Wrexham - All Welsh Affair

I just wanted a 10 minute break from work. Ended up being distracted for more then a hour and read the whole post. Cheers mate! Great job!

Cheers man, glad you have enjoyed the story so far!

Am finding myself playing through quite a bit of FM during this work from home life i must admit!

Are the wheels starting to come off?

After an impeccable November, which subsequently earned myself manager of the month for the first time in the Championship, signs are starting to emerge that this the playoffs may still be beyond are grasp.

Our form in December really started to dip, picking up just 4 points from 18. Yet we still find ourselves 5 points clear of Barnsley in 7th. The pack is starting to close in on us and with a lot of games still to go it may just prove too much. Regardless we are only 16 points off a record points tally for the club, a target we really should be hitting this season.

Screenshot 2021-02-03 at 17.31.33.jpg

David Garrett and Zac Wallis finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Welsh Young Player of the Year Award. They have been instrumental for us on the two wings so far this season and will hopefully be with us for quite some time yet.

Playoff Hopes Still Alive

A purple patch at the beginning of February has kept our chances of the playoffs alive as we recorded some big victories over fellow playoff hopefuls; Swansea and Palace.

We have a slender 3 point cushion with 10 games still to play. It's been a terrific season for us in the League and the chances of being in the playoffs at the end of the season is still very slim, but regardless this is bound to be our most successful season to date!

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.37.55.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.38.37.jpg

Mason Oakley came through the academy last season and has already been blooded into first team football. He does look to be an incredible prospect out on the LW and his goal against Nottingham Forrest makes him both Wrexham and the Championships youngest ever goal scorer!

I just need to make sure I don't allow a release clause in this guy's contract!

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.20.05.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.20.30.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.20.43.jpg

We confirmed the permanent signing of David Garnett who has been on loan with us for the past 18 months and also brought in another striker for a joint record fee of £1.4M

Screenshot 2021-02-04 at 22.55.37.jpg

I'm amazed Burnley let Garnett go for so cheap, he has great potential and has even been performing for me at International level. So £725k feels like a bit of a steal compared to other players valuations.

Screenshot 2021-02-03 at 17.41.54.jpg

Jack Richards is the £1.4M striker I decided to bring in. He has strong potential and very good finishing attributes already. He may be inexperienced and unproven but we have money in the bank and nobody else to really spend it on so thought I'd take a punt

Screenshot 2021-02-04 at 16.28.41.jpg

We also finally made it beyond the 3rd Round of the FA Cup, as we avoided a Premiership draw straight off the bat. So finally we have managed to bring in some additional revenue through competition prize money.

We travel to Stamford Bridge for our 5th Round tie and will likely be the end of the road for us. However, we have nothing to lose and here's hoping we can get a bit of luck on the day!

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 11.38.12.jpg

International Friendlies

We managed to salvage an extremely unlikely draw at Wembley thanks to a couple of late goals, after we were dominated for much of the game.

England are currently ranked 2nd in the World and it was always going to be a massive challenge for us, so to come away with a draw is a massive result for us despite being under siege for nearly the entire game.

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 16.56.30.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 16.56.08.jpg

We then had another challenging game as we travelled to Portugal to take on the current 7th best team in World football. The performance was actually much better than that against England but we still ended up losing 3-1. I wanted to challenge us against some strong teams to try sort out a more defensive tactic and although much work is still needed some positives for sure.

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 17.09.16.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 17.08.47.jpg

I'm quite a sentimental guy so decided to call Will Russ up to the Wales squad to face Portugal following an injury to Harry Wilson. He's been so good for us for so many seasons and felt he deserved to get an International Cap to his name.

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 17.10.13.jpg

The Euro 2028 Group Draw has also been made.

We should fancy ourselves to secure 2nd place and after playing pretty well in Portugal we may have a chance against them at a neutral venue.

Season Conclusion

We started the month with our 5th Round FA Cup trip to Stamford Bridge, which proved to be no shock result.

We were completely battered for 90 minutes and did well to only concede the 2 goals. Somehow we did edge the possession count but evidently couldn't do anything with the ball.

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 15.03.35.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 15.03.52.jpg

With the exception of our humiliating home defeat to Sheffield Utd, we've performed well in the League and with 2 games to go are still clinging on to the playoffs by a mere 2 points... Can we do it?

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.25.10.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.25.33.jpg

Despite taking the lead twice against Barnsley we fail to come away with all 3 points. Barnsley were probably the better side across the entire 90 minutes so a point actually didn't seem too bad, but having led twice it still feels a bit like 2 points lost.

1 game to go.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.36.05.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.36.44.jpg

We record our 3rd consecutive draw and unfortunately miss out on the playoffs on goal difference. Swansea managed to make a late surge into the playoffs and scored a late winner to book their place and edge us out in the process.

Whilst it has been a terrific season for us, it's gutting to miss out on the playoffs in the final game of the season! Realistically we wouldn't have made it through the playoffs anyway but we can always dream.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.52.48.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.52.59.jpg

Nothing notable on this seasons youth intake unfortunately...

