The Manchester United Thread

This is from Charles Sale who's usually reliable so here it goes.
The root-and-branch revamp of Manchester United's scouting system will see up to 40 appointments around the globe in an initiative started by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The wholesale changes from the tight-knit Sir Alex Ferguson era will see the academy and first-team talent identification operations merged to create a more efficient approach in order to attract the best prospects in world football.

Sports headhunters Nolan Partners are working with United in recruiting fresh scouts in every territory.

Dutchman Henny de Regt has already been brought in to work with head of youth recruitment Derek Langley, while chief scout Jim Lawlor has been given admin support so he can concentrate fully on finding players.

United want to keep a greatly expanded scouting system in place whoever replaces current manager Louis van Gaal, so avoiding David Moyes' predicament of finding there was no accessible database of potential players when he took over from Ferguson.

Every man and his dog saying Jose will take over next month. As with everything with this club. I'll believe it when I see it.

How do you reckon he will do if/when he takes over?

Honestly? Dangerously well if Berta joins him. he has a clear idea of what he wants to play. The players will immediately respond to him, the fans are massively ready for change, he's going to have a mega kitty, Mendes is ready to send players his way, he doesn't have to worry too much about youth because there are so many established ones and he's good at that part of the youth.

Even with Guardiola in charge of a similar if not better set up at City?

Looks like Renato Sanches could happen soon for @ManUtd. No deal yet but club interested and have been talks. Deal close.

Most probably the only manager Pep will hate coming up against and get under his skin.

Oh yes definitely although one would argue that Mourinho came out worse from the fight. Head to head results as well as the damage it had on his reputation. He has never been the same since his Madrid reign.

Then again, he did win the league so who knows? If Jose comes, it should be an amazing season

Oh for sure Peps head to head in there time in Spain is better. But Pep defo hated coming up against Jose, you could see in his interviews. And don't think City will have it there way like Barca did. Gonna be great with all these world class managers next season.

Is Peps head-to-head with Jose as good as Klopp's 6-1 against him?

Curious minds and all that. :P.

The club itself did more damage to Jose than Pep ever did

Fair point as well. Combination of factors that contributed to the debacle at Madrid. Still doubt Jose has recovered since. Always going around like he has a point to prove.

United machinery if it remains fully behind Jose should provide an astounding challenge to Pep

And Klopp and Conte shouldn't be discounted either.

We need these 4 firing at their best, because our European showing in the last 7-8 has dwindled. And the quality of out league has dropped as well

How did City do last night? Never saw any of it. Just seen the result.

Good enough that I would call it a missed opportunity. Strange game, controlled it, but didnt test Navas enough, and Joe Hart ended up saving them late on

Ta. Be a real interesting watch next week. City are still in a great position with not conceding the away goal. Score out there and suddenly Real are panicking needing two.

Literally a game of 2 halves. City in control the first half and very comfortable but never actually did much with the ball. But Real was parking the bus and keeping things very tight so was to be expected.

Second half Real came out and started to control the game. Put more pressure on than City did in the first half but apart from 2 chances I can remember (a looping header off the bar and Pepe blasting the ball straight at Hart from 4 yards), City defended very well also and kept Bale quiet.

Kompany and Pepe both had excellent games. Looking at how the game went, I think it was Real's game plan to keep it very tight first half then try to nick an away goal in the second half. Almost worked for them but im sure they will still feel comfortable next week. Cant see them losing at home with Ronaldo back. City need to go and score, so will be vulnerable on the counter. Also Silva went off after about 30 mins with a suspected pulled hamstring.
