MANCHESTER UNITED fans are not worried about getting Wesley because they have got Cleverley.
United have fought a complicated battle all summer to land Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan in a £35million deal.
But the faithful raised a banner in support of their homegrown 22-year-old star who has come from nowhere to make a stunning impact on United this season.
"Who needs Wesley? We've got Cleverley" it read. But did the young man himself catch sight of it?
Cleverley said: "I did! Wesley Sneijder is fantastic but if the fans think that I must be doing something right."
He certainly is. From the centre of midfield on Sunday he was the cog that made the rest of the team tick as United destroyed Arsenal 8-2.
'Ruthless', 'exciting', 'a joy to watch' are just a few of the terms Cleverley uses to describe this new young team of Alex Ferguson's which swatted the Gunners aside.
Cleverley said: "It is a real pleasure to play in a display like that with world-class players.
"I see in training that we have it in our locker but when it all comes together it is pretty exciting.
"We are a young, high energy team and hopefully we will keep putting on performances like that and the trophies will come. We were ruthless in front of goal."
As they were in the Community Shield, coming back from two down to beat Manchester City 3-2, at West Brom to win 2-1 and at home to Spurs in a 3-0 win. He added: "We look good going forward. Our versatility means almost anybody can occupy the forward positions and we can swap about.
"We know each other's games inside out. It must be a joy to watch."
And a joy to be involved in for the Basingstoke-born lad who has been at United since he was 12. Loan spells at Leicester, Watford and Wigan have turned him into a man. Cleverley said: "I have always looked on thinking one day I want to be on the pitch.
"It is happening, but I have got to work hard and stay there. Growing up around Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky **** and David Beckham you know the history of the club.
"I looked at Scholes and Beckham, top professionals you can model your game on."
Cleverley even chose No '23' because Becks still wears it.
He said: "The manager offered me 22 or 23. I prefer wearing odd numbers.
"David Beckham was my idol growing up, and he wore No 23 at Real Madrid and still does with LA Galaxy."
Cleverley is now walking in his idol's footsteps.
