The Manchester United Thread

Just caught MOTD2, Trevor Sinclair says Rooney needs to play as United's "number 4/holding midfielder" - Oh dear. Yes he has a terrific passing range, but come on, although he defends better than most *strikers*, he's never been known for his tackling, and if he's got yellows & reds up top throughout his career, I'd hate to see what he'd be like as their sole holding midfielder in the middle of the park. Wayne Rooney is an attacker, simple.

Well he is one of the best passer out there, but he's proven time and time again that he doesn't have the footballing brain for this sort of role. It's not just about being able to hit a Holywood pass. It's about knowing when not to. Rooney just launches one long ball after another whether it makes sense or not. S

ame thing when Gerrard was being deployed as DLP. Some people thought he's doing okay, then England played Italy with Pirlo, and everybody could see the staggering difference between real DLP and makeshit DLP.

Pirlo is another level haha

United have run less distance than any other team in the league thus far this season.

By contrast, L'pool, City and Tottenham have put in more work than any other side.

Different styles of play, and make of that what you will. But that's a big disparity between L'pool, City and Utd.

And he dosent seem to halt his run, the curve comes in because he tries to play offside.

If it is offside or not, that is another question.
Is it me or in EL and CL camera angels(and replays) about offside are a lot worse than in PL?

I don't understand what you're trying to argue about? lmao

I said he played to the whistle, and I said he curved to play him offside, you practically repeated me

Different styles of play, but one thing is clear:

We are absolutely not working hard enough. Nowhere near enough pressing in defence, no enough sprint intensity.

Herrera need to be playing all the time. Rooney and Felliani (the latter hasn't actually been bad) cannot play, they are not intense enough to cover midfield, and not clever enough to hold it like Carrick or Schweinsteiger

That's the most surprising thing to me as the one thing you always could rely on from Jose's sides is complete effort and commitment for the full 90 minutes to get the result.

Last year at Chelsea when he lost the team and the start at Utd not so much. Turning around a style of play and the time needed to build a side in your image is one thing. But to see a Mourinho side dead last in work rate is a flashing red light that things wholly aren't right.

Yes you told that he trusted official to call it. Trying to get offside by taking yourself out of the game is not good decision. Cant relay on that, he should have closed down on him and probs no goal would have scored.

The offside "trap" has its risks yes, but it's not as if he was half the pitch away from the linesman, should've been called. Anyway, done & dusted now.

I will admit, I'm incredibly worried. All this started after he called out a bunch of players after we lost to city.

Right now, we look exactly like the Chelsea side of last season.

can see where u coming from mate but personally i think its still too early to panic.give it til jan

I know so much has happened since, so many players bought, players sold, a couple of new managers since, etc. but does anyone think our problems since life without Sir Alex stemmed from David Moyes wiping out the entire coaching staff along with Mike Phelan? Rene Meulensteen is the one that always pops straight to mind when I think of important coaches that were let go. People made a big deal about the goalkeeping coach at the time, but in hindsight, De Gea has only got better so I wouldn't look too much into that.

I suppose he had every right to let go & employ his own staff at the time, being the manager, but I still can't help but feel there was too much drastic change behind the scenes/on the training ground, etc.

Probably not an overly relevant debate at the moment, considering this is us trying to rebuild from Van Gaal's little era rather than Fergie, but I always come back to these thoughts.

Joe McLoughlin once told me at a training academy that defenders have to halt running for a brief period and scream for the offside in order to get it. Defenders seem to get the benefit of the doubt.

Its a lot more to do than that! And TBH we wasn't great against Hull either. It's nothing like Chelsea at all. No need for knee jerk reactions this early.

Why has no one ever played Fellaini at CB?He has the aerial presence and physicality for it and pairing him with Bailly could solve the speed problem he has.Is a Fellaini not wanting to do it thing?

I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or what? He'd be a walking penalty/red card

It's a totally different position to learn where you will spend time chasing your own goal. A different type of awareness.
