The Manchester United Thread

Largely terrible article, as it completely misses the big difference between United and City's spending, and hugely twists his words. Good work Express, not

Stil some good points. And Beckham better keep his mouth shut. He doesn't seem to know that he will face De Jong in his next match.

No, very flawed points, and dont start flaming ex-united players on a united thread. Whats De Jong got to with the fact its a rubbish article?

This is what Beckham actually said:
[h=1]David Beckham: Manchester City will never match United's dominance[/h]• Doubts about Eastlands spirit, says former United man
• 'History – and Sir Alex Ferguson – have set United apart'

David Beckham has dismissed Manchester City's ambitions of becoming the dominant force in English football, questioning the team spirit at Eastlands and saying: "They are never going to be Manchester United."
The former United and England player accepts that City are a growing force but believes history counts for more than cash when it comes to fashioning team spirit. "The money that has been pumped in has been incredible," he said. "Players have been bought and that does a lot for the club and for the team. But United have that history and it's not all about paying fortunes for players.

"It's important the players get along with each other – that makes team spirit. As much as they have got the money to bring players in, sometimes that doesn't work. If they continue they will be a threat but there are no guarantees. I don't know. I haven't been around their team and their squad and I wouldn't want to be around Man City. But if they continue to bring players in, then who knows? You saw it with Chelsea when Roman [Abramovich] arrived. They won two leagues and they won them on the trot. It works sometimes but hopefully it won't work at City."
Roberto Mancini, the City manager, responded to Beckham by pointing out his side won last season's FA Cup, the first piece of silverware, he hopes, of many. "Well, we started to win last year, and we want to continue to win in future," he said. "Of course, it's going to be difficult for us to arrive at the point where United are. They have won everything in the last 20 years. But we want to try – and in the future we can improve and talk about this."

Asked about Carlos Tevez, Beckham said he was convinced the City board will spend regardless of what happens with the striker. "Tevez was a really strong player for them last season, so if they lose him it will be disappointing. But they've got a lot behind them, so they can afford to bring world-class players in."

When Beckham was wearing a United shirt (1993-2003), games with City were straightforward. "Every time I played against them it was during a spell when we were winning everything. They were the games the fans looked forward to and wanted us to win, so every time we came up against them we were winning. It was good to be a United player at that time."

Beckham's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson soured towards the end, most notably when the manager threw or kicked a boot into Beckham's face after an FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. He has long since forgiven the Scot, however, and for Beckham "there is no better manager".
"He continues to win year after year. He continues to change the team around. When people think the team's perfect he brings players in and United just carry on. It's not all about spending loads of money. It's about having the right people at the club and in the team, and United always have that.

"I can't see Sir Alex stopping. He is a legend and I have so much respect. He was a father figure to me. He works hard at what he does. He is the best at what he does. He is No1. He is the best manager in football."

At 36, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder still feels "good and fresh" but has laid to rest the notion he could return to the Premier League and play against United. "I wouldn't like to. I have played for the biggest club in England and I wouldn't like to play against them. I still feel good and fresh but I can't see it happening. The Tottenham thing didn't happen and it didn't happen for a reason. At the end of the day I only want to be known as a Manchester United player and that's the way it will stay."

Beckham's insistence that there will only ever be one team in Manchester should give City some incentive in their tour match against Galaxy on Sunday. Cheekily referring to the match as "just a small game", Beckham said he was looking forward more to the All Stars game against United. "But City coming here will be great for the fans. They will see some great players. There is no extra motivation because it's Man City. It's not special to me because I am a Man Utd fan. They have some great players but they are never gonna be Man Utd."

No, it pointed out that City dont want to be United. United is everything City doesn't want to be. Minus the success of course.

And United have splashed alot of cash on players aswell, like Veron, Rio, Rooney...exactly the same kind of fees City have splashed in the last 3 years. Difference is, City have done it in a shor space of time.

And Beckham said some true things but some **** aswell. "only 1 club in manchester"...he got that one right in a way. And it's not the one that plays in trafford! But i think he meant that it was the club just outside manchester.

If you cant tell the difference between United and Citys spending, theres not much point to this

He never said City wanted to be United, but that they are not going to be the dominant force of football, read the article

He said that "City will never be Manchester United". Dunno if that was in that article. He seems to think City want to be them.

Which is not true. Did he say City wont be the dominant force in football? I think he said that they will never be as succesfull and have Uniteds history. But actually, they can...who knows if this world last 50+ years. City could overtake them in terms of trophies won.

No he doesnt. Read the article, its about being the dominant team in england which is currently United, and not specifically wanted to be United

its the exact same thing. Christ. He's talking about United being the dominant team in england, your point and the article from the express misses this completely

Read my edit: He says: "they will never be manUnited". "manunited got the history and trophies from the past 20 years" etc etc....

