Burnley 1-0 Leicester
De Ridder (5)

Leicester City travelled to Turf Moor to face Burnley in the 3rd round of the League Cup. Leicester’s Scottish midfielder Tom Cairney almost gave the foxes the lead with a thunderous shot after 4 minutes but it hit Lee Grant’s crossbar. The ball bounced kindly into Lee Grant’s hands and after a punt up field fell to De Ridder he finished with power after a Bruno Berner mistake. Straight from the kick-off Darius Vassell almost equalised but his shot was held by Lee Grant. Lee Grant made another good save 3 minutes later from Paul Gallagher. 3 minutes later a ball in from Kyle Naughton was headed in by Martyn Waghorn but the goal was rightly disallowed. Tom Cairney was once again close to scoring a 30 yard thunderbolt but this time Lee Grant somehow tipped it wide. Despite only having 1 shot on target Burnley were somehow on top thanks to Lee Grant and the crossbar.

Straight from the 2nd half kick-off Chris Eagle went past 3 Leicester player but was denied a fantastic goal by Ricardo’s feet. On 57 minutes it looked like Leicester has equalised but Miguel Vitor’s header was first cleared off the line by Dennis Appiah and his rebound was saved by Lee Grant. Next to be thwarted by Grant was substitute Steve Howard who’s shot was clawed away by ‘Keeper Grant. Ricardo’s mistake almost gifted Burnley a goal by on-loan Tottenham defender Kyle Naughton was on hand to clear off the line. Grant’s brilliance earned Burnley a place in the 4th round and a Man of the Match award, he spoke to the press after;

“I’m delighted to of been awarded Man of the Match and delighted to of earned a win against a very good Leicester team who troubled us all game, the defence stayed strong but they deserved the win, that’s football though if you don’t put away your chances you’re not going to score.”

Leicester 4-1 QPR

Yakubu (pen 38, 59)-
Mee (90+1)--

Leicester City scored for the first time in 4 games to win to halt a losing streak of 4 after a 4-1 against QPR. The first goal for Leicester in a game of which they took charge of from the word go was from former England striker Darius Vassell who finished from 20 yards after neat play from Franck Moussa and Andy King. The 2nd goal of the game for Leicester and the first of 2 from Yakubu came feom the penalty spot 38 minutes in after Belgian Franck Moussa was brought down by Maxime Baca. Yakubu emphatically sent Paddy Kenny the wrong way to put Leicester 2-0 up and give them a comfortable lead going into half-time.

Leicester’s dominance continued in the 2nd half with Vassell going close to getting his 2nd after some neat play by Yakubu meant Vassell had a chance to put the Foxes 3-0 up but his effort was acrobatically tipped onto the post by Kenny. QPR thought they had a way back into the game when skipper Adel Taarabt scored but his effort was ruled offside by the assistant referee. Leicester did however go 3 up after a Kasper Gorkss mistake left Yakubu and open goal to score into from 6 yards which the Yak duly obliged to do. QPR did eventually score through Scotland international Jamie Mackie as he scored an effort from 4 yards after a Sean Derry corner eluded Sol Bamba. It was Leicester who however had the last laugh as Man of the Match Franck Moussa’s ball was headed in past Paddy Kenny by Ben Mee, that his first senior goal. Martin O’Neill spoke to BBC Radio Leicester saying;

“It’s so good to get back to winning ways after a difficult run of 4 losses in a row, morale was low but this win has done wonders for the confidence and hopefully we can win a few more and catapult the us up the table into the promotion places.”

Millen Sacked!

Millen applauds the Robins fans in his last game in charge

Today Bristol City boss Keith Millen was sacked by chairman Steve Lansdown just 11 games into the campaign, the Robins who lie in 16th place had disappointed many fans after a horror start to the campaign. Picking up just 13 points out of 33. Millen had been without star player Nicky Maynard who isn't due back until January but Lansdown obviously felt he couldn't wait for Maynard's return. Millen took over from Steve Coppell in the summer after Coppell decided to leave the Robins weeks after he was appointed.

