The Manchester United Thread

Pirlo was always a class act I agree, but I really do think he was more influential with age. It's like if you lose your eyesight, your sense of hearing enhances, and in this case, I think his ability to control & dictate games got better as his legs gradually went.

The way I remember it he always top class, it's just that he disappeared off the map in the late 2000s along with serie A decline. Then Juve resurfaced as a major power couple of years later, and everyone went "oh hey, this guy is good!".

1. What a goal and performance by Carrick. Been crying out for him to control a game from midfield and he couldn't have done any more to impress today.

Well yes but:

1. It WAS only Northampton.
2. Against better teams his lack of mobility/pace will be exposed unless he is protected in a 3 man midfield, and even then I have severe reservations - Nevertheless imho we should try a Carrrick-Morgan-Pogba triplet (though I know how effective Herrera is I would like to see how these particular players combine).

2. Rooney is absolute *****. Hopefully mourinho has seen enough now.

Well it has come to him being unable to sufficiently control simple balls to feet. Its embarassing. I dunno whether he's totally gone or whether its burnout. But at the very least he should be sent on a nice two week holiday in the sun.

3. Herrera should be starting games or at the very least one of the first options when making subs. But imagine what pogba could do if he had Carrick and schneiderlin behind him..

Yes YES YES!!

4. Ashley Young was brilliant. Excellent delivery on most of his crosses. Beautiful ball through for Rooney in the first half and if he had rashford pace it would probably have been a goal (or not with Rooney)..

Stop the hyperbole. Has it really come to this: to call brilliant, players who simply do the basics right?! He was functional. Decent.

5. Dont want to be harsh on the lad but when rojo headed the ball in the build up to the penalty, why did TFM stand and watch the ball waiting for it to come to him? You always get told to go to the ball, not wait for it to come to you. If he goes forward to that ball and clears it there's no penalty. Hopefully he'll learn from that.

The collective defence had a brainfart during the peno incident. Talking about TFM, I must say I quite liked him. Always positive and energetic trying to take the initiative. Blind on the other hand had a mare all match.

7. Said it since he signed. Romero can't kick a ball for ****.

You did. I remember. Cant understand how the fck he's actually the main GK for Argentina.

Decent game good result considering the last week. Thought everyone was good bar the 2 clowns that don't need to be named. Carrick and Herrera with 2 good finishes. Rashford with another debut goal in this competition :)

One of whom was actually not that bad...

Another good game by Periera. Watched all his games so far and having a good loan spell!

I dont think Carrick's lack of mobility/pace would be much of a problem in a midfield 3 with Schneiderlin and Pogba. Carrick has never really been one to run around anyway. He positions himself to intercept the ball a lot of the time, so if he covers the space infront of the back 4 intercepting, that leaves Schneiderlin to do the running and closing down, with Carrick there to collect the second ball. Obviously Pogba would chip in with his fair share of defensive work, but having those two behind would allow him to get forward more into the areas hes most dangerous.

As far as the front 3 go its a bit more of a headache. I think to get the best out of the team, and not just fitting individuals into the line-up, I would go for one of Martial/Rashford on the left. Both have a similar game when playing from ther left. Both get the ball down and drive towards the box, committing defenders, then either taking them on the inside for a shot, or stay on the outside for a cross.

To balance that threat on the left, I would have somebody like Young on the right. Putting in quality crosses for Ibrahimovic to get on the end of, or for Martial/Rashford coming in on the back post. If you have Valencia at RB and Young at RW, you are guarentee'd a **** of a lot of work rate down that side. Both have the ability to cover for each other and also have the pace to get back when needed.

Obviously setting up that way leaves out Mata and Mkhitaryan. I really havent seen enough of Mkhitaryan to know if he would be any good on the right, playing in a way that ive said above for Young. Or if he has the work rate to match and get back defensively. So it depends how Jose wants to play it. I think the team would benefit more from a 4-3-3, with Carrick, Schneiderlin, Pogba and Young, Ibrahimovic, Martial/Rashford. But then your leaving out some of the big name players that he may be under pressure to use. If he persists with the 4-2-3-1 then he needs to get the balance right. First off getting Rooney out of the team. But again who do you leave out in that formation. Do you go Carrick, Schneiderlin in the 2 with Pogba as no 10? Or put Pogba in the 2 (so not getting the best out of him), to play Mata/Mkhitaryan at 10?

He needs to find out what he wants and fast. No good being like LVG's first season when he stumbled on his best formation/players in around February.

Andy Mitten adamant Rooney is starting tomorrow. Sigh!!! Really hoped after playing 90 mins against Leicester he would be dropped. Let's see hope he's wrong!

Have you got a time machine United haven't played Leicester (Community Shield apart) yet so Roomey (not a typo he is starting to take up a lot of room) hasn't played 90 mins against them ;)

no bro its the wording,he meant after after playing 90 mins against northampton rooney would be dropped for leicester.im hoping hes on the bench too, appreciate all he has given the club but we wont progress until his role is reduced

personally id love to see pogba just behind zlatan but jose has selection issues all over the pitch imo

Who wants to bet if Rooney does not play, nothing significantly will change?

It was pretty unrealistic to think things would swing so quickly regardless of who's out there.

Building a side under a new manager takes time. Not just throwing mega money around and expecting the pieces to fit straight in and improve everything else around them.

I bet it will. He upsets the whole team. If he plays as a 10 you have better players playing out of possition and him and Zlatan getting in each other's space. And if he plays in a 3 Fellaini will be made to play DM and Pogba will have to be more disciplined like he played for France. Plus I read that about 79% of our attacks break down with Rooney on Squaka after the Northampton game. And he's not had an assist or a goal from a set piece in nearly three seasons.