[h=1]Ashley Young delighted with start to life at Manchester United[/h]

Former Villa winger pleased with 'fantastic' move
• United hammer Seattle Sounders 7-0 in friendly

Ashley Young says he is happy with life at Manchester United since his move from Aston Villa. The winger has not scored in either of his friendly appearances so far but has already seems to have settled in well at his new club.
"I am just delighted to be here and get myself on the pitch," said Young, who played a part in United's 7-0 win over Seattle Sounders on Wednesday. "No disrespect for the Villa boys but as soon as I heard of Manchester United's interest, I just wanted to get the deal done and start training.

"I can play left, right, off the front striker or as a main striker, so I just have to concentrate on my own game and wherever I am picked, do myself justice. The manager bought me for a reason, to get assists and goals and work hard for the team. If I can do that every time I am selected, my job is done."

It is the first time Young has been exposed to the sheer size of the club he has now joined. And while the reception United have received does not compare to an Asian tour, the sight of fans maintaining a constant presence outside the team hotel is novel.
"This is fantastic for me," he said. "You come to the United States and see the number of fans outside the hotel every day. It is crazy and just shows how big the club is. For me to be part of that is fantastic."
Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick against the Sounders, while there were also goals for Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Park Ji-sung and Gabriel Obertan.

Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledged it was a "strange" contest given United's two goalkeepers, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, were both called on to make a series of excellent stops, proving they are not going to let David de Gea cement the job of Edwin van der Sar's replacement without some significant competition.

"Obviously we have signed David de Gea as the main choice I would imagine," said Ferguson. "But Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos have probably said to themselves they have an opportunity with Van der Sar retiring.

"It is an open door for me. De Gea will play on Saturday against Chicago but they will all get their fair share of games and the decision on who starts the season will depend on how De Gea settles."

There had been some suggestion that Diouf would not be involved due to interest from Blackpool. However, the Senegal youngster, who was recommended to United by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, insists his only focus has been on the United.
"I never heard anything about that," said Diouf. "I am here. People are just saying things. I have to know before anyone else. It is not a big deal."

With seven strikers at his disposal, Ferguson has some big decisions to make, although Diouf has enough confidence to believe he can be one of the chosen few.

He said: "I am confident I can play at Manchester United. Why not? You always have to think positively. You always have to do your best. I spent last season at Blackburn, which was a good experience for me. It helped me play some games in the Premier League. Now I am ready.
"The competition is really hard and I know I will have to take my chances. We will see what is going to happen but I want to stay. I have to show the manager why that should happen."

Typical United, even grinding out result in preseason. Can't fault U21 players as they played their first game and it was very humid. And also Fabio was not able to run at around 35 mins mark.

Very impressed with Welbeck, he was so confident and played some lovely passes. He even dropped very deep to carry the ball forward.

Cleverley did ok as CM, still can improve. His mobility and passing was good and there for all to see.

Obertan had few good moments, he comes up with magical moments.

And finally Smalling must be most natural footballer in our squad. Put him anywhere he can play. His finishing was world class, he has very bright future..

Ferguson - No more spending | Manchester United News, Fixtures, Results, Transfers | Sky Sports

Fergie rules out signing a replacment for Scholes. And he is happy with his current squad.

Is he talking the truth? No more spending for United? :D

Better believe it.. I wouldn't trust the man when it comes to signings.

First: He ruled our Sneijder
Second: He said signing him is very difficult.
Third: No more signings

Then after next game:
We are working to find a solution for Scholes replacement.

Superb one.. Rio "We have sent Twins to bed". Lol.

As always TRoM with brilliant article

Following United’s 3-1 win over Chicago Fire, Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken about the FA singling our club out when it comes to
In recent years they have banned Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney for three league games following sending offs in a pre-season, banned Rooney for swearing and even charged Ferguson for praising a referee.

“I think sometimes there is an unfair focus on United on disciplinary issues,” said Ferguson. “It will always be there and I think we know that. I don’t really know whether it’s about me or the club, that’s a difficult one, but I think that [resentment] has got something to do with it. They’ve certainly always found a way to treat us differently. It has been happening for a while now and they always seem to find a way to do us when, with others, it’s seemingly forgotten. Personally, I felt hard done by last season. I defend my club, but that’s my job, yet part of the problem is that when I make comments, the media are onto the FA right away and there is no doubt about that. Then they feel forced to do something and they are afraid of what might happen if they don’t.”

FA Target United – 8 Reasons Why Whelan Is Wrong
“Something is wrong when a top international like Rooney is seen doing something like this, as clear as day, and is allowed to get away without being punished. If it was any other club or player, you can bet your life he would have been sent off. But officials seem intimidated by the words ‘Rooney’ and ‘United’. Manchester United are allowed to get away with things the rest of us get pulled up for. And you can’t have one set of rules for one club and another for the rest.”