More to follow.

Hornets dent Foxes title dreams

marvinsordel-415.jpg

Sordell secured the Hornets victory

Watford manager Malky Mackay made 3 changes to his team that beat Norwich at Carrow Road on Saturday. Mackay bringing Lee Hodson in for Martin Taylor. He also bough in Stephen McGinn and Marvin Sordell in for Ross Jenkins and Troy Deeney.

Leicester made 6 changes for the team that faced Watford at Vicarage road. There was a surprise change in goal as English youngster Alex Smithies came in for experienced Portuguese ‘Keeper Ricardo. Vice-Captain Jack Hobbs came in for Sol Bamba. The other 3 changes were Cairney in for Wellens, Waghorn for Moussa, Gallagher and Chamberlain replaced Vassell and Howard.

Watford 2-0 Leicester

A serious injury to Martyn Waghorn which has the South Shield boy sidelined for 5 months overshadowed a fantastic game at Vicarage Road which Leicester were unlucky to leave with 0 points from. The Foxes lost striker Waghorn on 13th minute when he pulled up chasing the ball, a scan has revealed Waghorn has a torn Calf muscle. Things got worse when Nigerian Yakubu also had to be withdrawn with and injury 10 minutes later but the Super Eagles striker only picked up a knock and is expected to be in a week.

On the pitch a wasteful foxes strike force was punished in the worst way with Watford taking 2 very good goals to give them a win. Darius Vassell had a golden opportunity to put O’Neill’s men 1-0 up but his effort went wide from 10 yards after he cleverly turned Lee Hodson. On the other hand a fine passing move by Watford ended in a goal after a fantastic finish from Stephen McGinn who finally got the better of Alex Smithies who had silenced the Hornets for the first 38 minutes with some outstanding saves.

The second half started in similar fashion with Leicester once again wasteful in front of goal with Steve Howard somehow blazing over from 7 yards and Tom Cairney having a curling 20 yard effort just grazing the top of the crossbar. With Leicester pressing on for an equaliser Watford went on the counter attack and with the goal at his mercy John Eustace played a ball across the 6 yard box to leave an open goal for Marvin Sordell to tap into to give Watford back-to-back wins and pile more misery onto Leicester who drop to 9th after a torrid September when the picked up 1 win out 5 only scoring 4 goals and failing to keep a clean sheet. O’Neill who came 2nd in Augusts’ manager of the month will be hoping for a better month of October.

"Daylight robbery"

Police will be searching for David Marshall

Leicester made 4 changes to the team that lost against Watford at Vicarage road, on-loan Spurs defender Kyle Naughton coming in for Michael Lamey. Tom Cairney came into midfield for Richie Wellens. Lloyd Dyer and Alex Chamberlain also got starts ahead of Steve Howard and Franck Moussa.

Dave Jones made 3 changes to his Cardiff team after drawing against Norwich. Darcy Blake and Mark Hudson come into the defence with Paul Quinn and Dekel Keinan losing out. Jay Emanual-Thomas was replaced in midfield by Stephen McPhail.

Leicester City 1-1 Cardiff City

Martin O'Neill will be wanting to phone the Police after Cardiff somehow came awy from the Walkers Stadium with a point. Michael Chopra got Cardiff City off to a flyer as he beat the offside trap and rounded Alex Smithies to finish into an empty net to give the Bluebirds the lead after just 3 minutes. The goal seemed to spark Leicester into life and a teasing ball in from Kyle Naughton looked destined to be put away but somehow Chamberlain nor Vassell could reach it, from the clearance Cairney dragged a shout just wide. Leicester looked comfortable on the ball for the remainder of the half but just couldn’t break down a stubborn Cardiff defence.