Screenshot 2021-02-05 at 15.38.46.jpg

Annual revenue has been increased across the board with the exception of broadcasting. Finally we brought in some competition prize money which is a nice change.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.54.30.jpg
Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.54.49.jpg

This seasons best XI

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.55.10.jpg

I decided to pump our revenue into improving facilities as we look to bolster our reputation.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 23.15.24.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 23.16.37.jpg

Confirmation of our best ever finish this season. It's going to be hard to top this next season but we'll certainly give it a go.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 23.46.38.jpg

Unlucky on missing out on the playoffs, not worth going through the heartbreak of losing in the final anyway... Hopefully there are some decent players that want to join you this summer

Pre-Euro 2028 Friendlies

So here is the 23 man squad I have decided to take with me to Italy to play in the Euro 2028.

A squad that includes 3 Wrexham players; Ben Cabango, David Garnett and Lewis Webb.

We have a pretty decent starting XI but the squad does get a bit thin in talent in some areas, although the good news is most players are under 31 so have the potential to be around for the next Euros, although will be hoping some budding new regens will have emerged by then.

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 12.57.35.jpg

Our first friendly was against Scotland, in which we walked away as comfortable victors. The scoreline probably did flatter us a bit but we took our chances and limited them to speculative long range efforts. A good start.

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 13.07.34.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 13.06.37.jpg

Croatia are ranked 13th in the World so was bound to be a more challenging game, which we were ultimately undone on a set piece. Playing at home I was disappointed to not create a bit more and at least draw the game but areas have been highlighted to work on.

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 22.19.49.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 22.20.16.jpg

I have no idea how we didn't manage to record a win in our final friendly against Turkey. We created chances and with an xG of nearly 3 you would have expected at least 1 goal for us. I'm just thankful it was only a friendly as this would be an infuriating result in the actual tournament.

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 22.34.22.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 22.34.39.jpg

We now travel to Italy for our 3 group games....

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 09.31.47.jpg

Euro 2028

Although I'm supposed to currently be working the draw of managing at the Euros has unashamedly lured me in....

A dramatic 3-3 draw against Portugal has done nothing to curb my enthusiasm!

We performed so much better than the Friendly we had against them earlier in the year and arguably were the better side. We had to come from behind 3 times in the game, but Harry Wilson bundled home an 87th minute equaliser to earn an unlikely point.

A very promising start to our Euro 2028 campaign.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 09.48.11.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 09.48.29.jpg

I'd identified Bosnia & Herzegovina to be the weakest side in our group and therefore a must win game. They are a big physical side (apparently 5kg per person heavier according to the below report) but lack quality in certain areas.

Fortunately we absolutely blitzed them in the first half and raced into a 4-0 lead at the break. Inevitably our intensity dropped off a bit in the second half with the result in the bag, but a very pleasing display.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.17.12.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.18.02.jpg

We therefore sit top of the table on goal difference with our final game to go.

A draw would confirm qualification, but a win would very likely top us the group with our goal difference.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.18.35.jpg

Ireland knew they needed to get a win to have any chance of progression and really took the game to us. We really struggled to cope with the numbers they were throwing forwards and they will feel mighty unfortunate to lose the game.

Fortunately we managed to convert our chances when we had them as we were second best in nearly every department bar the scoreline.

Delighted to win but not a pleasing performance!

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.39.35.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.38.55.jpg

Confirmation of us topping the group!

Bosnia & Herzegovina pulled off a shock victory over Portugal to finish second, but Portugal do progress as one of the best 3rd placed sides.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.40.46.jpg

Topping the table means a fixture against Switzerland, avoiding Belgium and Spain which is who we'd have been playing had we finished 2nd or 3rd.

We are very evenly ranked and should be a close fixture... Can we reach the Quarter-Finals.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.41.13.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.40.58.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.01.42.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.00.49.jpg

I have absolutely no idea what I just witnessed....This may well do down as the most entertaining game in Euro history!

We were 4-0 down at half time. Dead and buried.

We fought back to 4-2, but an immediate response from the Swiss to make it 5-2 surely but our valiant fightback attempt to bed.

However, we go on to score 4 unanswered goals including the winner in 93rd minute to send us through to the Quarter-Finals!

I was ready to smash my laptop in frustration at half-time, but we have just produced the comeback of all comebacks, blitzing the record for goals in a match in the process..... might be a bit early to start drinking on a Monday lunch time, but feel like i need one after that.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 11.59.43.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.00.35.jpg

Next up we have Holland... Have we got anything left to give after that last game

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.12.06.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.00.02.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.15.11.jpg

Unfortunately we simply ran out of steam in front of goal, having previously scored 16 goals in 4 games.

We competed hard and created some of the better chances in the game but just couldn't find the back of the net.

