But hey, it was just me who thought the first half was laboured, slow and easy to defend. (Being as that was as far as my opinion went last night after the ridiculous defensive reactions.).

Go and watch first half again and see how many chances we created. Crowd booing was for Martial sub and chants of attack attack was understandable as we didn't score. But saying we created next to nothing is just wrong.

You know you're struggling when you use fan TV to make a point.

Scholes picked up on it last night, Carrick and Bastian excellent in wanting to pass forwards through the middle, but they could also have done with more carrying through the middle. Whether last nights improvement was a short term reaction to criticism from the lives of Scholes, or a long term change remains to be seen. United don't like teams who sit very deep, that's where Herrera should be used as he will be in acres of space. CSKA conceded a lot of free kicks to our direct runners, especially lingard. Caught offside too much as well. Another question is can United play with the same tempo with a 3 man mid? Big difference in the number of players getting into the box, but I'd like to see one or two arriving late, keeps depth and allows you to recycle if the initial attack breaks down. Fellaini on was pointless. Still more improvements to be made. Can still create better chances, should be creating 3-4 chances like the Carrick lingard move a game

We got slammed the other thread for the multitude of missed chances against Kazan. But it's acceptable when it's flipped?

It was obvious we created plenty of chances in the first half and could have been out of sight. Some people can't see the different between not creating and creating but not scoring.

Need more of those Carrick and Rooney chances. We had 2 clear cut ones where you need at least double that a game, with the aim of taking two.

On the plus side, most of the rest of the chances were half chances, rather than being speculative, but you still need to take 1 in 4/5 and we didn't, like Rojo shot at the near post, Martial's header, Smalling not taking the flick, Mata not getting power. got to be scoring at least one of those. so improvements to be made there too.

3rd min - Rojo Cross, Rooney shot just wide.
9th min - Rooney pass to Lingard, just missed by inches. GK made double block. Rojo took the second shot
9th min - Blind pass to Lingard, tried to curl to the far post.
15th min - Blind pass to Mata, Mata shot was saved. He stretched completely to make contact, he did but couldn't score.
29th min - Rooney free kick, Smalling ducked (was offside I think) but the ball was just wide off the far post. Not a very good chance though.
32nd min - Young and Mata combined at right wing, Young played excellent cross. Lingard attacked the ball far post. Cut back and shot but was wide. Missed Bastian not by much for empty net tap in.
36th min - Young's fantastic cross to the far post. Rojo was unmarked, should have scored but hit the side netting.

Very few clear chances there your listing either. If that was a good tempo, I hate to think how bad you'd been the last few games. It was pretty easy defending for the Russian's all night.

But hey, you won the game and that's all that counts in the groups so well done.

On a more positive note, I though Lindgaard was your MoM. Lack of composure first half (one the edge of the box where had time to pull it down and shoot and didn't particularly stood out); but overall he was positive all game and that was an excellent touch volley for the goal.

FYI.

It's been a predictable, very non-descript one. All the possession. Next to nothing created with it. No pace, laboured build up. Easy for CSKA to defend.

70K plus were frustrated with 3 games and it was showed in this game when we didn't scored but your case is completely different.

Lingard at the far post was very poor effort. Didn't know why Bastian didn't slide to connect with the ball. Like I said, these are more than enough chance to score and ended the game.

I said it in the window that Smalling is Otamendi, but just 6 months behind, and he continues to demonstrate that.

Yeah, great thing about that chance is the movement from not only Rooney but also Fellaini. For some reason our players never make the movement unless ball is directed at them. That goal was like Bayern goal. When the ball is played like to Lingard, they make all sort of runs to attack the cross.

Hopefully this is the start.