Manchester City loanee Craig Bellamy almost gave Cardiff the prefect start to the 2nd half but his 30 yard thunderbolt struck the bar. Martin O’Neill decided to bring off a tired looking Alex Chamberlain for target man Steve Howard. His move almost worked straight away but Howard’s knock down to Vassell was just intercepted and put out for a corner. Lloyd Dyer needed 2 bites of the cherry to put a good ball in but the 2nd was met perfectly by Scot Paul Gallagher who nodded in from 3 yards to give Leicester a deserved equaliser. 2 minutes from team a sweet passing move from Leicester gave Tom Cairney a chance from 20 yards but his effort went just wide brushing the side netting on the way past. With 4 minutes of added to time to be played Leicester pressed on for a winner. Lloyd Dyer who had terrorised Cardiff’s defence all game had a golden opportunity to win it but his effort was saved by David Marshall. Man of the match David Marshall spoke to BBC Radio Cardiff after;

“It was a smash and grab and to come away from here with a point Leicester should be calling the police, it was daylight robbery. However we stood strong at the back and somehow kept it down at one, to be awarded Man of the Match really tells the story.”

18 minutes in while Ipswich had 10 men with Jimmy Bullard off receiving treatment Leicester almost took the lead with an audacious lob by Tom Cairney hitting the bar. Just one minute later though a Jack Hobbs ball over the top and Paul Gallagher took one touch before slamming the ball into the back of the net. Leicester were then the architects of there own downfall 5 minutes later when Miguel Vitor headed into his own net to bring Ipswich level. Straight from the kick-off the ball got shipped out to Lloyd Dyer who skinned 3 players before having his shot parried by Murton Fulop. Ipswich then went in front through Tom Soares after he headed in David Norris’s cross. Leicester where level just minutes later through tricky winger Lloyd Dyer after clever play from Paul Gallagher left Dyer a tap-in to take the teams in level.

Leicester came out a different team in the 2nd half with Man of the Match Paul Gallagher almost putting Leicester ahead but his effort whistled past the post. Just minutes later substitute Darius Vassell struck the crossbar with a vicious 20 yard shot. This the 2nd Leicester shot to hit the crossbar. In the 65th minute Leicester did take a deserved lead after great play from Darius Vassell and Yakubu, the Yak put Leicester 3-2 up after he took a cross on his chest and scissor kicked the ball into the Ipswich goal and past ex-Leicester player Marton Fulop. Leicester then looked like a team full of confidence with them coming close 3 or 4 times but it didn’t matter as they hung on to win. Manager Martin O’Neill spoke after the game;

“We’ve got to mojo back and it’s good news for us and bad news for the other teams, we just need 3 or 4 more wins and we’ll be back in the title race. Paul was fantastic again and he has been all season. Hopefully we can stop conceding silly goals and we’ll be winning more convincingly.”

Nice updates mate, keep going :) the form should pick up as players learn the way you play!! :D

Coventry City boss Aidy Boothroyd makes 2 changes to his team that lost 2-0 to Norwich City for the M69 derby against Leicester. Clive Platt makes way for Freddy Eastwood and Lee Carsley miss out with Gary Deegen coming in for the experienced midfielder.

Leicester City 4-1 Coventry City

Jonathon Grounds sent off (39)

With Coventry City shading the opening stages of the game but wasting opportunities when Leicester went on the attack in the 28th minute and scored the Walkers Stadium erupted. Great play down the right by Kyle Naughton, on loan from Tottenham, was rewarded when a pinpoint cross begging to be put in the back of the net was when Nigerian Yakubu headed in past Irishman Kieren Westwood. 10 minutes later Leicester had Alex Smithies to thank after a fantastic save by the young Englishman from a Marlon King shot. Just seconds after Smithies saved King’s shot Leicester had a golden opportunity to double there lead when Jonathon Grounds took down Paul Gallagher in the box just as Gallagher was about to score, Grounds was sent off by referee Chris Foy after denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Super Eagles captain Yakubu stepped up to take the penalty and tucked the shot into the bottom corner to double his and Leicester’s goals for the game. Leicester finished off strongly with Andy King going close but the half ended 2-0 to Leicester and the team walked off to a standing ovation.

