An American captain who sent a message in a bottle into the Atlantic got more than he bargained for when a reply from a Briton branded him a litterbug.
Capt Harvey Bennett, of Napeague in Long Island's Hamptons resort, received a parcel and a "ticking off" from Henry Biggelsworth in Bournemouth, Dorset.
Mr Biggelsworth found his bottle on a beach by Poole Harbour, six months after the captain cast it into the sea.
He wrote: "You Americans don't seem to be happy unless you are mucking about."
While you may consider this some profound experiment on the path and speed of oceanic currents, I have another name for it, litter
Henry Biggelsworth
The bottle was one of five Capt Bennett threw into the ocean in August.
The 55 -year-old, who owns a tackle shop, said he was "somewhat taken aback" by the rebuke.
"I kind of felt like no good deed goes unpunished," he told his local newspaper.
Ironically, it appears the captain's own ancestors embarked for the US in 1644 from Weymouth in Dorset.
He added: "It's a cosmic, planet-alignment thing."
Mr Biggelsworth's stern letter began: "Dear 'Captain' Bennett, I recently found your bottle while taking a scenic walk on the beach by Poole Harbour.

Coltrane used on NZ wanted poster

As law bans the publication of photos of juvenile criminals, Christchurch police are using the actor instead.
"Robbie Coltrane is not the burglar, but imagine him aged 16 with lank greasy hair and you have the picture," the poster says.
Leaflets have been distributed to homes in the areas of targeted residents.

Below the heading "Wanted" is the picture of Coltrane, underneath which are the words: "Active burglar in this neighbourhood".
"This is a picture of English actor Robbie Coltrane who you may remember from the Harry Potter films or the award-winning British drama Cracker," the poster says.
"Because of the Children and Young Persons Act 1989 Police cannot show you a picture of the 16-year-old burglar operating in your neighbourhood.
"He is 16-years-old, lives locally, travels by bicycle and burgles houses in your street.
"He will break windows to gain entry and ransack the property targeting electronic items, cash and jewellery," it adds.
A spokeswoman for the 58-year-old actor said she had no comment on the poster, as Coltrane was out of the country on holiday with his family and was unavailable.
