With My Little Pick and Shovel - A Cardiff City Story

SQUAD REPORT
View attachment 125516
Now that we're about to embark on our first season in the Championship, I thought it would be a good time to go through the squad

GOALKEEPERS
1.Karl Hodges
View attachment 125515
Undisputed number 1 keeper Karl Hodges joined us from Aberdeen 2 years ago and is a solid goalkeeper in the Football League. He's the only keeper in the first team squad but we have backup ready in the reserves

FULL BACKS
2.Ray Bloom
3.Lewis Richards
12.Will Powell
17.Richard Peake
View attachment 125514 View attachment 125513 View attachment 125512 View attachment 125511
We have two very good full backs for this level in Richards and Bloom as well as two solid backups in Richard Peake and Will Powell, who can also play centre back. Richards and Bloom are both capable going forward as they proved last season and I hope they are as effective this time around

CENTRE BACKS

4.David Rogers
5.Brendan Lynch
16.Ian Day
34.Alekos Montesantos
View attachment 125509 View attachment 125508 View attachment 125507 View attachment 125506
We have, in my opinion anyway, the perfect blend at centre back in our squad. Two good players at this level, a dependable backup and an up an coming player who looks set to be a superstar. We also have left footers and two right footers to improve the balance and ensure that an injury to Lynch doesn't leave us screwed in the left centre back slot

MIDFIELDERS
6.David Walker
8.Ryan Smith
15.Terry James
33.Stephen Hopkins
View attachment 125510 View attachment 125505 View attachment 125504 View attachment 125503
A decent midfield with my only concern being a lack of depth in the box-to-box role. We only have David Walker who can play there naturally but David Rogers can play there which eases my concerns. Terry James is a coup and his experience is invaluable while Stephen Hopkins is just good to have around

WINGERS
7.Willie King
13.Niall Higton
14.Ceri Lacey
30.Carl Peters
View attachment 125502 View attachment 125501 View attachment 125500 View attachment 125499
A solid selection of wingers and we have good depth on both flanks. Lacey and Peters have experience beyond their years whilst Higton and King have the rawness and youthful exuberance to be a real handful at this level. King will usually start on the right as Peters is barely a League 2 winger (Although he somehow managed 25 goals and 20 assists across 75 appearances in League 1) while there will be plenty of competition on the left

ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS
10.Jose Maria Martinez
Ollie Robson
View attachment 125498 View attachment 125497
Its a bit of a shame that Robson will miss most of the start of the season through injury as he was sensational last season when he racked up 13 assists and won 12 Man of the Match awards. At least it means Martinez will have to hit the ground running if we want a good start

ATTACKERS
9.Mark Giles
11.Phillip Osbourne
18.Harry Kane
31.Billy Coveney
View attachment 125495 View attachment 125494 View attachment 125493 View attachment 125492
Now this is where the squad really shines. We have a Wales international who's scored 52 league goals in 115 league games for Wrexham in Mark Giles. Last season's League 1 top scorer with 33 goals and Wales international Phillip Osbourne. England's all time record goalscorer with 91 in Harry Kane and fan's favourite Billy Coveney who's scored 47 goals in 98 games for Wrexham

AUGUST

Our first month in the Championship, my first month in the Championship for about 13 years and there are some HUGE teams in this division, here we go....

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 1-0 Blackburn Rovers

View attachment 125341
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, Smith (Hopkins 76), Peters (King 57), Martinez, Higton, Giles (Osbourne 76)

I said that, with Ollie Robson out injured, Jose Maria Martinez had to hit the ground running and he certainly did that! A goal within 8 minutes of his debut sent this North Walian town into ecstasy as we win our first game in the second tier since 1982

LEAGUE CUP FIRST ROUND
Wrexham 1-1 Oldham Athletic

Oldham win 4-2 on Penalties
View attachment 125340
Hodges, Brown, Rogers, Montesantos, Richards, Walker, Hopkins (Smith 45), King, Martinez, Lacey, Osbourne

My incredible record of getting knocked out in the first round of the League Cup continues as we succumb to a poor loss to a poor side

SKY BET CHAMPINSHIP
Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Wrexham

View attachment 125339
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, Smith, King, Martinez (Osbourne 72), Lacey (Higton 62), Giles

We played very well today but just couldn't get any shots on target. A decent performance and if we continue with these we'll stay up. Nice to see Nathan Claudon again, remember him?