Leicester then had a golden opportunity to add to there lead but a mistake from Keiren Westwood didn’t cost Coventry as Yakubu sliced his shot wide to keep the scores level and him on 2 for the afternoon. Coventry then took the game to Leicester and were soon back to within one goal when Freddy Eastwood bought down a ball over the top from Gary Deegen and smashed home past Alex Smithies who had denied the Sky Blues on previous occasions. But just as Coventry looked like they could get an equaliser an outstanding cross from Patrick Van Aanholt gave Yakubu a chance to get his hat-trick and a volley from 3 yards hit the back of the net to give the Everton loanee a fine hat-trick. Jack Hobbs then scored a header from a Paul Gallagher corner to give Leicester a 4-1 lead. Gallagher then nearly got one of his own 2 minutes later but his thunderous volley was superbly kept out by Westwood. The win left Leicester fan’s in delirium after beating there rivals 4-1 giving them bragging rights until they play again. Yakubu spoke after the game;

“To get a hat-trick in a derby game feels fantastic but to also win so convincingly is brilliant, the lads in the changing room are flying high as kites. The spirit is the best I’ve ever witnessed at a football

Dyer destroy's Palace

lcfc_307x230.jpg

Lloyd Dyer terrorised Palace's defence all game

Crystal Palace made 1 change to the team that last 1-0 last week against Norwich City, Dougie Freedman brings in Andy Dorman for injured Owen Garavan, on-loan Everton James Vaughan only makes the bench after being out for 4 weeks with a thigh strain.

Leicester City manager Martin O’Neill named an unchanged team for the 2nd game in a row after his team beat rivals Coventry City at the weekend 4-1, hat-trick hero Yakubu once again leads the line with Alex Chamberlain keeping his place.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Leicester City

Yakubu (44)
Vitor (62)

Leicester almost took the lead through a cross come shot from Yakubu on 5 minutes which had to be tipped wide by Julian Speroni. Julian Speroni was once again on top as he tipped over a Yakubu shot 2 minutes after. As Leicester pushed on to take the lead Crystal Palace looked dangerous on the counter attack with Steffen Iversen. Leicester did take a deserved lead 39 minutes into the game with Jack Hobbs scoring his 2nd goal in 2 games after heading in a Lloyd Dyer corner. A strong challenge from Andy King on Neil Danns set up a counter-attack for Leicester and with the pace of Lloyd Dyer down the wing they countered quickly and a ball across the 6 yard box set up Yakubu who smashed the finish into the roof of the net for his 4th goal in 2 games. With the half-time whistle sounding the Crystal Palace players looked relived to see the back of Lloyd Dyer.

The half-time seemed to of inspired Palace who came out a brighter team with James Vaughan and Steffen Iversen up-front. The 2 up front worked immediately for Palace as a great ball over the top flicked on by Vaughan fell to Darren Ambrose who finished emphatically to bring Palace back into it. Portuguese defender Miguel Vitor then put Leicester back into a 2 goal lead after he headed in a corner by Scot Paul Gallagher who’s set pieces had been poor up until the 62nd minute. A quarter of an hour later Darius Vassell had a golden opportunity to put Leicester 3 goals up after a glorious Kyle Naughton ball but his shot just whistled past the post. Leicester were then happy to pass the ball around and use Dyer’s pace to exploit the Palace defence. Man of the match went to commanding centre back Miguel Vitor. Unfortunately his English isn’t good enough to speak to press so manager Martin O’Neill called a press conference;

“3 wins in a row is fantastic and to be scoring so freely is fantastic, we still need to cut out conceding single goals in matches as it may come back to haunt us at a later date but hopefully we can keep scoring and winning. Being just 4 points behind 2nd place after such a poor September is brilliant, I’m proud of the lads.”

