Wigan Continue Good Form

Wigan Athletic have continued their good form in the league and have been unlucky not to pick up more points than they have. Wigan have already played three of the 'big teams' this season and have picked up four points from these games and were unlucky not to get six. Scoring goals doesn't seem to a problem for Wigan but their defending has been a bit lackluster at times which could be a factor as to where they end up at the end of the season.

September

Premier League
1/9/13

Sunderland 2 vs. 4 Wigan
Drenthe(43) Kone(51) Adryan(67) Wellington Nem(89)

Pretty convincing result away from home and a good performance.

15/9/13
Wigan 0 vs. 0 West Brom

First points dropped of the season but we should have really won.

21/9/13
Man United 5 vs. 3 Wigan
Drenthe(4) Kone(23) Caldwell(65)

Plenty of goals but our defending is a bit worrying.

Capital One Cup 3rd Round
24/9/13

Stoke 2 vs. 3 Wigan
Di Santo(18, 88) Taarabt(pen 70)

Another close game with Stoke and I think the third in a row that's ended 3-2.

Premier League
29/9/13

Wigan 2 vs. 2 Liverpool
Drenthe(14, 36)

We were 2-1 up for quite a while before a goal in the last 10 minutes got them a point.

Wigan out of Capital One Cup

Wigan Athletic have been knocked out of Capital One Cup after defeat against Manchester United. Wigan had enjoyed a decent month up until this point as they won their three league games as they continue their good form. In fact, they were unlucky to be knocked out as they came back from 2-0 down to make it 2-2 before United scored a last minute winner. Wigan have been showing their progress this season as they don't seem to be letting up on their assault up the table. They will be disappointed they couldn't get to the later stages of this competition as it would give them a passage into Europe.

Another good result, shame about no clean sheet

Good to see Carroll score, he's not done a whole lot yet.

Wellington Nem(8)

Tough game but came out of it well with a clean sheet.

Capital One Cup 4th Round
30/10/13

Man United 3 vs. 2 Wigan

Not the draw I was hoping for but we made a good account of ourselves and in the end were unlucky not to get to extra time.

Wigan Gaining Speed as Form Continues

There seems to be very little stopping Wigan this season as they pick up another three wins out of four, only losing to Tottenham. People are really starting to wonder whether this will last the whole season but their results against the top teams will have to improve if the want to be considered among the best. Their away form is a definite improvement on last season as they're not dropping nearly as many points as they have been. Last season, December was the month where Wigan started to become unstuck and they lost ground on the rest of the field so it will be interesting to see how they manage it this season.

November

Premier League
2/11/13

Norwich 0 vs. 1 Wigan
Kone(90+1)

Lucky to get the win here but I'm glad we kept pressuring until the end

9/11/13

Tottenham 3 vs. 0 Wigan

Didn't play well at all, completely outclassed, shows the gap in quality at the minute.

12/11/13
Wigan 3 vs. 1 Bolton
Drenthe(9) Taarabt(15) Di Santo(38)

Good to bounce back with a solid win and three different goalscorers.

23/11/13
Wigan 2 vs. 0 Aston Villa
Wellington Nem(12) Drenthe(74)

Another good win to end the month but it's a shame Carroll isn't scoring a lot.

Wigan hit Rough Patch

Wigan Athletic have started to lose games on a more consistent basis in the league as they've had a tough run of games. This may be an indication that Conroy needs to strengthen in the January transfer window but it's unlikely that the chairman Dave Whelan will be able to fund this. So it comes down to whether or not Conroy will have the tactical ability to turn their form around after this blip. A top half finish will still be impressive for Wigan but after the great start to the season it may seem a disappointment if they don't get into Europe.

December

Premier League
7/12/13
Man City 1 vs. 0 Wigan

I went with my 4-2-3-1 attacking formation for this game to see how it is against big teams and we were unlucky to lose as we created lots of chances.

*7/12/13 Harry Redknapp named Newcastle manager*

14/12/13
Chelsea 6 vs. 1 Wigan
Anderson(72)

With the relative success of the tactic against Man City I thought I'd use it against Chelsea but we got absolutely blown away here.

21/12/13
Wigan 1 vs. 3 Everton
Carroll(13)

Got off to a good start but was pegged back soon after and we never put up a fight after that.

*22/12/13 Paul Lambert sacked as Aston Villa manager*

26/12/13
Wigan 4 vs. 2 Middlesbrough
McCarthy(29) Wellington Nem(31) Carroll(39) Drenthe(52)

Good to get back to winning ways, pretty comfortable in the end.