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 1-1 Norwich City

View attachment 125338
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, Hopkins, Peters, Martinez (Powell 57 [Brown 90]), Lacey, Giles (Osbourne 68)

My fault we didn't win today. 1-0 up and doing well and I bottled it, meddled with the system, dropped deep and were lucky to escape with a point

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Aston Villa 1-2 Wrexham

View attachment 125336
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James (Smith 58), King, Martinez (Osbourne 76), Lacey, Giles

I told you there were some huge clubs in this division and we visited one here as we played at the newly built 30,000 capacity George Ramsay Stadium. We grabbed all three points via a certain Mr. Giles.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 3-2 Crystal Palace

View attachment 125335
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James (Smith 72), King, Martinez (Coveney 76), Lacey, Giles (Osbourne 45)

NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA BILLY COVENEY, COVENEY, BILLY COVENEY!!!! Boy-wonder Billy Coveney does it again as he puts Palace to the sword, scoring a brace in his first ever Championship game. Phillip Osbourne also scored his first ever Wrexham goal today

Middlesbrough 1-2 Wrexham

View attachment 125332
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch (Montesantos 79), Richards, Walker, James, Peters, Martinez, Lacey (Higton 55), Giles (Kane 59)

Another new stadium! Boro have left the Riverside after just 29 seasons there. The Middlesbrough Stadium is nice, especially when its full of jubilant Welshman following a crushing, 2-1 victory!

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

View attachment 125331
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker (Smith 67), James, Peters, Martinez (Coveney 67), Lacey, Giles (Day 86)

We got absolutely battered but we held strong, hold our luck and hit Wolves on the break with Carl Peters, yes the man I described as "barely a League 2 winger" scoring the winner

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Luton Town 3-2 Wrexham

View attachment 125330
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, Peters, Martinez (Coveney 63), Lacey (Higton 80), Giles

Very disappointing. To dominate, concede two goals in two minutes before half-time, come back but then lose our concentration and lose 3-2 is absolutely disgraceful

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Bradford City 1-0 Wrexham

View attachment 125329
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James, Peters, Martinez, Lacey, Giles (Coveney 53)

Another dominant performance but no points against a team we really should be beating. Shame.

Wrexham 2-2 Everton
View attachment 125192
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James (Smith 69), Peters, Martinez (Coveney 58), Lacey, Giles (Osborune 79)

A solid performance against a HUGE club who really should be in the Premier League. To take the lead, go behind and then equalise against such a huge club shows great character.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Burnley 1-2 Wrexham
View attachment 125191
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James (Smith 68), Peters, Martinez, Lacey (Higton 68), Giles

We fell behind early on but soon put that behind us and took the lead just over 20 minutes after falling behind. After that we stood strong, dug deep and defended well to take home all three points

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 0-1 Sheffield United

View attachment 125190
Hodges, Bloom, Rogers, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James, Peters, Martinez (Coveney 65), Lacey, Giles (Osbourne 65)

Its never good to lose at home but the Blades are flying at the minute and to keep it to 1-0 was pretty decent. We weren't at all clinical enough tonight, getting just 1 of our 11 shots on target That's not good enough.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 2-0 Barnsley

View attachment 125189
Hodges, Bloom, Powell (Day 83), Lynch, Richards, Walker, Smith (Kane 83), King, Martinez, Lacey, Giles

A very good performance bagged us a very nice three points. That combination makes me a very happy manager

Ipswich Town 2-0 Wrexham

View attachment 125184
Hodges, Bloom, Powell, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James, King (Osbourne 77), Martinez (Coveney 59), Lacey (Smith 77), Giles

We played well but couldn't quite put the ball into the net which was a huge shame. Ipswich took their chances and we didn't, Ipswich showed their experience, we didn't.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
Wrexham 3-2 Swindon Town

View attachment 125182
Hodges, Bloom, Powell, Lynch, Richards, Walker, James (Smith 90), King, Martinez, Lacey (Higton 62), Giles

Oh Mark. He's flattered to deceive a few times this season but there was nothing deceptive about his performance here as he put Swindon to the sword, banging in a spectacular hat-trick and getting us the three points

Wow! Two nearby teams (geographically) served up an absolute classic here at Anfield as we share the spoils in an epic encounter. To come from behind 3 times is pretty impressive but to come from 2 goals down with last than 10 minutes to go at Anfield is exceptional an that's exactly what we did. We had the chances to win and on another day it could have 7-4 to Wrexham

ROBINS BRING IN IRISH TRIO

View attachment 123526
Wrexham have today announced the signing of three players for a total of around £170,000

All three players have joined Wrexham from the Emerald Isle and arrived in Holyhead yesterday ahead of their medicals and announcement, so who are they?

