Been a silent reader and this looks amazing, one thing I would like to ask though, How do I get the ECC and EC to appear? I would like to have them show up in my save but I don't know how to get it to show up. I'm probably being stupid but is this normal?

Finally! Sam91 starts an FM14 story! Always enjoy all your stories. Looks good so far mate.

Thanks mate, ermm if you mean on the table they only appear after that team has qualified for the competition for the following season

Cheers for sharing your tactics, mate. I was wondering if you can also put up some screenshots of the tactical instructions you are using. The formation looks a lot like what MoPo is currently using at Southampton ;)

Transfers and August 2014

Plenty of ins and outs, maybe too many?
Champions League group very very tough
England won the World Cup :O

Transfers

So I cleared out a lot of the dead wood again in the window, the two notable outs must be Jay Rod and Jack Cork. I just feel with the way the clubs progressing and with them being just fringe players they'd only get in the way of younger, potentially better players playing. I chucked in some tidy clauses in the transfers anyway so if they play well and are signed by another team for a higher fee we'd rake a fair bit in.

Now to the ins and the big stand out one is Romelu Lukaku coming in for ?20m. I asked earlier in the window how much they wanted for him and they wouldn't budge from ?35m but then they accepted a ?18m bid from PSG. So i swooped in and poached him myself, he's a clear replacement for the ageing Rickie Lambert. I also signed a young English left back regen in Terry Digby on a free and he'll be Shaw's deputy. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was signed too and he'll be our number 1. Eder Balanta comes in to partner Lovren at the back. I managed to sign Rodrigo Gomez this summer after he failed to gain a work permit last summer and will rotate with Cerci on the right wing. Kenneth Omeruo comes in on loan after he impressed me whilst at Swansea last season. Rob Green was signed on a free, yes Rob Green. Hopefully his experience will help the younger McCarthy. I then noticed just how short we are in central midfield, especially as we're in Europe this season so I signed Barry on a free, his wages are pretty reasonable and he still has decent stats. I then loaned in Oriol Romeu from Chelsea too, he's versatile and young plus looks quite decent too. Gabriel Barbosa finally joined up with us after agreeing a deal in January.

League

Southampton 2 - 1 Fulham

Lukaku, Osvaldo

Solid win here they scored with their only shot on target all game, we could have scored more ourselves but Lukaku wasted a fair few chances. He did score 30 minutes into his debut though and was a constant menace. Nice start to the season.

Liverpool 1 - 0 Southampton

Shame here as we deserved something, but Liverpool have had a stunning start to their season so I'm not too upset. Still never nice to lose.

Southampton 2 - 1 Manchester City

Gomez(2)

7c531f2619daddbd59c30ac34f9a6f93.png

Great win here, all thanks to summer signing Rodrigo Gomez. His first was a tidy finish after James Ward-Prowse slipped him through nicely and his second a close range header after Shaw drilling in a delightful cross. Aguero scored late on to make for a nervous final few minutes but we clung on for a big win.

Monthly Review

So a pretty good month considering we played Liverpool and City. The Fulham game was a solid performance all round from a fairly new team considering all the summer signings and a new man in goal and up front. The Liverpool loss wasn't fair on the lads, we played well and deserved something from it really. But that win over City was superb and I was delighted it was Rodrigo Gomez who I've been chasing for over a year who decimated the City defence by himself.

Anyway onto our Champions League group... it couldn't be much worse really:

Yuk lets hope we can beat Olympiakos to third place and go into the Europa League.

Player of the Month

Rodrigo Gomez

For a young lad to come into English football and net a brace on his second appearance against City is impressive.

Doesn't mean too much after 3 games. Things to note are City are winless so far and Brighton are off to a great start.

Some brilliant signings there mate, Love picking up a golden oldie myself actually prefer it to all the young regens. Good luck with the new season KIU

Solid month in the league
Champions League campaign starts badly
Progress in the League Cup

League

Swansea 1 - 2 Southampton

Omeruo(2)

Kenneth Omeruo scores his first two goals for the club here, both identical goals. From a corner Lovren flicks it on and he taps home for both!! Dyer got one back in the second half but we were always in control.

Leeds 0 - 2 Southampton

Gomez, Ward-Prowse

Simple win with Gomez netting again and James Ward-Prowse scoring a lovely goal where he liked up magnificently with Barbosa.

