The Manchester United Thread

Then why the interest in Varane if Jones was the long-term target?

All then news about Varane popped about from month back. Jones was linked with us from last season, but no one expected us to sign him this season. Had no idea about Varane, tbh even now I'm not sure whether our interest was genuine or played ManUtd are interested card to add few millions to his price. He was reportedly worth 3-4 Million month back now he is worth 10 Million..

Madrid have only very recently got involved. Zidane scouted him, and went to meet him and persuade him to pick RM. Arsenal made a late bid last night but it was too late.

Varane went to Madrid 2 weeks back to check training facilities. Maybe it became public only 3 weeks back.. Who knows..

You said that before you signed Jones, you wanted to sign Varane (despite admitting to never actually seeing him play), now you say you're happy with Jones and prefer him to Varane anyway. I'm not talking about buying Varane on top of Jones, I'm talking about why they went for Jones and not Varane - the cheaper option who has only slightly less experience than Jones,

Maybe Fergie rates Jones higher than Varane? It is not just about spending 6 Million more, it is about whom Fergie rates higher and want more at United..

He rejected Arsenal because he wanted to win things in the short term, and didn't think Arsenal were going to do that and because it meant staying in Lancashire and not making a big move to another city at a young age. How can you possibly say he would reject Madrid or Barca if they came calling? And Varane wouldn't? He picked RM largely because all the interest had cooled in him from Utd, and partly Arsenal (until last night)

You answered that Joss. Lancashire lad who is happy to stay at Manchester. No Probability of foreign players wanting to play for Madrid/Barca is more than English players. And how many times have we seen England players playing for Spanish/Italian big clubs? Very rare. English players tend to stay in England and with Jones if he fulfills his potential, he will stay here for years..

See we are not sure about Madrid's interest. Media picked it up late. Maybe Madrid already made a contact and player has set his heart to move to Madrid and rejected us?

But by the time Jones/Varane (if you had signed him) break into the first team, they will have been at the club for 2/3 years and be perfectly suited to Manchester, to Utd, and to the EPL (via sub apps etc.)

Pique was at United for 3 years and hardly settled. When he went to Barca he was slotted into side as if he was playing in the league for years. And our success is built on English/Britain core..

Wrong. According to Matt Spiro (L'Equipe Journalist), JM wants to have a look at him during pre-season. In the likely event he turns out not to be as good (yet) as the options he already has, a loan to PSG is on the cards. Not sure where you're getting Varane = Carvalho's back-up from. No one has said that...

Garay's future is uncertain and most likely will be sold. And Varane will take up Garay's position. Carvalho is 33 or 34 and wont be playing all the games. Its like for like replacement. And I dont think Jose will sign somone thinking about future as he wont stay for years. He want players who are ready for his squad.

I know it's a united thread and for the record I'm a united fan. I was just asking everyone's opinion about the issue.

Fair enough. Personally I don't have a problem with the Udinese & Granada situation. I'd like to see the B teams promoted too tbh.

I doubt it, with Giggsy aging, i feel he is very unlikely to play left wing at all this season, this leads to me think our Wing options will be Young, Park, Nani and Valencia. giving us options, with Young also playing entrally at time, like Park will in bigger games.

i hope we dont lose nani or park both were excellent last season. i think berbatov could be on his way out though maybe he will be used ss a sweetener to strike a deal for sneijder

I think Berba will go, With Owen retained for another season, welbeck looking sharp, Macheda coming back.

It doesn't matter....he knows that there is something wrong in the United dressing room when all the cheaters are there. He doesn't want to take any risks.

Carlos Tevez scared them away???....you have a ugly ginger coach paul Scholes and the worlds ugliest player wayne Rooney in your team....that should be enough.

Ohh...you think Rooneys hairtransplant is going to change things???? Nah....he has got a face only a mother could love tbh.

get off paul scholes u can only dream of having a person like paul scholes, one club man, great midfielder, respected, loyal and LEGEND. Oh wait u don't know what those words mean!

He knows what they mean, they are the things his club are finally seeing they cant buy.

Wondered same! may be because Italians are tactically sound!

So they can score more amazing last minute goals versus Villa. :)

Lol. No seriously we have Macheda in the first team, Petrucci in the reserves and then last season we signed 2 youngsters Alberto Massacci and Michele Fornasier. Now we have signed 3 or 4 youngsters.. Not complaining just wondering why we are signing so many from Italy..

Because a footballing nation of Italy's stature looks so depleted talent wise nowadays that surely, the next generation coming up with be filled with talents.

Maybe not.

Yeah....

ManCity have much sexier footballers than United. Thats important in football nowdays:

That is possibly the most retarded thing I have seen someone post on this forum.

We are almost close to signing Young. I'm very happy with his addition to the squad. He might not improve our first 11 but surely he will improve our squad..

Something positive about our signing.. Copied from RC.

Nani (1st - 18 assists), Rooney & Young (Joint 4th - 11 assists) were in the top 8 for assists last season....

Ashley Young is 7th on the PL assist rate list with 0.46 assists/game, behind Giggs, Bergkamp, Cantona, Fabregas, Henry & Beckham

15,622 – Since the 2006/07 season, Sylvain Distin is the only outfield player to have played more PL minutes than Ashley Young.

44 – Since the start of the 2006/07 season, only Cesc Fabregas (60) has made more PL assists than Ashley Young (44).

Rise, sir Fabregas.

Sorry, impressive none-the-less.

Brown, O'Shea and Gibson held "productive" talks with Sunderland, agreed "broad" personal terms, not had medicals yet.

Would be gutted to see all three of them leave. Especially Brown and O'Shea. Gibson has potential, but I guess he'd be better off at Sunderland than at us.

‘They’ve got perhaps the hottest striker in the world on their team right now,’ said Donovan.

‘He really is a special player.

‘He’s not a guy that’s going to wow you with any moves or tricks but every time that he gets a chance he makes the most of it.

‘He is a player who is capable of changing the game in an instant.’

Slightly disappointed that Gibson is moving because he's one of my favourite players but I don't think he would have made it here so joining Sunderland is probably for the best in terms of his development. Brown leaving is no surprise as he hasn't been the same since his own goal against Liverpool but letting O'Shea go is a real surprise for me seeing as he's so versatile and a great squad player.