Leicester players celebrate Yakubu's winner

Martin O’Neill makes 3 changes to the Leicester team with Jack Hobbs missing out through injury and Patrick Van Aanholt through illness O’Neill brings Sol Bamba into the team at centre-back and England Under-21 international Ben Mee at left-back. O’Neill also starts Darius Vassell ahead of Alex Chamberlain who has been struggling for form.

Sean O’Driscoll made one change to his Doncaster side who lost 1-0 to Burnley, midfielder Paul Keegen misses out as Simon Gillet comes into the middle as O’Driscoll looks too strengthen up in the middle of the park where Doncaster were weak at the weekend.

Leicester City 3-2 Doncaster Rovers

Yakubu (72)

Leicester won there 4th game in a row after they beat Doncaster Rovers 3-2. Leicester took the lead after 10 minutes when Andy King’s shot hit the back of Shelton Martis and fell into the path of Darius Vassell who powered his shot past Northern Irishman Roy Carroll. Skipper Andy King then doubled the foxes lead after taking full advantage from a James Chambers mistake to score a venomous half volley after 22 minutes which almost took the net out the ground. On the brink of half-time Leicester almost went 3-0 up but Paul Gallagher’s ball across goal was somehow hacked away by Matthew Kilgallon. Thanks to that Donny went in just 2-0 down at half-time rather than 3, either way City deserved there lead and headed into the changing rooms with massive smiles.

Despite being on top all game Leicester shot themselves in the foot after Ivorian Sol Bamba gave away a silly penalty just 3 minutes into the half after taking down Billy Sharp in the area. Sharp dusted himself to take the penalty himself. “The fat bloke from Sheffield” sent Alex Smithies the wrong way and got Rovers back into the game. A scorching Lloyd Dyer run down the left side left the Rovers defence in tatters and his cross found Paul Gallagher 20 yards out who’s volley was tipped onto the post by Roy Carroll but the rebound fell to Yakubu who tapped into an open goal to re-instate Leicester’s 2 goal lead. There 2 goal lead was however shortly lived as Billy Sharp got Donny back into it for a 2nd time, this time a Moussa Kalisse through ball fell to Sharp who’s shot bent past Smithies in the Leicester goal to make the last 15 minutes a grandstand finish. Leicester then however took control of the game almost scoring 3 or 4 times but a mixture of woodwork, Roy Carroll and Doncaster players denied the foxes. Captain fantastic Andy King spoke to Foxes Player after the game;

“4 wins in a row is a fantastic achievement by everyone at the club, all the players, staff and fans can be proud of the run we’ve put together. We’re in it together and the fans are the people we’re doing it for and to see them happy is what we want.”

Leicester mawl the Tigers

r

Bamba celebrate's his first Leicester goal

Nigel Pearson makes 2 changes to the team that drew 0-0 to Sheffield United, Craig Fagan partner’s Matty Fryatt up front after Jay Simpson was dropped. James Harper who was signed in the summer comes into the middle of the park next to Robert Koren in place of Corey Evans, brother of Jonny Evans. Matty Fryatt plays against his former employees.

Martin O’Neill makes 2 changes to the Leicester team that scraped a 3-2 win against Doncaster Rovers, Alex Chamberlain comes in for ex-England international Darius Vassell and Patrick Van Aanholt replaces England under-21 international Ben Mee at left-back. Tom Cairney plays against the team he left just months ago.