28/12/13
Swansea 0 vs. 1 Wigan
Kone(87)

A good result away from home with a clean sheet to boot.

31/12/13
Wigan 0 vs. 0 West Ham

Shame we couldn't get a goal to win it but another clean sheet isn't bad.

(Sorry no league table)

Conroy Offered Villa Job!

Conroy has been offered the Aston Villa job after the sacking of Paul Lambert in December. Wigan fans were worried that he would be tempted by the large transfer budget but Conroy refused almost instantly and pledged his future to Wigan Athletic. This seems to have rallied his squad as they got back to winning ways, losing only one game to Arsenal. It seems that the push for European spot is back on as they have found their winning touch. Wigan have also progressed to the fifth round of the F.A Cup and they'll hope for kinder draws than in the Capital One Cup. If they do manage to win the cup or even get to the final then they will be able to get into Europe in that way.

January

F.A Cup 3rd Round
4/1/14

Wigan 4 vs. 2 Bristol City
Anderson(39) Di Santo(74) Sulejmani(82,89)

A little harder than I imagined it to be but two late goals saw us through.

*6/1/14 Stale Solbakken hired as Aston Villa manager*

Premier League
11/1/14

Arsenal 4 vs. 0 Wigan

I can't remember what tactic I used for it but whatever one I used we were completely outclassed.

18/1/14
Wigan 5 vs. 1 Sunderland
Carroll(32, 39, 45) Caldwell(59, 87)

A good win to bounce back with as we battered them throughout the game.

F.A Cup 4th Round
25/1/14

Leeds United 1 vs. 2 Wigan
Taarabt(pen 9, pen 90+2)

We deserved to win this game despite only scoring two penalties. They scored from a penalty which they shouldn't have gotten and it's quite weird that all three goals were penalties.

Premier League
28/1/14

West Brom 2 vs. 4 Wigan
Kone(23, 74) Carroll(26, 86)

Another good win with plenty of goals and good to see Carroll scoring regularly.

Wigan Hit Second Slump

Wigan are enduring their second run of poor performances, picking up only five points in February though they've had to play some tough teams. Some people would say that picking up a point a piece against Liverpool and Man United would be a good result but that shows how far Wigan have come as a team. Also scoring 3 against Newcastle and not winning the game could be cause for concern for the manager. However they are through to the 6th round of the F.A Cup after winning the replay against Aston Villa though they made hard work of it in the end.

February

Premier League
1/2/14
Liverpool 1 vs. 1 Wigan
Di Santo(72)

Unlucky again not to win but Liverpool seem to like drawing with me.

5/2/14
Wigan 2 vs. 2 Man United
Carroll(58) Ramis(80)

Our first point against United which I'm pleased with.

9/2/14
Wigan 3 vs. 2 QPR
Caldwell(17) Carroll(53) Sulejmani(55)

A solid win but the last few minutes were a bit more nervy than expected.

12/2/14
Wigan 3 vs. 4 Newcastle
Carroll(28, 34, 78)

A real shame we couldn't win this as Carroll played extremely well but our defence was poor. Good to see Carroll scoring so much though.

F.A Cup 5th Round
15/2/14

Aston Villa 1 vs. 1 Wigan
Drenthe(86)

An error from Al-Habsi late on made me think we were going out after we dominated but we finally got a goal to force a replay.

F.A Cup 5th Round Replay
25/2/14

Wigan 4 vs. 3 Aston Villa
Wellington Nem(9) Taarabt(10) Kone(18, 47)

We were 3-0 up and they pegged us back to 3-2 and Kone made it 4-2 before they made it 4-3 and we just managed to hold on.

(No league table again, sorry)

Wigan's European Challenge Loses Momentum

The form of Wigan seems to be becoming more hit and miss than the start of the season; three wins, two draws and a loss this month is inconsistent form and will worry the manager. The performances against the big teams are also still a worry as they pick up very few points against strong teams. Wigan missed the chance to reach the F.A Cup semifinal at the first time of asking as they could only draw against Wolves and will have to face them at the DW in a replay which they really should win.

Went 1-0 up early on but we were pegged back and never really got back into it.

15/3/14

Drenthe(65)

Another close game against one of the teams close to us and I'm glad we won.

19/3/14

Another game against a big team where we were outplayed.

FA Cup 6th Round
22/3/14

Wolves 1 vs. 1 Wigan

We were against a lower league opposition and should be winning this game but we were lucky to get the draw after going down to 10 men.

