The Manchester United Thread

Overt, bigoted racial slurs are acceptable so long as it's meant as humour?

What year is this again?

When it's clearly being said in an ironic way for humour? Then yes, I would say that's perfectly acceptable.

I hate this debate as this is the wrong platform, but come on mate. You can't openly call someone coloured a savage with all the connotations that word has implied over the years, whether in jest or not, and expect it to be deemed acceptable. You just can't. We've moved on from those times thankfully.

Whatever we think on the harmless nature or not of the use; you can't go openly putting it out there and not expect serious rebuke.

It's wrong however you cut it.

Hope you've never called someone a girl or told them to man up in that case, even ironically.

You know full well as you're a pretty darn intelligent guy reading you that there's a WORLD of difference between the two.

Freedom of speech. Offence is taken, not given.

Can't stand the modern trend for social justice warriors and their sanctimonious moral outrage at every little thing.

Well I'd suggest you didn't exercise that right and repeat that around most black people.

Their outrage at the slur and all the connotations of the word toward them over the years many have fought against might well not be so pleasant as this.

Something you just don't put out there. Referring to blacks as 'savages', in jest or not, is one of them.

I agree. I'm not saying that people should say it or that I agree with it. I'm just saying people have the legal right to say whatever they like, offensive or not.

How do we know that they are referring to the colour of skin though? how do we know it is not the fact he is from Venezuela and may indeed be of indigenous descent? that is how I interpreted it tbh.

This debate reminds me about a standup by Robin Willams, I think it was titled Weapons of Self Destruction. It had a segment that went like this.

Robin makes a Scottish joke, audience laughs.
Robin makes a Fench joke, audience laughs.
Robin makes an Arab joke, and the audience goes - whoa, you can't do that, that's offensive.

It was surreal.

Thanks for clarifying. Sorry, I'd misunderstood where you were coming from.

Getting well off the topic of a footie forum, but yeah, we have freedom of speech in principle. But it's not backed up in law where it get's murky. I call someone the N word here for example, I'm risking being locked up for a race hate slur. In America, I'm protected by the first amendment and in most States the courts.

I just don't get why you'd use 'savage' to start with regardless. Shrugs.

Why not? Both groups that have suffered horrific abuse and systematic oppression throughout their history. But it's fine to use a word in a context that references the stereotypical portrayal of one group in exactly the manner used to belittle them for so long in one case, but not in another? Not even done with obvious irony or sarcasm?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's in bad taste and not funny (the whole thing is pathetic) but I don't think that someone should be reported for saying it either.

The word savage is pretty much used as slang these days for someone who is boss, badass, doesn't give a **** or in MMA or Boxing a complete beast.

This is going to be a fantastic weekend of sport.
House to myself Saturday and Sunday ;)
Beers, Footie, Beers, munchies, Beers and Footie, Beers, Chili, Beer, Beer, Sleep.

Regarding the stupid petition thing.
I wasn't offended by it, I really didn't give a rats **** to be honest, but it was an imbecilic petition, I seen an opening and took it (6)

The petition maker won't care, I don't care, Valencia doesn't care... So why would you guys care?
Kiss and make up (except the scousers... My mammy says they have cooties).

Just watches all of ronaldo' Man Utd goals on mutv. You forget how many great goals that man scored, unbelievable free kicks and running with the ball then smashing it past the gk. I remember his debut against Bolton and him causing their defenders havoc. Amazing player.

**** again that second half. We was holding on for 20 minutes like a conference team holding on to a draw at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. Really not good enough. We really shouldnt be pannicking at home like that when we are winning.

TBF, we collapsed as soon as schweinsteger left

In my opinion, the best player in the world, by a smidgen.