Hull City 1-2 Leicester City

Bamba (45)

In Nigel Pearson’s first game against Leicester since leaving them in the summer his old team had most of the early chances with former Tiger Tom Cairney coming closest after great play by Paul Gallagher down the right. 30 minutes in a moment of inspiration from Leicester captain Andy King almost gave his team the lead but King’s 30 yard effort just went wide. Matty Fryatt almost gave Hull the lead after a missed tackle by Sol Bamba left him one-on-one with Alex Smithies but the Keeper cam out on top making a smart save done to his right hand side. From the corner Lloyd Dyer headed it out to Paul Gallagher who advanced 70 yards befor playing a through ball to Yakubu, his shot was parried by Vito Mannone but it fell to Dyer’s feet after he ran the length of the field and the speedy winger but Leicester 1-0 up. From the kick-off Yakubu robbed Craig Fagan and played a ball down the right to Kyle Naughton his cross fell to man of the moment Lloyd Dyer but his shot was saved by Vito Mannone, the rebound put wide by Alex Chamberlain. Just as it looked like Leicester would go in 1-0 up a Lloyd Dyer corner to the front post was flicked on by Sol Bamba past Mannone in the Hull goal to give Leicester a 2-0 lead going into half-time.

The opening stages of the 2nd half were very scrappy with neither team creating any clear goal scoring opportunities. The game stayed that way until Matty Fryatt headed in a Robert Koren corner giving Hull a way back into the game. Despite Leicester being pegged back they looked the more attacking team and Sol Bamba almost added a 2nd goal but his shot went horrifically wide from a Dyer corner. Then a fantastic save from a Vito Mannone denied Miguel Vitor a goal to put Leicester back into a 2 goal lead. With time running out and Hull looking tired Leicester one again went close with Mannone needing to tip over Andy King’s shot from distance. Despite one last heave from Hull it wasn’t enough and Leicester got 3 much needed point in the race for the title. Man of the Match Lloyd Dyer spoke after the game;

“It’s brilliant to see Nigel [Pearson] again he was fantastic while he was hear but it’s now time to move on and with Martin [O’Neill] at the helm we all believe we will go up this year, possibly as champions. We have both the confidence and belief in ourselves and others”

The Yak scored the winner against his old team

Pompey boss Steve Cotterill makes 3 enforced changes to his team which won 3-0 at home against Barnsley. Jonathon Hogg (thigh), Michael Brown (suspension) and Liam Lawrence (knee) all miss out with Dave Kitson, Richard Hughes and Tal Ben-Haim coming in. Pompey are only able to name 2 substitutes.

On the other hand, Martin O’Neill names an unchanged team against Portsmouth staying with Bamba and Vitor as centre-backs after Jack Hobbs failed a fitness test. Connor Wickham also doesn’t make his much hyped return after suffering a set-back in his recovery from a torn Groin muscle. Yakubu plays against his first English club.

A dreadful first-half which had only 1 shot during the whole half had many people asleep, the first 3 minutes had the only shot in the game with Alex Chamberlain shooting from 20 yards but his effort went straight into the arms of Pompey keeper Jamie Ashdown. With neither team looking up for the game the half seemed to be one of the longest half’s of football and when the half-time whistle every person seemed relieved.

Within 5 minutes of the 2nd half starting more action had happened than in the 1st 45, neat play between Yakubu and Andy King set-up the Yak nicely and his 20-yard daisy-cutter went into the bottom corner to give Leicester the lead against his former club. Goal-scorer Yakubu then had to off after a poor tackle from captain Aaron Mokoena. Leicester then had a golden opportunity to go 2-0 up when Carl Dickinson brought Miguel Vitor down. Paul Gallagher whose corner gave Leicester the penalty stepped up but his penalty was poorly struck and Jamie Ashdown saved. A minute from the end Alex Chamberlain had the chance to score and end his goal drought but his shot was tame and saved by Jamie Ashdown. Ricardo Rocha then added to Pompey’s injury woes after getting himself a 2nd yellow card just seconds from the end. Man of the Match went to Sol Bamba who spoke after;

“I’d like to say sorry who’s putting together the highlights shows as there isn’t really anything to put in the show. It’s obviously good to get another win and make that 6 in a row. Our aim is the Championship title and if we can keep this form up we will.”
