The Manchester United Thread

Pogba has been up and down so far at United but he has definitely had good performances. This whole Pogba hate is coming from rivals (not surprising) but they aren't all that bright so there you go.

Pogba's getting hate from rivals?

This is interesting. Which clubs you played where that's happened?

On to Chelsea then... please exploit this 3-4-3 formation Conte is using and we can get the win.

Really nice game, didn't have to break stride yet won really convincingly... perfect outcome and a nice buzz going into Chelsea on Sunday. Rooney was really good I thought, even his touch was much sharper, evident in Lingard's goal, and of course gave his regular 101% effort. Carrick controlled the game, Mata was exquisite, Pogba's strike and pen were both superb.

I've never wanted a player to score against United, but once we had the game wrapped up, I think we all wanted RVP to nick a consolation goal... the entire stadium were buzzing for him. The goodbye game we never had for the flying Dutchman.

Credit to those crazy Turks too, singing like mad even when 3-0 down and going nowhere.

P.S - I'm sorry to those who want this 3 man midfield, a little debate that has came up now and again recently on this thread, probably one that I may even of agreed with at a time, but it just doesn't work for me. Tonight (although not quite as much tonight as the other examples), Stoke, and Leicester was as good of attacking football as we've seen at Old Trafford in a long time, with Herrera paired with and giving the license to Pogba in the centre of the park, with Mata behind Ibra. I'll tell you why the 3 man midfield can't work, because Pogba can't operate effectively as the #10, it's a waste of his abilities... Paul Pogba is at his best when he gets the ball in this slightly deeper position like tonight, like against Leicester, like against Stoke, with runners and players ahead of him, threading through balls at will, switching the play, having space to latch onto shots, selectively making late arrivals to the box, having the complete freedom to stamp his authority in games, he's an animal when given this sort of license in this role... it's when he's at his best, not when having 9 or 10 men behind him every time he receives the ball, having to hold up the play or try to go at defenders on his own like the role he was given against Liverpool, and the role he would have to take up should we ever go with a Carrick-Herrera-Pogba midfield... It just won't work, it has to be Herrera-Pogba-Mata for me.

That's my opinion.

Jose Mourinho faces a tactical dilemma for Manchester United's trip to Chelsea

Jose Mourinho faces a tactical dilemma for Manchester United's trip to Chelsea | Football News | Sky Sports

Attention now turns to Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge, the second instalment of a daunting Premier League double-header for United. Mourinho will be hoping his usual approach will bear fruit in the familiar surroundings of west London, but while a draw at Chelsea is undoubtedly a good result in isolation, it might not be so desirable in the current circumstances.

History shows no team has won the title having been seventh after eight games. United are already two points worse off than at the same stage last season, and, even more alarmingly, a failure to beat Chelsea could leave them eight points behind Manchester City and Arsenal, who host Southampton and Middlesbrough respectively this weekend.

So while it would be understandable for Mourinho to exercise a degree of caution against Antonio Conte's side, United can ill-afford a repeat of their muted attacking display at Anfield. As Gary Neville noted on Monday Night Football, Mourinho's game plan needs attacking thrust to complement the defensive solidity.

Agree with this entirely. Mourinho does have a dilemma indeed. It's a hugely important game in context of the season I feel against Chelsea, where we really need a win.

..... Tonight (although not quite as much tonight as the other examples),Stole, and Leicester was as good of attacking football we've seen at Old Trafford in a long time .....

That's my opinion.

I think that's something that I and others need to keep in mind when we see different games to you guys. We've already had the discussion on the aforementioned league games, and last night until the boneheaded penaltys that was a hard watch as a 'neutral. ' All Utd position without looking like threatening. Even the 4th goal was your 4th shot on target the match that all went in. The same way I thought Leicester was real flattering and not a 4-1 game after watching it back following your comments. But when you're coming off the back of LVG, I can see the excitement at any Attacking play resulting in goals and wins that just weren't happening under him.

We had the simillar the early months of Klopp. We could see the improvemt with our own eyes by the game but when that didn't transition into results, you'd get on here 'but it's no better than Rodgers' etc.

The different perspective and excitement in goals and wins when you read something from somebody invested that has suffered through the Dutchman's boredom needs to be taken into account more when you read it as being way OTT.

That said, glad you had an enjoyable night the game mate. I'd be lying if I said I was happy with the result, smiles, but I am genuinely happy for you. You just can't beat going the match.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't fantastic stuff, Fenerbache did half the job for us being so poor, the big West Ham flop they took on offered them something different... but how many times would we have 30 shots and 1, maybe 2, hey maybe even 0 goals? Happy to see a bit of efficiency. That said, the thing I was probably most happy with was that after that decent display of first half pressing against Liverpool, we did it again last night, I'm not sure if it was overly noticed on TV, but Lingard, Martial, Rooney, Mata and Pogba all pressed pretty well in the final third (not Liverpool or Spurs intensity, more conservative pressing), I think it's something that would benefit us greatly and I'd like to see us keep doing it. Of course i don't mean constant 100mph pressing like you or Spurs, but just selectively pressing their backline when it feels right to, and not stand off so much like we did against City.

Cheers mate, it was mental - few guys after it were saying after it that it was the biggest attendance ever recorded in the Europa League (maybe group stage?) so it was nice to be a part of history.

I noted it. Pogbas second goal springs instantly to mind from Rooney doing just that.

Read some bollocks on him BTW overnight from Utd 'fans.' Personally thought he was as good as anything the park over the full game. People are now at the stage of narking at him for narkings sake.
