The Manchester United Thread

Okay, I give up.

I have tried repeatedly to see what everyone else does in Gary Cahill, but for the life of me cannot figure it out.

I see more potential in Gary Cahill and a bright future with him alongside either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling than Jonny Evans their.

Is that supposed to be a compliment? Not exactly a hard thing if you ask me :P

Not a compliment, just stating that whilst Vida is out and Rio can't play more than 5 games in a row it would seem... I'd rather see Gary Cahill in my back four than Jonny Evans.

Well, I'd rather see 7m in our transfer kitty than Gary Cahill in my back four.

Then again, I'm an Everton fan, I would kill for 7m.

I honestly don't get the Gary Cahill hype.. Anyone fill me in? Why's he suddenly meant to be so good?

Playing for England, but also with just 6 months left on his contract and is the heart in defence for the team rock bottom of the Premier League. Anyone help me out? He's not that quick, decent in the air and mistimes his tackles quite often IMO. Much rather have Evans and Jones at CB and spend the £7M on a central midfielder than a CB we don't actually need considering the amount of CB's we already have.

He's English and he's half decent (and had a great season last year). Beyond entering the last 6 months of his contract, as you say, there isn't that much remarkable.

To be fair the best defence for any team is better midfielders to keep recycling the ball. Look at how much actual defending Pique and Puyol do for Barca, I'd definitely say Utd need a quality attacking midfielder now to give some more incision. Hernandez just needs service, he's clinical enough to do the rest.

Cahill is a decent player but if people start criticizing Evans for odd mistake then Cahill wont be any different. Like Evans he does odd mistake, but I would rather have Evans in my team. Now there is a trend of over hyping player who looks half decent in weaker teams. I'm not saying he is bad or something but he is not worth it. I would rather add that 7 Million for top quality CM.

Vidic maybe back for next season, still it is not confirmed that he will miss 1 year. His agent said he maybe back after 6 months, so if we buy Cahill it will be as short term option, but I dont know what we should do once Vidic is back.

SAF said we wont be buying anyone bu I'm sure that he and our staff are working on identifying realistic target to cover CM position. We hardly make any noise before concluding the deal.

Better the devil you know. Jones and Smalling are both ahead of him in the pecking order. Paying £7m for an equally error prone, overrated CB to cover for 3 other centre backs? No thanks.

It would appear that Federico Macheda is off on loan to Queens Park Rangers. To be honest, he hasn't really don't enough since the two goals he scored against Villa and Sunderland (I know he scored against Chelsea as well) and if he doesn't make an impact at Rangers, I can't see him staying at Utd for much longer.

If SAF transfer Jones to midfield, we will need CB cuz Vidic is 30, Rio 33, and I have low confidence in Evans.
But if Jones stays in CB position, then we need to buy midfielder. We don't need attacking midfielder, Cleverley and Rooney (and Ando) can hold that role, we need destroyer, like you said, someone to recycle the ball. Banega, Martinez would fit well.

Tbh Jones is not a better CB. He is a better player but not a better CB. His positioning is all over the place. He pushes up so high, he leaves lot of space behind. He may go on to become top CB but as of now i would say he is better RB>CM>CB in that order.

What a Fantastic Display of Defending by Sunderland! This is the best I have ever seen! Have done us a huge favour!

Why do you say no to Cahill? In my opinion he is a lot better than Jonny Evans and with Nemanja out for the rest of season and Rio unreliable with injuries, that leaves us with Jones (who is better in midfield again in my opinion) and Evans so the arrival of Gary would give us another option and lets not forget, he is an international and has looked very good whilst playing for England albeit he hasn't been great at Bolton this season and also at £7mil that would be a steal.

Being "better than Jonny Evans" is hardly high praise.

Why you think Jones is better in midfield is odd, but each to their own opinion. Yes, Cahill's an international and has looked good whilst playing for England, but so did the wholly average Joleon Lescott against Spain.

Cahill's been shocking this season, as has his team. Why anyone would want someone who's slow, an average tackler, and shaky under pressure I have no idea, particularly when they've had such a bad season.

Woo.

You're making the mistake of assuming we're all advocating signing NOBODY instead of Cahill. Instead, I'm (can't speak for anyone else} advocating searching around a bit more and having a look at the transfer market for a better deal.

So City are blaming all Utd fans for all previous trouble are they? Must have a lot of tar in the brush for such an ample generalisation

you're criticising measures brought in to protect people?
stupidity

Have a feeling that locking them in though is going to create some form of ill feeling and cause more problems than solving them. Never been in favour of locking fans in. Rival fans can simply wait outside a stadium for them instead.
