he helped guide the Latics to safety on the final day of last season, whilst Welbeck's six goals in 26 Premier League appearances for Sunderland were enough to secure a first full cap in a March draw with Ghana.

Both have now linked up with the Red Devils on their pre-season tour of the United States, having been given extra time off following England's disappointing European Under-21 campaign.

And, though neither youngster is likely to get as much first-team action next season as they did last, Ferguson feels it would be counter-productive to let them leave.

"They won't go on loan again," the United boss confirmed to Press Association Sport.

"Going on loan only serves one purpose; keeping them happy by playing all the time.

"At their ages, it wouldn't do us any good because other clubs would be benefiting from what we could be benefiting from.

"Because of the experience they have had, keeping them now benefits us."

There have been suggestions Welbeck might be interesting Bolton.

It is easy to see why, given Ferguson must wrestle with a striking department even he accepts is overloaded given it also includes Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf.

It is hard to see Diouf having much of an Old Trafford future but Ferguson has spoken warmly of all the rest, and Welbeck is no different.

"Welbeck is an England international now," said the Scot.

"He is an exceptional talent. And Cleverley will play for England too.

"He is an intelligent modern-day footballer. His movement and understanding of space is really good for a young player.

"We are happy both of them will stay with us."

It appears, therefore, that Ferguson will have to deal with disgruntled players every week, although as he approaches 25 years in the Old Trafford hot-seat, it is not something that fazes him.

"To operate next season with 26 or 27 players is not a handicap to me," he stressed. "It is an advantage.

"Yes, players will be disappointed they are not playing some weeks. But at the end of the day, it will help.

"By the time we get to the end of May next season, we will have done well."

Ferguson always has a plan. And by the end of each season, there are few players who really have a cause to grumble about how many minutes they have been involved for.

It is a point he stressed to £17million new boy Phil Jones, who, during negotiations about his move from Blackburn, questioned exactly how much he would be involved.

"The area we had to work hardest with Phil was to convince him he would get enough football," said Ferguson.

"The first thing you can say is last season Nani played the most games for us, with 48. He was still 11 short of the maximum.

"No-one at United is going to play the maximum number of games. Rio Ferdinand only played 29 and Nemanja Vidic missed some as well."

Ferguson also had a couple of direct examples with which to prove his point.

Twelve months ago, Chris Smalling arrived from Fulham expecting to be eased very gradually into the Old Trafford scene. He eventually made 33 appearances.

In the two seasons prior to that, Jonny Evans racked up 60.

"The other thing I explained to him was that we are always trying to look ahead towards the team of the future rather than the team of the present," said Ferguson.

"We expect the team of the present to fulfil their responsibilities but the team of the future is the one that is growing whilst the other one is doing the business."

Ferdinand on Evans..

"You can't discount Jonny," said Ferdinand in a webchat with Manchester United Official Web Site.
"It's a bit out of order that people have been saying it's definitely going to be Chris and Phil.
"Jonny's also one of the most talented central defenders in Great Britain.
"I'm sure all three of them will be battling it out in the future to play in the centre of defence."

This match tonight is at 3am in the UK, ill post a stream on here if I manage to stay up :P

Its at 7:30 AM in India. Sigh. Will be very late to office then.. :(

I'll post stream for sure. Can't wait for the game. In last 2 years, didn't miss a game ( when United play ofc)

Might go sleep early then wake up again for the match.. Don't think I'll make it to 3 and then watch the whole game considering it will probably be a bore.
