The Manchester United Thread

Would we as united fans take Vertonghen and srna in jan or next season if the option came up?

Obviously i think or hope most here will agree strootman will be a class buy if we get him.

Srna is a bit old now, but would be good example for Rafael. I would take Matteo Darmian instead, good solid Rb and pretty young aswell.

Our first goal vs arsenal - ahahahahahaha

United's first goal was so soaked in Arsenal tragedy that you were surprised the camera didn't focus on Gunnersaurus crying into his t-shirt cannon in the stands. Wojciech Szczesny made a hash of a cross after colliding with Gibbs, with the ball rebounding out to Valencia. His shot was wayward, but struck Gibbs and flew into the net. 1) Allowing the opponent to counter
2) Making a mistake on a cross.
3) One player injuring another
4) An own goal.
All in the space of five seconds. It really is a stunning commitment to slapstick.
As if to add the final layer of varnish of Arsenal to a shiny surface of pure Arsenal, United had taken the lead before they had even had a shot on target. Half of Arsenal supporters laughed, the rest cried.

No and no. Srna is to old and from what I have seen of him this season he is defo not the player he was. And Vertonghen I like, solid defender good header and composed on the ball and chips in with gls. But dealing with Levy and Spurs we will have to pay 30-40m and that's way to much!

Just watched highlights of game yesterday. Rooney was immense his work rate and general play was outstanding. Think he has defo gone up a level this year. Also on Sunday Supplement this morning there tipping Pep to replace LVG in 2 and half seasons when his contract expires. Apparently Pep has said in his book Utd is the only team he wants to manage in England.

I'd take any right back tbf, rafael won't stay fit but valencia is decent tbh and agree levy would rob us or drag the deal out and then sell at the last mintue to some other club.

A bit late to the party, but I found Blackett to be very solid.

I am curious how well he develops, without having a commanding figure to look up too. Let's be real now, none of your current defenders can be considered role models for young players.

There are chances that player themselves might be leaders and grow in stature with games without having anyone to look up to.

Happened with Hummels for sure.

Also we should have retained at least one senior defender.

If blackett can stop the hoofing then he'd be very good, stop attempting a rio who also failed at them and just play it simple when can.

Gundogan wants to the prem, ohh lawd please, a fit gundogan is as good as we'd ever get in that position.

Blackett can be a good defender for us a regular starter im not sure but good squad player defo. No thanks to Gundogan if rumours are true about his back being constantly managed, even forcing him to miss games every now and then. Shame really is a great CM still, but we don't need to be signing players like that.

I would love to see Louis van Gaal develop our young home-grown players and not buy so many expensive foreign players and older players, but I think he has realised now so many British players lagging behind continental players abroad in technique and tactical nowise, to play three at back and playing out of defensive playing possession football, Just like our home international teams. Just look at how the Dutch, Spanish & German youth systems work, how comfortable the young players when they're the on ball, playing different positions, off the ball movement and adapting to different tactical instructions during a match. They learn this so early on in their development as youngers. That's why so many top English teams buy top foreign players as ready made players and not develop their own players. Again I would love to see Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Tyler Blacklett and Paddy McNair develop into excellent defenders by being coached by our great Dutch master. But the trouble is he's not going to given the time that he's needs, if you look at is career, Ajax fantastic youth setup, Barcelona fantastic youth setup and Bayern Munich fantastic youth setup all with very good young technical footballers who have been brought up playing the continental technical style of football. Our great leader before, Sir Alex Ferguson did use old fashion British attacking wing play style for his tactics most of the time when he was in control of our club and not forgetting his great motivating skills to demand best of the players. So for United have to move forward into modern world of footballing tactics. So LVG got a lot of work ahead of him, if he gets the time?.

Good thing about LVG he will always give youth a chance if there good enough and we have some good young players at our club. Also since he has been here our number of youth scouting has increased and number of youth trialist has aswell. Think LVG will defo see out his 3 yrs rebuild the club bringing it into a more modern way from all levels through out the club. Training/Scouting/Development ETC. Ready for when his replacement steps in.

Tactically the Dutch are far beyond us because they don't even assign player positions until a late age, each player must be capable of playing in any position. This is why many graduates of the Ajax academy are so versatile - Nigel De Jong started as a full back/centre back before moving into midfield, Vertongen frequently played in midfield and can play full back etc

But...they are not necessarily technically superior, our academy is among the best in the world and has produced many greats, not far behind that of Ajax, Barca or Bayern really. Giggs and Scholes were impeccible technicians.

Tactically we are far behind, and it all stems from a lack of grass roots education.