Premier League

Wigan Go Month Without Win In League

The slight blip in form that Wigan were enduring has turned into a full rot as they go a whole month without a win in the league. They managed to pick up a win at the start of the month but that was the F.A Cup 6th round replay and doesn't count towards their league standing. Not only have Wigan gone a month without a league win they also fell one short of the final hurdle in the F.A Cup, losing to Tottenham in the semi-final after extra time. This poor form cannot continue if Wigan are aiming to get into Europe as there are three teams below them that are within three points of them. Any slip up now could cost them their European spot, and their run in isn't the easiest...

Wigan Get Into Europe!!

Manager Jordan Conroy has done what seems to be impossible by steering Wigan Athletic into Europe. Three wins from a possible three at the very end of the season sealed their place in the playoff spot for the Europa League. The fans are absolutely ecstatic about this and cannot believe that their club will be in a European competition next season. We spoke to chairman Dave Whelan about it: "I really don't know what to say. I never thought that when I took control of the club that we would ever compete in a European competition. This is part of the plan that Jordan set out when he took over but I had wondered how realistic it was but he's proven me wrong and I couldn't be happier".

End of Season Review

This was an outstanding season from my point of view as I thought it would take ages to get Wigan into Europe, though to be honest we were unlucky not to get in last season but lower teams won the cups. Our defence seemed to be better as I think there were more clean sheets than last season. We still need to improve our results against bigger opposition but I think it's still an improvement on last season. We've lost the reliance on Kone for goals as well, though Carroll did start scoring a lot for us in the last few months we've had plenty of scorers from other positions. It was also good to have a long cup run and we were pretty unlucky not to reach the final; the way we defended for the first part of the game when we scored the penalty I thought we would see it out but we just couldn't. The Capital One Cup draw wasn't very kind to us so hopefully that will change next season.

Plans for Next Season

One thing I need to do is to bring in another high class goalkeeper in case Al-Habsi gets injured, or to replace Al-Habsi as number one and have Al-Habsi cover. I would like to bring in Carroll again either on another loan of permanently as well as Abu from Man City who played really well for us. I would like some cover for midfield as I think we don't have a lot of strength in depth in that area. Di Santo should probably be replaced as he's only 2 1/2 stars and I think I could get Ademilson with the funds I get from him.

Transfers

I knew that this season I would need to bring in a few higher profile names if I want to carry on competing at the top and keep myself in European places at the end of next season. One thing I've needed to do for a season or two is bring in a replacement or at least a decent cover for Al-Habsi, as one long term injury to him and that would basically be my season over. Di Santo also needs to be replaced as I don't think he's really top team quality and I'll be looking to bring in Ademilson with the funds. Also another quality defender could prove useful.

View attachment 310463

I think I did pretty well in this transfer window bringing in some quality players. Stefan Savic was a good buy despite his reputation at City, as he's a four star player according to my scouts and has a few years left in him. I wanted to bring in Andy Carroll again but permanently but I had spent too much on young players that will come next year so I had to loan him but I do have the option to buy him this time. I've also brought in Abu again from City as he was really good for me last season. I think my best buy of the window was Jonathon dos Santos as he's a really good player but for some reason was going incredibly cheap from Barcelona. It was looking like I wasn't going to go another transfer window without bringing a goalkeeper but I somehow managed to persuade the board to make the outlay for Ruffier. Hopefully these transfer will help me secure a European spot again this season.

My Top Three Transfers - dos Santos, Ruffier, Savic:

Conroy offered Everton job!

Successful Wigan Athletic manager Jordan Conroy has been tempted away from the DW Stadium for the second time as Everton approach him after the departure of David Moyes to Schalke. Everton have a higher reputation than Wigan and it would be seen as a step up for Conroy but after the hard work he's put in at Wigan he wasn't about to go anywhere soon. Dave Whelan was relieved when Conroy turned down the contract offer to stay at Wigan. The fans will also be pleased at this outcome and will be hoping that he can replicate the form that the team showed last season to claim a Europa League spot. If pre-season is anything to go by, then Wigan are ready to rub shoulders with the big teams of Europe.

Summary

A pretty good pre-season with some good results but some bad ones as well but it's helped me decide on my tactics for the season. I'll be using a 4-1-2-1-2 Counter which I had last season and at the end got me a 3-0 win against Chelsea but it wasn't great for the rest of the season so I've modified that and it will be my big game tactic. I'll be using the same tactic but Control/Attacking for slightly weaker or similar rated teams and I have a 4-2-3-1 for significantly weaker teams. I'm glad that my wingers (barring Drenthe) can play AMC as it means I can use them often, despite not using a 'winger' tactic this season. Depending on how much I use him I may try and cash in on Drenthe this season before he becomes worthless and buy a decent AMC/MC with the money. Hopefully we can have another successful season!