The first announced was the least expensive signing, that of defender Colm Kavanagh, who has joined Wrexham from Dundalk for £4,000

The 18 year old spent three seasons at Oriel Park, making 2 appearances for Dundalk as well as winning a cap at Under 19 level for Ireland

The youngster can play anywhere across the back line and could prove to be a vital asset in the future
View attachment 123519

The second signing announced was the signing of Gerard Kelly, who's joined Wrexham from Derry City for £13,750

Defensive midfielder Kelly, 18, has been touted as a "future Roy Keane" by the Irish press since his debut for Ireland Under-21s at the age of 17

Northern Ireland born Kelly has already made 37 senior appearances in the Irish Premier Division and looks a promising prospect
View attachment 123518

Last but certainly not least is Lee Callaghan, who has joined Wrexham for the huge fee of £150,000

Callaghan, 17, has joined Wrexham from Dundalk following just one full season, in which he made 3 league appearances, scoring once

Callaghan, who made his senior debut in the Irish League Cup final, also has 3 Under 21 caps, making his debut against the Netherlands and the age of just 17

WREXHAM SIGN LOAN STARS

View attachment 123515
Wrexham have today announced the signing of two loan players, who have joined the Robins until the end of the season

The duo have both come from Premier League clubs and have come in to bolster the squad at the Racecourse

The first signed was Mike Salt, who's joined the Robins on loan from Leeds United until the end of the season

Salt, 18, can play in both central midfield and in behind the striker and has been brought in to provide backup in those spots
View attachment 123514

The second signing was that of Matt Jenkins, who has come in from Bournemouth until the end of the season

Jenkins, like Salt, can play in both central midfield and in behind the striker and has been brought in to bolster those areas

Jenkins, 21, has never made an appearance for Bournemouth despite joining from Bolton for £575,000 back in 2028, instead making a handful of appearances at Blackpool, Crawley, Port Vale, Peterborough and Colchester United

As the transfer window draws to a close, Wrexham have started to spend money on their first team as they bring in two strikers for a combined fee of £145,000

The first brought in was Danan Eaden, who has joined Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle for £60,000

Eaden, 23, has been brought in to provide backup following Billy Coveney's loan move to AFC Wimbledon and the retirement of Harry Kane, who has moved onto the backroom staff at Wrexham

English striker Eaden started his career at Chelsea before joining Plymouth following his release in 2029
View attachment 123483

The second striker brought in was Laurence Ward, who has joined Wrexham from Hibernian for £95,000

27 year old Englishman Ward, who started his career at Arsenal, has also been signed to act as backup

The Sidcup born striker has had a varied career, turning out in all four divisions in the Football League as well as the Conference National, playing for Arsenal, Brighton, Bury and Kiddeminster, before finding home in Scotland with Hibernian, where the target man scored 28 goals in 111 appearances

ROBINS BRING IN FIVE FOR NOTHING

View attachment 123142
As the sun breaks at the beginning of the transfer window, Wrexham have announced the arrival of five players on free transfers.

The first signing announced was the signing of centre back David Foster on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Manchester United

22 year old Foster, who has been capped at Under 20 level by England, never made a league appearance for United in the 7 seasons he was on their books, instead spending time on loan at Dundee United and Blackpool
View attachment 123140

The second player to sign for Wrexham as right back Jamie Fishwick, who has signed a three year deal with the Robins

The 22 year old will be a familiar face to both Robins fans and manager Matthew Hawkins, with Fishwick spending time on loan at Wrexham after Hawkins bought him from Accrington Stanley for £100,000

Things never went to plan for Fishwick at Cardiff following Hawkins' departure from the Cardiff City Stadium as he never managed to make an appearance for the Bluebirds
View attachment 123138

