The Manchester United Thread

Do you really think this Mata thing will happen? Even though Sky Sports News and a whole **** load of other reports are reporting the story. I still have serious doubts it will happen and Jose will sell Mata to us, surely he isn't that stupid and is bitter over Rooney?

It's Manchester United, everything about the last 5 years of business tells you never to be sure until they are playing in red. I doubt Jose is bitter at all. If anything he would be trying to smooth things over so he can go again at Rooney. Also its 40m, that Chelsea will need for FFP, and IIRC i think its better for them if that arrives in jan over the summer?

I think he would, Mata wants to play for the WC squad, Jose wants the money, and also it'd help him if Man Utd can take some points off the chasing pack. His Chelsea side is defensively strong, so perhaps it's also realising Utd have a long way to go to rebuild to be a threat to Chelsea in terms of squad strength.

Quite the helping hand though... if it does happen.

Mata is far more comfortable outwide than Ozil is.... Mata also covers for the fact the club is increasingly unsure about Rooney staying. Amazed no one has brought this point up.

Convincing Rooney to stay is not exactly rocket science, just give him more money...and possibly burgers.

No burgers, only just got him back into shape! Also he is on 250k a week! He doesnt need anymore!

Pretty much all of the broadsheets are running with the Mata story now..

Just waiting for Woody's cheeky opening bid of ?5m and Bebe on loan for a season.

This is what Woodward/Moyes was keeping Zaha for! Lol.

So I went to sleep, woke up and found these Mata transfer stories had gained some steam instead of just dying out. Oh Christ...

Selling Mata to Manchester United makes no sense at all for Chelsea. No sense whatsoever. They can command a comparative fee in the summer from a foreign side such as PSG if they decide to sell him. Plus we are competing on all 3 fronts and selling Mata would leave our depth in the AM positions short (yes unbelievably so). Plus we will never sell him to United on pure cash terms after the failure to sign Rooney

So guys if this deal happens, it's because Rooney is going the other way. Otherwise not even worth discussing it

Marquee signing. Show of strength. Whether we NEED him or not doesn't matter, but does he improve our current team? Yes. With our current finances we can easily afford ?37m for Mata and still buy what we actually need, plus change. We never needed RVP, but he pushed us to the title. We don't need Mata either, but he's a genuinely world class player, coming into his prime, who has everything to play for with the WC coming up. RVP pushed us to the title, Mata could well push us to the top 4. Tactically? It's not beyond the realm of possibility that we just change to a 4-3-3.

Perhaps but it still makes a good deal more sense to spend the limited time you have in the January transfer window to pursue a player who actually mitigates a weakness in your squad rather than go after a world-class player from a rival club whom you have little to no chance of getting anyways unless you are willing to part with a certain English striker who has been the only bright spot in your season thus far

Come on people.... If Mata is available we should just fooking sign him. You can't simply pass up the chance to sign a world class player.

Chelsea and Manchester United agree provisional ?40m deal for Juan Mata

Chelsea and Manchester United have provisionally agreed a ?40m fee for Juan Mata, though the champions are yet to make a formal bid and any deal to take the 25-year-old to Old Trafford remains dependent on him personally informing Jos? Mourinho of his desire to move.

Negotiations between officials from the two clubs are at an advanced stage, with the transfer said to be "almost complete" by sources close to the discussions.

Despite the lack of an official offer from United for Mata, who has found first-team opportunities relatively limited at Stamford Bridge this season under Mourinho, the London club anticipate that situation changing soon as there is a little over a week of the current window remaining.

As long as Rooney isn't going the other way, and United can afford the deal, without compromising on their ability to spend in the Summer, and as long as Moyes/Woodward actually do some **** in Summer, this is reasonably good deal.

If RvP stays, and becomes fit, things might get a bit messy;;
RvP
Januzaj/Kagawa - Rooney - Mata

However, if Rooney were to play up-top, then the situation would be pretty good;;
Rooney
Kagawa - Mata - Januzaj

Still wondering if we should have waited till summer, and got some actual wingers like Draxler/Griezmann, but considering our situation at present, Mata deal can only help boost.
