With My Little Pick and Shovel - A Cardiff City Story

I always seem to get Brugge, Dnipro or both in my first couple of seasons in Europe. They've both proven tricky on their own patch, and I don't think I've ever got more than a draw against Dnipro.

A fairly quite summer transfer-wise as we let a few fringe players go and sign a few backups

DANNY INGS

Danny cost us peanuts, arriving from Liverpool for just £3.4m. We bought him after his second stint at Liverpool, who sold him to Watford in 2016 for £11m only to by him back 3 years and 20 goals later for £9.25m, transfer committees...

United decided they didn't like the fact we beat them in the FA Cup final and wanted to humiliate us, and humiliate us they did! An embarrassing defeat at Wembley as United ran riot, Darnell James made his Cardiff City début today

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE
Cardiff City 2-2 Liverpool
View attachment 1055286
Meret, Jedvaj, Ilori, Cooper, Davies, Rossiter, Bazoer, Green, Oliver (James 56), Brady, Avdijaj (Perovic 78)
Robbie Brady dug us out of a hole today with two superb strikes, equalising quickly after Liverpool took the lead through Daniel Sturridge and a Jake Cooper own goal, the loan player showed up miss-firing striker Donis Avdijaj today, who just couldn't hit the back of the net

We did quite well, in the second half that is. Arsenal won the game in the first half through goals from Alexis Sanchez and Andre Silva. We only had 35% possession but miraculously made more clear cut chances than the Gunners. Still a disappointing start to the season

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE
Cardiff City 2-0 Watford
View attachment 1055289
Meret, Jedvaj, Bazoer, Ilori, Nakagawa, Zielinski (Lascelles 62), Reed, Green, Oliver (James 62), Duelund, Avdijaj
A fairly comfortable victory over Watford although it took way too long to get the second goal. Andre Green got the first goal following a huge period of domination from us, Watford barely had a sniff all day

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE
Newcastle United 2-4 Cardiff City
View attachment 1055313
Meret, Jedvaj, Lascelles, Ilori, Nakagawa, Bazoer, Zielinski, Green, Oliver (Reed 74), Duelund (Brady 74), Avdijaj
What a game! We visited Tyneside looking for a draw against a strong Newcastle side. Donis Avdijaj scored his first of the season to put us 1-0 up, only for Ayoze Perez to equalise for Newcastle. Andre Green grabbed our second just after half-time only for Newcastle to peg us back immediately. Donis Avdijaj then gave us the lead and we were in cruise control for the rest of the match, with Andre Green sealing the victory with a stunner 4 minutes from time

LEAGUE CUP SECOND ROUND
Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Cardiff City

View attachment 148339
Meret, Jedvaj, Templeman, Lascelles, Brady, Rossiter, Reed, Cooke, James, Duelund, Boyle

What a strange game. A poor opening 30 minutes allowed Wycombe to take the lead through a Harrison Reed own goal, fortunately we rallied and dominated the game with Rhys Cook, Greig Boyle and Darnell James putting in top class performances

View attachment 148276
Meret, Jedvaj (Gunter 58), Bazoer, Ilori, Nakagawa, Rossiter, Zielinski, Duelund, Oliver, Brady, Avdijaj (Perovic 45)

A tight affair that looked as though it had swung Chelsea's way when Robbie Brady tripped Cesar Azpilicueta in the box, only for Alex Meret to make a fantastic save. Chelsea had a corner with ten minutes to go only for the ball to be cleared, allowing Dusan Perovic to run the pitch and beat Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois

Well. I have no idea what happened. Everton came out at 100mph and score 3 in 14 minutes, including two long range screamers. We responded through Daniel Zielinski, we should have scored a second minutes later through Jordan Rossiter. Mirallas sealed the victory for Everton in the 34th minute with a clinical effort. We rallied at the end with 2 goals in the last few minutes and deserved so much more than a loss

LEAGUE CUP FOURTH ROUND
Cardiff City 0-1 Burnley

17 ear old goalkeeper Andy Kyle marked his professional début with a man of the match performance against Burnley, despite conceding just 2 minutes in. We weren't at the races today but we did field a weakened team so it isn't surprising. Yusuke Nakagawa is out for 2 months with a dislocated shoulder

We started brightly and took the lead through Andre Green, unfortunately we couldn't hold on to the lead as Eriksen equalised just before half-time. Harry Kane scored the winner 13 minutes into the second half, disappointing.

West Ham United 1-1 Cardiff City

Meret, Gunter, Jedvaj, Ilori, Brady, Rossiter, Zielinski (Grant 63), Reed, Oliver (James 63), Perovic, Avdijaj

We went with 2 up today in a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 and were destroyed by West Ham, with the Hammers having 20 more shots than us. Oliver grabbed a lucky goal for us shortly into the second half only for West Ham to get a deserved equaliser in the last 10 minutes

The first time we've scored against Burnley iunder my stewardship, never mind beat them! The goal came from the unlikeliest source in Romanian left-back Silviu Ganea. Alex Meret was Man of the Match today with a 9.1 Match Rating, which surprised me seeing as we controlled the game

Derby County 1-2 Cardiff City

View attachment 148055

Fulham 3-2 Cardiff City

I don't know what to say. We really should have won this and the stats back this up, but two minutes of defensive madness cost us the three points. Very disappointing

We got off pretty lightly against a United side who have run riot this season (they still haven't lost). We even managed to take the lead before relinquishing it 10 minutes later, but like I said we got off pretty lightly in comparison to these results: Derby 8-0, Fulham 5-0, Everton, Arsenal, Liverpool 4-0.

A decent group featuring trips to Belgium, Romania and Ukraine, we'll have to be at our best to progress though as we venture into Europe for the first time since the nineties

A tough start to our European campaign as we travel to Dnipro to take on one of Ukraine's top teams. Fortunately our quality shined through as we managed to score two goals in the opening 30 minutes to lead at the break 2-1. Our defence shined in the second half, helping us to a 2-1 win.

Less goals but the same amount of excitement. We dominated the game but couldn't break Brugge down, fortunately Danny Ings arrived with a last minute goal to continue our unbeaten run in Europe and to all but secure our passage into the knockouts

We had many bids for 2 players - Tiago Ilori and Tin Jedvaj, we let one go...

View attachment 1055950
We said bye bye to Tin Jedvaj on the 22nd of January. I didn't really want to sell him as I felt he had the potential to become a legend at the club but his constant whining became to much and we were forced to sell him to Manchester City for £15m, £6m more than we bought him for. Tin made 53 appearances for us over 2 and a a half seasons but now sits on the bench at the Etihad