Next to join the club was another familiar face, Ceri Lacey, who's joined Wrexham on a two year deal following the expiration of his contract with Huddersfield

Lacey, 23, spent last season with Wrexham on loan from Huddersfield, who'd bought him from boyhood club Swansea for £1.4m just two season previously

The winger has racked up 86 career league appearances across a variety of league as well as 13 Wales Under 21 caps
View attachment 123136

Fourth to sign was youngster Shane Fletcher, who has joined Wrexham from Welsh Premier League club Newtown on a free transfer

Fletcher made his Newtown debut aged just 16 in March and went on to make three more for the club, bagging two assists and a Man of the Match award for the historic Welsh club
View attachment 123135

Last but not least is another left winger, Antonio, who's joined from Portuguese Second League side Beira-Mar

17 year old left winger Antonio already has a cap for Portugal Under 21s and is held in high regard in his homeland and hopes to impress during his time in Wales

ROBINS RAID CROATIA

View attachment 123084
Over the years, Matthew Hawkins has garnered a reputation for nurturing young talent, having spotted players such as Greig Boyle, Marco Angerschmid, Mitchell Grant and Jamie Parry (to name a few!) at young ages before turning them into world-beaters, so its no wonder that he has started looking for younger talent for his Wrexham team

To do this, Hawkins has turned his attentions to the Adriatic coastal nation of Croatia, the nation his four newest recruits called home before joining Wrexham

The most expensive Wrexham's Adriatic purchases was Adam Buchta, who's arrived at the club for the princely sum of £500,000

Buchta, 17, can play in midfield and just behind the striker and already has 2 caps for the Czech Republic Under 21 side. Buchta has joined the North Walian side from 30 time Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb

The next signing was a familiar name to Hawkins, David Krejci (No, not that one) arrived at the club for £180,000 from Dinamo Zagreb

Krejci, like Buchta is a Czech Republic Under 21 international, having made 2 appearances and scoring 1 goal for the side

Krejci can play in behind the striker and up front and looks a steal at £180,000

The next signing was that of Ivica Gabric from NK Lokomotive for £230,000

Gabric, unlike the previous duo, has no youth caps for his country but was still held in high enough regard by Hawkins and his scouts to sign at such a young

Gabric describes himself as a deep lying playmaker in the style of one of Hawkins' former players, Wales international and World Cup winner Adam Felgate

Last but not least is Ivan Celjak, who's joined the club from Croatian Second League side Sesvete for £40,500

Celjak, who can play on both the left wing and up front, has been capped by Croatia Under 20s and is held in high regard in his homeland

BBC Sport can confirm the transfer of Italian midfielder Fabio Faccin from the Racecourse Ground to the Stadio Olimpico following statements from both Wrexham and Italian giants AS Roma

The Italian Under 21 international has joined the Giallorossi for a fee believed to be £2.1m, one of the highest fees ever received by Wrexham

The deal has caused controversy however as it is believed that the Wrexham board went over the head of manager Matthew Hawkins when agreeing to sell, with sources detailing that Hawkins was busy negotiating with a deal with West Ham fr Faccin worth £2.5m with a 50% sell on clause when news came through that Faccin was on his way to Rome

Faccin joined Wrexham from Italian amateur side Renato Curi Angolana just a year ago and was believed to have a bright future ahead of him at the Racecourse

ROBINS SIGN CARDIFF DUO

View attachment 122998
Wrexham manager Matthew Hawkins took the trip down the A470 to his hometown of Cardiff and returned with two of his former players to bolster his squad. One on loan and one on a permanent deal.

First up, the permanent one. Wrexham have signed Welsh international goalkeeper Paul Llewelyn from Cardiff City for a fee of £160,000

Llewelyn, 22, had been on Hawkins' radar for some time, with Hawkins making enquiries about the goalkeeper from his first season in charge of Wrexham

The Cardiff born goalkeeper never made an appearance for Cardiff, instead making loan appearances for Bristol Rovers, Grimsby, Bury, Wolves and Reading

Giles, 21, has made 155 league appearances for Wrexham, scoring 70 goals across League 1, League 2 and the Championship

Giles has developed an affinity for the North Walian side, with the 7 time Wales international remarking that it is "his dream" to see the Robins play in the Premier League

Wrexham will be paying a percentage of his wages as well as a monthly fee
