The Manchester United Thread

Shaw had a good game. Its nice to have a LB. Lets hope he can stay fit. Shame Martial didn't show for todays game. Would be nice to see what those two can do.

U18s lost on penalties last night btw. Going out in the youth cup in the 3rd round. Felt sorry for the lads. Came back from being brhind twice. Then Traore gets a silly red for petulance kicking out at a player after just being subbed on. Then Chong who was fantastic goes off with concussion on a stretcher. Then in injury time Levitt is like a statue in the middle due to cramp, playing the last part of xtra time with 8 players. Peno were terrible though tbh. No conviction.

Been very impressed with Shaw the last two matches. Thought he was fantastic last night. Let’s hope he gets some more mins now. It’s night and day between a on form Shaw and the rest!

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly may need surgery on a "serious" ankle injury, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The 23-year-old centre-back, who Mourinho said was injured while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, has not played for United since the defeat at Chelsea on 5 November.

He is not expected to miss the rest of the season.

"I don't want to be so pessimistic. I want to leave it with a doctor,"

"We are trying a conservative treatment. If the conservative treatment is not resulting, probably he will have a surgery procedure but let's wait a little bit more."

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones started Wednesday's 1-0 win over Bournemouth, and Mourinho said he was happy with his options at centre-back.

"During the whole season, we've had problems with central defenders but because the number is four or five, we manage always to have [players available] and Chris Smalling is playing amazingly well for seven or eight matches in a row maybe, so we are fine."

Jose on Mkhitaryan "I played [Anthony] Martial, [Juan] Mata and [Jesse] Lingard in the team. To have Micki (Mkhitaryan) means that I don't have one of them and, in this moment, I believe the other ones they deserve [the chance to play]."

Looks like he's going to be sold in the new year then!

Dont think he will be sold.

More that's him blown his chance for the rest of the season then, he won't be going in January maybe at the end of the season however.....

started the season well but hes been very poor recently and his body language suggests he may well know his time is up

Interesting that over the previous 10 years, Man Utd current 38 points would have them top of the table after 17 games in 6 seasons. Chelsea (35pts) would have been top once.

From Presser-

Manchester United

Speaking to #MUTV, Jose Mourinho has provided an update on Eric Bailly’s injury: “He goes to surgery, the decision is made. I don’t say [he’s out] for the rest of the season but it’s for the next two or three months.

Three year project
The boss admitted he knew it would be a tough job when he signed a three-year deal to become United boss in the summer of 2016, but he is no stranger to meeting high expectations. "I knew that was not going to be an easy job. I had that experience before. You go to clubs with a huge history where people look to the history and not to the moment and the expectations are high, but the job is difficult. But I have had that experience before at other clubs, so [it is] nothing new for me."

Improved tally points to progress
United's tally of 38 points after 17 league games would have been enough to top the table in each of the last 10 seasons, but Mourinho is focusing on the bigger picture. "We are second, the number of points could be first in other seasons, yes, but we are second. This is where we are. Not first, not third, we are second and, as I have been saying, match after match, one match at a time and let's see at the end of the season how many points and where we are."

Mourinho on his future
I said a three-year contract because it was the time myself and the owner and the board we decided on. Maybe it will be more. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy job. I had that experience before. We go to clubs with a huge history where people look to the history and not to the moment and expectations are high. The job is difficult but I’ve had that experience before in other clubs.

Mourinho on Griezmann
I don’t speak about players - especially players who belong to other clubs.

There is no sense of me speaking about players. But I like.

Mourinho on Mkhitaryan and Fellaini
He was asked about the duo and their futures.

His response:

Nothing to say in relation to that. They are both my players. 1 I signed 1 I didn’t, but I think they are good players.

Not a fan of January window
Jose says he's not a big advocate of the January transfer market. "If you can buy a player in January that you want to buy in June or July, so you have the chance to get him a few months earlier, then great. But just that."

More from Mourinho on January transfers
United have been linked with a number of players but here’s what Mourinho had to say about the chance of players coming:

I’ve nothing to say in relation to that.

I’m not a big defender of the January market but there are players and situations that sometimes you have the chance to do and you shouldn’t lose that chance.

Jose opening the door for a Jan @ManUtd departure? "Every player has a price. If a player is not happy, if a player brings with the request a number we consider good for us - like with Memphis and Morgan - I would never say no."

Can defo see Darmian and Blind looking to leave. And us trying to get one of Ozil. Or after Simeone comments about Griezmann being able to leave. Us finalising that deal. Will defo see some business ins and outs in Jan.

Just reported by Ducker and BBC-

Fellaini will miss the festive programme and isn't going to be back until the New Year now late Jan. #MUFC have decided he needs time to properly get over his knee ligament problem

Looking at Jose history in Jan window it highly unlikely u make moves. Only ones that can't wait for summer.

Strong dislike for this arsehole, but he's quite right here.

Swansea tried to play out from the back against MCFC. Tottenham tried to play out from the back + press high against City. Both were trashed.
Instead of tactics that suited Guardiola, MUFC controlled space, played for transitions + were a double save away from a result. #MCITOT