My Aims For This Season:

Reach the semi-finals of either the F.A Cup or Capital One Cup
Qualify for the group stage of Europa League
Come third in that group, or qualify from it depending on strength of teams
Come at least 6th again in the league
Keep at least 15 clean sheets

Board Aims For This Season:

Quarter Finals of the Carling Cup
Sixth Round of the F.A Cup
First Knockout Round of the Europa League
Respectable league position

Giantkillings Make Perfect Start For Wigan

Wigan seem to be making a statement early on this season that they are not a team to be messed with as they have taken maximum points from their first three games. This itself would not be an amazing achievement but the games in question were Chelsea away, Man United at home and Everton away. They managed to achieve these results with a trip to Hungary and back in between as they had to qualify for the Europa League group stages, which they just managed. If Wigan can keep up this form for the rest of the season they will be up there amongst the Champions League places come May.

Wigan Reign Supreme in Liverpool Battle

The Capital One Cup 3rd round saw a battle of the northwest as Wigan played Liverpool. With Wigan's blistering start to the season they were the favourites going into this as they played at home. However Liverpool took the lead on the hour but a couple of tactical changes saw the substitute Wellington Nem equalised late on. The game went to extra time where Liverpool took the lead again, only for Wellington Nem to equalise again. With penalties looming Wigan got a corner and Stefa Savic nodded the ball past Reina to give Wigan the win. Conroy was ecstatic after the game and you could see why, his team battled hard right up until the end. Wigan have been performing above expectations recently but in Conroy's 100th game in management Wigan crumbled and lost 2-0 to West Brom. They will be hoping they can pick themselves up after that defeat.

Two goals late on after dominating the game.

Conroy becomes Algeria manager

Wigan manager Jordan Conroy has become manager of the Algerian national team. When questioned about it Conroy said, 'I've enjoyed a lot of success at Wigan and I wanted to see if I could bring that to an international stage. I will still be Wigan manager and I will not neglect my duties here'. Wigan Athletic have been in sparkling form in their Europa League group as they have won their first three games, without conceding a goal. This includes a difficult trip away to HSV where a late Andy Carroll goal won them the game. They also negotiated a trip to Sweden where they could have slipped up but they dispatched them with ease. Wigan have also kept up their good form in England apart from a 1-0 loss away to Stoke. They also overcame their rivals Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in the Capital One Cup. It's a tough start to November as they have to play HSV, Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham in a row. It will be interesting to see how many points they can pick up from that.

Wigan Struggle Through Tough Fixtures

After a tough run of fixtures Wigan have managed to come through them with a decent amount of points. They followed that with two wins against Wolves and QPR which overall makes for a decent month for Wigan Athletic. This is topped by them qualifying from their Europa League group with two games in hand and yet to concede a goal. It took another late goal from Andy Carroll to win them the game but route 1 football seemed to work as Ruffier launched the ball upfield which Carroll got on the end of before taking it round the keeper and scoring. Things are looking good for Wigan as they have a Capital One Cup quarter final to play in next month as well as the rest of their Europa League group plus some very winnable games in the league.

F.A Cup 3rd Round Draw

Leicester vs. Wigan

November

Premier League
2/11/14

Wigan 2 vs. 0 Bolton
Anderson(5) Ademilson(56)

Another good win against Bolton, easy enough with the early goal.

Europa League
6/11/14

Wigan 1 vs. 0 HSV
Carroll(84)
*Wigan qualify from group*

Another late goal from Carroll wins us the game and puts us through. Should have been more goals as we had 6 clear cut chances.

Premier League
11/11/14

Wigan 0 vs. 1 Man City

Only a penalty separated the sides and according to the press after it was a questionable one but I didn't think it was.

15/11/14
Liverpool 1 vs. 3 Wigan
Anderson(52) OG(62) Kone(75)

A really good win against a pretty tough Liverpool side.

*15/11/14 Chris Hughton sacked from Norwich*

22/11/14

Wigan 1 vs. 1 Tottenham
Anderson(pen 8)
(Andy Carroll injured - broken foot - 3/4 months)

Again they only score by a penalty but this time it was a questionable one.

*22/11/14 Michael Laudrup sacked by Swansea*

*25/11/14 Steve McClaren becomes Norwich manager*

26/11/14
QPR 0 vs. 3 Wigan
Ademilson(1) Kone(24, 37) De Ceglie s/o(71)

A solid win away from home.

29/11/14
Wolves 0 vs. 1 Wigan
Sulejmani(89)

It took a late goal but we got the win in the end which we deserved.

*29/11/14 Mark Hughes sacked by QPR*
