Through many sackings, I'm trying to build a tactic around a regista and I'm kind of drawing a blank on what type of formation to use. I've tried using what I call a Flying V, with (this isn't the team I'm using this formation with, just the save I had open):

This seems like a solid front to use with the regista, with the dribble more and more direct passing ticked in instructions. The big issue seems to fall on the defensive side however. With an aggressive offensive position in the DM slot, it tends to leak goals.

Would it be better served to roll with 2 DMs, dropping one of the BBMs as an anchor man? What would I do with the other CM? Add another ST, maybe a Treq next to or above the F9 as an AMC?

I'm running into the problem where I don't want to muddy up the area in front of the regista so he can do his unlocking of the defense, but I also don't want to have a gaping hole in the midfield. I also kind of want to slow-play (much lower tempo) and let him dictate the attack (Pirlo, kinda).

Any suggestions?

the defensive set of roles looks good here mate, but the 4 players in the attacking third are all going to be running into each other xD

The false 9 and the treq will look to use the space in front of the defense and behind the midfield. and the inside forwards will be trying to get into the channels between the cb and fullbacks. its gonna be difficult to create any chances. I would be inclined myself to use a BBM instead of the treq in the MC position. this will give you 3 runners for your regista to find in the inside forwards and the BBM. your f9 will bring the defense forward and make space in behind to play into also.

the scone dpictue is how a Regista should be used, he is a play maker and not overly an actual defensive midfielder, so either have a half back or Anchor next to him, or use a libero. The first picture, the role needs to be Anchor, with one of the two CM's as a playmaker, other otherwise it will leak.

So, like this then?

Was also considering something like this with either wingers or wide midfielders, but I'm not sure if it will press the attack enough and/or issues with my wingbacks (which I love using).

the regista, would be better off on the opposite side of an attacking wing back, so the anchor provides more cover in that area.
the first image looks fine logically but FM doesnt care about logic sometimes lol the second will give you deeper runs from the wingers, and more space in behind advancing full backs so would probably be really good.

Thanks for the help guys. Now for some testing.

i have always had better results and average ratings when the WB's are Full backs when you have wingers and have wing backs when you use Inside forwards. Also, when it comes to the regista, you ideally want some one infront of him and beside him, then he truely shines. But that is just my own experience.

I've found that a Regista works best alongside a DM with defend duty. The problem with an anchor man is he sits. Used in conjunction with a regista this means that you're surrendering the midfield. The DM will close down and win the ball but is not pulled all over like a BWM offering defensive stability and freeing up your regista to be open for the pass and recycle possession. I wouldnt tick the dribble more or more direct passing instructions as this completely negates the role which is to retain possession, similar to Xavi or Joe Allen at Swansea. You also need either Wingbacks or attacking full backs to give him more passing options as well as either a Trequartista or supporting Adv Playmaker. Needless to say a 4-2-3-1 deep system is the way to go. This set up has served me well on two different saves with two different tactics with both my regista and DM averaging out at about 7.5 ratings for the season.

Thanks. I've been trying variations of the two formations I posted above without much success. I've been running tests using Spurs to run tests since I think they're pretty well rounded. Taking in your advice, I'm going to test out

This (and the off-set CWB is just a thing I'm trying with creating space behind the IF)

Again, thanks for helping me brainstorm.

Let us know how you get on. I'd like to know if something I've suggested had actually worked for somebody!!!

I'd be quite interested in seeing your results. I'm currently playing a Real Madrid save, and it's very hit and miss. When it hits, I feel it is more to having better quality players than the tactic excelling, and it misses far more than I would like.

I am currently using a very similar formation to your second one in your first post, with the two DM positions. The only real differences being the treq you have being pulled back into an AP role in CM, the RB playing as FB(s) and my CD being stopped on the left and cover on the right.
