The rules are clear, its a straight red. I remember back when this wasn't an auto-red and it was equally annoying because some refs were far too liberal with it. So for the sake of consistency its better. But in a case like yesterday with ref making the wrong call, I think we can all agree that pen and a red is extremely harsh.

Straight red because he is the last man, and there was no one covering back, that defender was not getting there. By the rules that is a last man red.

Oh yeah, I completely agree, I was just stating that the ref clearly got the call wrong about it being a pen, as it should have been a free kick, but either way it was still a red. I just didn't read the comment properly at all, but the last man taking a player down no matter where on the pitch be it in the pen area or just after the half way line it is a red and should be all the time.
Either way I don't blame the ref for making the wrong decision as it was a tough one to call even if he had the best view of the challenge. Until refs are given real support they are going to get the big decisions wrong some times and it's hardly their fault if they do. I say give them the same power and tools rugby refs get. They can ask a video ref if they aren't 100% on the big calls and that minimizes the risk and chance of a bad and possibly game changing call.

Tough game, should take all points. But we will have to work hard for it. They are certainly capable of beating us if we are not switched on. Kiessling is a great finisher, and a real handful.

We have not played with real confidence yet. Hopefully Tuesday will be the start of that. As you say Bayer are quite dangerous.

I think the reaction to Young's booking is a bit bizarre to be honest. I agree that he clearly throws himself into the guys leg in a fairly blatant attempt to win a penalty and I wish more players were booked for that sort of simulation. Yet, he's far from the only player in the league or in our squad that does this. Most players have leaving their foot trailing to force contact down to a fine art.

I've seen a lot of people call Young a disgrace to the club as if he's the only player in our squad who dives. You can name pretty much any of our attacking players and it would take a couple of seconds to find an example of them diving on the internet. Just shows what a bad reputation can do for you.

What I don't get is Graham Poll coming out and saying Young should be banned for 5 matches. That seems excessively harsh and stupid. Other people dive just as much as young and they don't get nearly enough stick that young is getting. Also wouldn't doing something about his diving after the game be against FA rules? I know they changed it but they could only do it the officials didn't see it or its something 'truly exceptional'.
If they are going to be that harsh they might as well give a straight red for diving. That would stop it.

The reaction to Young is justified because he has done it for his hole career here, at United and Watford. I think it also helps that he is getting bashed a lot by United fans because he has given us yet another reason to hate him. It's fair to say most of our squad has indeed dived at some point, but I don't beleive that any of them other than Young has done it often and more importantly they don't fly through the air and roll around like they have been shot holding the wrong leg like Young has, and whenever he is tackled he never gets straight back up he is always holding something claiming it hurts.

Frankly he is an embarrassment not only to United, but England as well considering he is one of the top English wingers(which proves the sorry state of affairs the England squad is in if Young is one of our best) and should be setting the example, not encouraging diving and rolling around like a pansy. You see Rugby players jog back onto the pitch after they have half their ear literally dangling from having it torn of the side of their head to name but one example(granted Rugby= a different mentality but if they can do that a football player can get up after being kicked in the shin pads straight away) but Young, and other players like him who simulate and attempt to deceive the ref by diving or over acting to a foul deserve to punished to the fullest extent of the rules so we stop this fad in its tracks. Whether they be United players or not. But I'm glad to say we don't have that as a problem at United, other than Young.

Or fine them 4 weeks wages. Not getting paid for a month will certainly heal the vertically challenged folk

It'd have to be a post-game verdict through a panel though. There was a fair amount of players that got booked for diving last season when they had clearly been taken out! Mind you, the FA would still get it wrong.

As much as I agree diving hurts this sport more then anything else, you can't just change rules mid-season just because one player made over the top dive.

Managers need to start dropping the players and clubs fining them for diving.Players need to understand that you are not only spoiling your own name but also of the club and the fans.

I said others do it, and others will continue to do so but not with the regularity or with the same theatricality of Young. He has done it his whole career. It is rife but if players aren't singled out for it then it is going to get a **** of a lot worse, **** even Moyes has apparently come out and said it is unlikely Young will stop diving because it is part of his game. Don't get me wrong, even though Young is being singled out right now and I support that, I agree that blaming just one player won't help in the long run.