Every team gets decisions that go against them. Until there is video refereeing, and possibly even after that, we can’t rely on the right decision being made 100% of the time.
However, it is the decisions that are made by the FA after the game which can help prove bias. Manchester United have long argued that the FA make an example out of our players whilst some misguided people, like Dave Whelan above, think the FA let us get away with murder.
Wayne Rooney has been let off without punishment following him elbowing McCarthy in the head at the weekend against Wigan. People use this as proof that the FA treat United differently than other clubs.
Below you will find several examples of not just where the FA have treated United unfairly, but when in like for like examples, they have treated United more harshly. Being able to compare the more severe punishments handed out to our players for committing exactly the same cry as players from other teams who get off with lesser punishments makes a mockery of the claim United are favoured.

1. Pre-season friendlies
August 2nd 2010: Patrick Vieira is shown a straight red card in a pre-season friendly with Manchester City.
“If a player gets a red card in a friendly he gets a ban for his next friendly, not for competitive matches,” said a spokesperson for the FA.
Punishment: N/A
August 4th 2006: Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes sent off for Manchester United in pre-season Amsterdam Tournament.
“At a Disciplinary Commission hearing, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes had claims for wrongful dismissal rejected and will therefore both serve three-match suspensions,” read an FA statement.
Punishment: 3 match ban in the league.
August 3rd 2003: Steven Gerrard and Neil Mellor sent off for Liverpool in pre-season Amsterdam Tournament.
Punishment: N/A

2. Celebrations
January 22nd 2006: Gary Neville celebrates last minute winner in front of opposition Liverpool fans by grabbing his badge and punching his fists in the air.
Punishment: £5,000 fine.

January 14th 2006: Robbie Fowler celebrates a goal for Manchester City in front of the opposition United fans by doing a ‘five finger salute’ in reference to the five European Cups Liverpool have won.
Punishment: N/A

3. Drugs tests
2003: Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand missed a drugs test. (Rio tried to arrange a return to Carrington whilst the drug testers were still there but they said no, despite staying for a further half an hour. Read about this unjust treatment in more detail)
Punishment: Eight month ban and £50,000 fine
2002: Manchester City’s Christian Negouai missed a drugs test.
Punishment: £2,000 fine

4. Verbal abuse of the ref
January 16th 2011: Rafael da Silva shouts at referee Mike Dean and gets in his face after being wrongly shown a second yellow card.
Punishment: £8,000 fine.

March 10th 2010: Steven Gerrard tells Andre Marriner to “**** off” and sticks his fingers up at him after a freekick is awarded against him for a two footed tackle from behind.
Punishment: N/A

5. Forearm swings
January 26th 2010: Rio Ferdinand swings his arm at Craig Fagan in an off ball incident against Hull.
Punishment: 4 match ban (3 matches + 1 for appealing)
September 23rd 2010: Javier Mascherano swings his arm at Jermaine Beckford in an off ball incident against Leeds.
Punishment: N/A

6. Elbows
March 26th 2011: Wayne Rooney elbows James McCarthy in the head in an off the ball clash.
Punishment: N/A
September 25th 2010: Steven Gerrard elbow Danny Welbeck in the head.
Punishment: N/A
March 15th 2010: Steven Gerrard elbows Michael Brown in the head in an off the ball clash.
Punishment: N/A

7. The Derby
September 20th 2009: Craig Bellamy walks over to a restrained fan on the pitch and slaps him across the face.
Punishment: Warning of future conduct.
September 20th 2009: Shay Given runs to the Streford End, jumping up and down, pumping his fists in the air in celebration of a late Craig Bellamy goal.
Punishment: N/A
September 20th 2009: Gary Neville runs in the direction of the opposition City fans in celebration of an even later Michael Owen goal.
Punishment: Warning about future conduct.

8. Miscellaneous
The treatment of Patrice Evra by the FA. There is no comparisons for this as no other players that we known of have been the target for racial abuse by a club’s groundstaff after a game.

First...he ruled out signing Nasri. And judging later now...he spoke the truth.

Dunno about this Sneijder thing...i think he is talking the truth now aswell but wouldn't be suprised if there was be a signing later.

The whole Sneijder thing is very complex because of the Nike angle, which can make the club millions. It is teh most complicated transfer United have had to deal with

Personally I believe Ferguson is speaking the truth. I said earlier in the thread what I think his plans are for the squad when it comes to that central midfield position.

He'll use Anderson as the driving force and Rooney will drop so deep he can make those "Scholes" passes. When Anderson doesn't play, Giggs/Park will play to do the same thing and Fletcher will be in the mix with Carrick too. We have a very versatile squad now too with Young/Welbeck and Cleverley all coming back so I don't see us making another signing.

Have to agree with this. Sometimes we go ott by saying "Fergie is lying" everytime he talks about transfers.

If we dont sign any CM then Carrick-Anderson will be our first choice and can see Cleverley getting many games as CM..
