The Manchester United Thread

And thus maybe we can conclude Moyes has thought of this and is confident of replacements. Or, since having a midfielder who can only play 45 mins a game isn't incredibly useful, loaning him out to find fitness/form for half a year is more productive than having Evra forever taunting him with burgers. Fletcher, Cleverley, Giggs, Jones, Carrick and even Rooney if we were desperate can fill in.

Fair enough you do have a point, let's see who Moyes brings in then

Now you just created a paradox. First you point to statements made by opposing players to justify Scholes' greatness and then you turn around and call the very same players 'clueless' ... Agreed that the Ballon D' Or votes is not the perfect way of ranking players but still, for a player people call one of the best midfielders ever, it's pretty interesting that he hardly ever got a vote

When Scholes was playing it was a media vote and the players didn't even have a say. Now that they do, I'm fairly sure I'd care more about what someone of Xavi's calibre had to say about my ability than who the Andorran captain thinks is the best player in the world, or the teammate alliances that inevitably happen. It's not as if Xavi, Zidane or whoever you want to quote was forced into niceties. "Of course, he's a top player." Or for Redknapp, "A top, top player. T'riffic." They purposely describe his specific ability. La Maisia graduates are taught to use him as a role model. You only need look at the fanfare from the most lauded team in history just to get his shirt to see the appreciation that they have.

Can't you two get somewhere private for your intellectual ******* contest? :)

I think you got answer from Joel. It was even mentioned in the Guardian article that Journalists didn't vote for him even though players who were average received because of Nationality bias.

Scholes's lack of individual recognition hints at a lesser influence on the grandest stage, and it is not a huge surprise that he cannot boast of such awards. It is a shock, however, to discover that he has not received a single vote in the Ballon d'Or in his entire career. On five occasions he made the 50-man shortlist – 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 – yet not a single journalist decided to vote for him. Granted, he may not deserve to have been in the top five in any particular year, but when you learn that players of the calibre of Jan Koller, Pape Bouba Diop and Freddie Kanout? have received votes, you do start to wonder

If Balon D'or votes is all you want to see the quality of player then there is no point in even continuing this.

Edit: **** this. Why am I even arguing about Scholes' greatness. It's very well known and I know whether to take players like Xavi's, Zidane's opinion or a Chelsea fan's opinion.

I didn't even start the topic again

When did I ever say Balon d' Or votes are the sole factor whereby a players ability is measured. I didn't even want to start this topic again because I kind of knew you would end up reacting this way. So please for the love of god, end it. I am more than happy to agree to disagree. Thank you

Golden Ball was complete bollocks back in a day. If you look back far enough some of the winners are just...I'm sorry Michael Owen, you didn't have **** on Raul.

It really has much more credibility know with professionals voting instead of just the media.

It would have been better to wait till the summer and secure CL qualification first before starting to sell deadwood. You will be hard-pressed to find quality replacements for Anderson now since CL qualification next season isn't exactly assured and Moyes isn't that big a name either. Plus it's January where everything is either not for sale or horribly over-priced
Really? Anderson? The one that has pretty much been non-existent all season. His departure is no loss at all, and we save his wages and hopefully they will activate the buy clause in summer.

Would be nice to have a worthy replacement lined up though, doesn't matter how you look at it... Fellaini has been ****, Fletcher can't be relied on too much cos he's just come back, Carrick... is Carrick, Cleverley... woeful, Jones can do something there but would it solve any current problem we have as to regards creativity through the middle? Rooney... it's last resort to use him there considering how good he's been this season, why would you want him to move more central.

So... all in all... beautiful options. Not the midfield you want when 7th half-way and needing Champions League football finish. Why are people trying to justify if we don't finish top 4 it will be disaster, nothing short of. We struggle to sign players with Champions League football, let alone without. It would certainly have some bearing for future players.

Yeah but they would have zero relevance to Anderson is my point. Anderson leaving changes nothing, because he has done precisely **** all. Anderson isn't part of the midfield equation.

Anderson leaving is like the tea lady leaving!

I kind of get where zzeezy is coming from because you have just sold a player in a position where you lack quality and depth before adding someone ... So until United add someone, which I am sure they will, such nervousness would probably be normal among fans considering how badly the summer went

Anderson has done nothing all season. Selling has zero impact on us. let's be clear, there is no nervousness about selling Anderson. You are seriously overplaying this angle. It was a matter of when, not if, Anderson goes. I can't state this any more clearly, Anderson is an irrelevance in the midfield, he will not be missed, except by those who like fat jokes.

But it's a position where you already lack depth, even more so now. It's a bit like Chelsea and Betrand. Loaning Betrand has zero impact on us as well considering he has barely been on the pitch. It was also a matter of when, not if, Betrand goes

Yet I am nervous. Why? Because it basically leaves us with Cole who has been in poor form, Azpilicueta and Ivanonic as our recognized full-backs in both positions. So I will be nervous until Mourinho either says that Kalas is staying (Kalas' agent said he was close to a loan move) or he is bringing in another full-back to shore up the depth because a couple of injuries and we will have to let Essien play as a LB

So what if we lack depth there? Anderson himself makes and made zero difference. That is the whole point. Anderson might as well have not been at the club. If we needed another body, we'd just call a youth player. **** I'd prefer it if we did play a youth player liker Lingard if we needed another body. YOU might be nervous about Bertrand, the general feeling on Anderson is surprise that we actually found someone to take him. We need to do business regardless of him. Considering we didn't have Fletcher for the first 4 months, we've actually ended up better off in the trade. A needed player returns, an unneeded on leaves. Same amount of playing mids, better quality overall.

I really believe Fellaini will become very good player for us. He had back injury too along with Wrist injury so that was holding him back, at least back injury will.

He is not slow as many ManUtd says, it's just that his acceleration is bit low. Hopefully with his back injury sorted he can play to his full potential.

I think it was a panic buy of the highest order, he's not a typical United player and nothing has shown me he is in his first playing spell for the club. However this wrist injury he was apparently playing through and maybe some other back problems could of perhaps been a reason.

Better to judge him when he comes back this time, but I'm really not convinced by him and to pay what we did was ludicrous in itself considering no one even bought out his release clause.

It's utterly sickening if we don't buy someone this window for midfield, I honestly think Moyes has been really stupid again this window, seen scouting impossible targets unless we pay humungous fee and salary, even if it's for the summer. Like looking at Juventus the other day, realistically it was Pogba or Vidal. Both I can't see happening in a million years. Oh and why the **** do you need to scout top players in person? Is that totally necessary?

Why can't we take an option like Cabaye, Rakitic, Pjanic or even Lallana. They may not be in the truely golden world-class bracket but one of them alone would have a huge impact on our midfield. Out of all of them I'd like Pjanic or Cabaye. It's always same old same old, go after the very unlikely targets, end up getting nowhere and then realise you still have the same problem if not more.

Obviously the ideal one is Gundogan, but I can't see us wrapping that up this window without other clubs having a say.

I like how you start your post criticising Moyes for signing someone you think is a mediocre midfielder, and then end it criticising Moyes for not trying to sign a mediocre midfielder.

How is signing someone we targeted all summer long a panic buy?