Southampton 1 - 1 Stoke

Schneiderlin

Our only league home game this month and we limp to a disappointing draw :/ we should have won really but when you have a 1-0 lead its always dangerous.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Capital One Cup

Third Round

Southampton 2 - 0 Stoke

Schneiderlin, Lukaku

This match was literally 3 days before the league match and we totally dominated them. That's kind of the reason why I'm so disappointed about dropping points against them in the league just after!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Champions League

Southampton 1 - 2 Borussia Dortmund

Schneiderlin

If we played in the second half how we did in the first we might have got something from this match. Marco Reus was unbelievable though, simply unplayable.

So a pretty good month I'd say. Solid in the league and through in the Capital One Cup, which I'm going to try and play the young guns but also I want to win a trophy this year. Kenneth Omeruo has managed to pinch that centre back spot off Balanta so far, he's been very solid and Balanta has picked up a few knocks. Oriol Romeu, another loanee from Chelsea, has also impressed. We look so much better with Ward-Prowse in the CAM role over Lallana too so club captain Adam Lallana could be off... Ward-Prowse actually captained us against Leeds and that was the best performance of the month!! Kids becoming a real class act, so influential at such a young age.

Player of the Month

Morgan Schneiderlin

Great month from the French central midfielder adding goals to his game now too.

All going well so far.... if we'd have beaten Stoke we'd be top so that's another reason why I'm annoyed about that result. City still struggling though

Lukaku will take you to the next level. An amazing signing for Season 2.

At least with Olympiakos you'll at least be in the Europa League

Hopefully he cost enough!! Hopefully he settles quickly, gotta remember he's only 21 still.

Update in a bit :)

So close to a famous win in Madrid
Progress to the Quarter Finals of the Capital One Cup
Good league form continues

League

Southampton 1 - 0 Tottenham

Ward-Prowse

Solid win here, it was a tight game but a moment of class from Prowsey won us the game after he smashed in a worldie of a free kick!!

West Brom 0 - 0 Southampton

I don't get many 0-0 games but here's one. We just couldn't break them down and both teams walk away with a point.

Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton

Lukaku

46f5bc3a47cbfd8963dda33bfad60275.png

Before the match I would have taken this and after even more so!! Alex McCarthy had the game of his life for us and if it wasn't for him we would have been destroyed!! Nice to see Lukaku scoring against his old club though.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Capital One Cup

Southampton 2 - 0 Sunderland
(AET)

Lallana, Lukaku

0e95a40dd4c05645b46c8f61a39280a6.png

We simply couldn't break them down here until Lukaku came on. He gave us something different to Barbosa and it really seemed to help. It was his powerful run with the ball from a Sunderland corner in extra time which lead to Lallana's goal then he smashed in a quality effort of his own to secure the win.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Champions League

Real Madrid 1 - 1 Southampton

Balanta

1fe953e9c58c35b17f19b9669a195c8c.png

Close to a famous win here, Balanta scoring in the first half for his first goal for the club but Isco replied in the second with a scrappy effort. They were missing Ronaldo though but I'll still take this!!

Southampton 2 - 0 Olympiakos

Barbosa, Barry

A game of firsts here!! Our first Champions League win, and Barbosa and Barry's first goals for the club. Barbosa netting a great goal after being played in and Gareth Barry scoring a penalty just before half-time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monthly Review

So an undefeated month and considering we played Real Madrid and Chelsea away from home I'll certainly take that!! Frustrated a tad with both games considering we were leading at half-time but never mind. We're in a good position in our Champions League group to secure that third place spot and have a crack in the Europa League and even though we drew 2 of our 3 league matches this month we're still in touch with top spot.

In terms of player performances Lloyd Isgrove has been given a fair few starts lately due to Osvaldo picking up a knock and the lads done well!! James Ward-Prowse is still one of our best players and won Young Player of the Month again in the BPL. Lukaku is finally starting to score some goals but Barbosa seems to be struggling a bit, to be expected considering he's young and come from the Brazilian league. I'm sure he'll settle and become a great player though.

Player of the Month

Dejan Lovren

Mr Consistent just never seems to have a bad game. So reliable and solid.

Joint top with Chelsea and Stoke. It's all still very tight but will take shape in a month or two. City still struggling a bit though!!

I'm a firm believer that Tactics arent everything though, I've tried using other peoples tactics before and they didn't work for me at all. Hope this helps though mate

Thanks for sharing this, Sam! Some interesting decisions, which I'll def test with the Saints :)
