The Manchester United Thread

The comparisons with LVG time is rubbish.

What statistical models showed by md4 is that United saw a noticeable increase in shot volume and shot quality which represented a top 4 team. Defence hasn't chanced since Van Gaal. In other words, United are a much better outfit going foward.

Modern day football mate. Absolutely ridiculous. It's either one extreme or the other with very little middle ground.

I get what you mean, and yes people are too quick to jump in and judge sometimes but come on, that team of players should be destroying teams of Feyenoord's level. A team full of world class players again one of the also-ran's of Dutch football.

We cant win every game, and nobody expects us to, but to play a game where you dont even get one meaningful shot on target is a disgrace, regardless of opposition. If we played them off the pitch and had 20+ shots on goal and lose to an offside goal you can put it down to bad luck and just one of those games, that every team gets a few times a season. But we didnt even turn up. The level of the players that were involved in that game, to put in a performance like that is simply not good enough, no matter how many excuses get thrown in.

Again its not the result that bothers me. I know we cant win every game. Its the performance. You would think a lot of those players would be itching to get on and give Jose something to think about. Well they have certainly done that. Better get some padding on that bench because a few of them will/should be sat there for quite a while.

As for this game yes it was a bit. But this season no. Read damola3 post about chances created.

Depay also needs to rein in his long-shots. If he passes the ball a few yards from his regular shooting locations, the chances of scoring multiply.

Here's comparing Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar's shot maps to Andros Townsend. They all have shot volumes of elite goalscorers but... the other three's shot quality is much better. Ronaldo, Neymar and particularly Messi rein in the long shots much more. As you can see, the chance of scoring hugely increases as shots are more central and close to goal. If Depay passes or dribbles a few more yards to goal, he will be much more productive.

This.

I'm not expecting to win every game, I'm not expecting the league title.
Hiring Jose and splashing the cash is no silver bullet. But I do expect these millionaires to put a shift in, work some space and get a few meaningful shots away.

That was one of the laziest performances I've seen in years.

How was Pogba?

No worse than an other United player. They were all poor.

But take nottin' away from Feyenoord. (Who were far from great themselves.). Top the Dutch League with 5 wins out of 5. To think Utd just had to turn up to win was never going to be the case regardless. This is a tricky group. No question one they should come through, but it's no cakewalk. The only positive out the night was the other game ended in a draw so no real damage done save for pride and a few lost coefficient points.

Thats the thing right there. A lot of people would expect us just to turn up and win. But an away game to a team in form isnt going to be easy and we can accept and understand that. But to not even turn up and make a game is something else entirely. I dont think Feyenoord did anything special defensively to stop us playing. So we cant use parking the bus as an excuse. We was just absolute ***** when we had the ball and had no ideas whatsoever. Feyenoord could have camped out in their box for 90 minutes and I still dont think we would have had a decent shot on goal we was that poor going forward.

In all honestly, a team of our level, with the players on the pitch at the level they are at, against that level of opposition, should still be dominating a game and creating a few decent chances. Forget the changes, forget who was playing their first game/start. Its not like thats the first time they have kicked a ball since May. They are still training every day, keeping match fit. I dont buy the "its his first game" excuse. They are professional footballers. They do this week in week out for a living. If you go on holiday for 2 weeks you dont suddenly forget how to type on a keyboard at work, or stack shelves at Tesco, and need a few shifts to get back into the swing of things. Probably poor examples but you get the point im making. Theres not an excuse in the world that can justify that performance.

My predicted lineup for tomorrow, think we'll go back to the squad that won us the first games, De Gea, Romero and Johnstone also in the squad, Bailly seems to not be in the squad for some reason!

I think we will go

Ddg
Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw
Carrick, Pogba
Rashford, Rooney, Martial
Zlatan

think Mourinho will want to start getting the best and strongest CB pairing together. Also think Carrick will start to bring some control to the CM area and help Pogba out and settle him down for s few games. On other news CBJ was fantastic today against Newcastle with a MOTM performance, easily best player on the pitch and smashed it on all the stats sites averaging 8.3. And Periera on loan at Granada has also been doing very well in a really **** team. Looks to have matured and putting in some very disciplined displays defensively and also looking good going forward. Playing on the left mostly gutting in.

Yeah I'd love for Carrick and Rashford to start as well, but I still think he'll go with Fellaini and Mata as he did the first games.

I hope Rojo is out in January and CBJ takes his place haha, also saw Pereiras game with Granada, looking very mature indeed!