Reaching the quarter-finals is still a massive achievement for us and have etched our name in history with that victory over Switzerland.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.22.19.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.23.06.jpg

Croatia beat Holland in the Euro 2028 Final.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.56.36.jpg

Matondo picks up the Best Player of the tournament along with the Golden Boot, to cap an incredible individual tournament for our star winger.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.56.58.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 12.57.24.jpg

I should probably do some actual work now....

You must have done one heck of a half time team talk in that Switzerland game - 6 second half goals!!

Quarter-Finals is a good achievement though and looks like you were unlucky not to at least push extra-time against Holland.

Proving Tough to Beat

So back to life with Wrexham and firstly a transfer roundup....

Our major piece of transfer activity was the signing of
Lance Davies from Pompey for a new club record fee of £3.1 Million.

He has become a regular in my Welsh National side and has great Leadership credentials at the age of just 22 and immediately becomes our VC and inevitably future Captain. We needed to bolster our midfield and am hoping he will be a man to take us to the next level and push for the playoffs once again.

Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 22.43.12.jpg

Our only other transfer was Glyn Freestone-Jardine who joins us from Fulham for £1.9 Million. We haven't really produced any decent CB regens and is a position I wanted to have a young prospect emerging. He looks to be a decent prospect and whilst he isn't quite ready for first team football will be getting some game time.

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.38.17.jpg

So here is the squad for this season at the end of the transfer window....

I'm very happy with our starting XI and have some fairly decent backups now so am feeling fairly optimistic about the season. Just need to avoid injuries!

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.27.12.jpg

As we start our 5th season in the Championship we finally move off bottom spot in wage expenditure as we slowly start to attract higher profile names to the club. Still miles off the top teams though..

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.25.23.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.25.38.jpg

After 6 games in the League we remain unbeaten but have only won the 1 game. Whilst it has been a good start to the season all things considered I'm a little frustrated we haven't managed to take all 3 points in some of those matches.

Hopefully we can kick on a bit now.

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.46.44.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.46.58.jpg

Norwich ended our EFL Cup campaign in the second round as we still await an exciting cup run.

Screenshot 2021-02-09 at 22.39.26.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-09 at 22.39.37.jpg

We continue to gradually climb our way up through the domestic rankings, but still sit as one of the bottom Championship sides despite 4 strong campaigns.

We have overtaken Cardiff and have Swansea in our sites as we look to become the highest ranked Welsh side.

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.43.42.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-08 at 10.44.48.jpg

The Youth facilities are now at an excellent standard and the training facilities upgrade is nearly completed.

Financially we have taken a bit of a hammering with our upgrades and transfer activity and our balances will likely be in the red before too long.

Screenshot 2021-02-09 at 22.59.29.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.26.33.jpg

Still Unbeaten...

Things really seem to be coming together for us this season as we remain unbeaten in the League 14 games into the season!

We did draw 7 consecutive games, but have since kicked on and notched up 5 wins in the last 6 games. Our new signings seem to be settling in well and some of our young prospects are developing into very good players.

Will this finally be the season we can reach the playoffs and potentially a route to the premier League?

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 22.24.35.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 22.24.53.jpg

Taking a quick glance at the stats prove how established we have become in the Championship and a real contender for promotion.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 22.44.52.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 22.45.22.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 22.45.35.jpg

We also have the best coaching staff in the Division, topping the charts in every department.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 11.45.41.jpg

Coming along nicely! There's no way you're using just Welsh staff as well are you? I was thinking of getting all Dutch staff in my save for a bit but that would just be ridiculous haha

Coming along nicely! There's no way you're using just Welsh staff as well are you? I was thinking of getting all Dutch staff in my save for a bit but that would just be ridiculous haha

No, definitely not all Welsh Staff! haha. I have had the below Welsh Assistant manager for 6 years though, but he is 1 of about 4 Welsh staff at the club.

I did think about having all Welsh staff at the start as well but realistically it wasn't going to happen.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 11.55.09.jpg

UEFA Nations League A

Our maiden voyage in the Nations League is against 3 of the Worlds top international sides.

Screenshot 2021-02-06 at 22.26.15.jpg

Our first game was scintillating 3-3 draw against Germany after we fought back from 2-0 down. We did take the lead and an unlikely 3 points seemed possible but it wasn't meant to be unfortunately. In truth they were the better side so a draw is still a very good outcome for us and an early point on the board.

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.24.29.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 12.24.45.jpg

Our trip to Belgium didn't go quite as smoothly as we were hammered by 4-1. Arguably we were the better side and created the better chances (including a missed penalty) but they were clinical in front of goal and we were duly punished. A pleasing performance but a very disappointing result.

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 13.31.17.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-10 at 13.32.04.jpg

Italy become the latest side to get the better of us and subject us to another defeat. It was another close game and the 2-0 scoreline is rather harsh on us but it was always going to be a tricky affair and clinical finishing gets the better of us once again.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 12.45.27.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 12.44.58.jpg

Two of our Wrexham boys combine to get us a much needed 3 points as Lance Davies sets up David Garnett to give us the 1-0 victory. It's the least we deserved after our last meeting and confirmation that we can compete with the elite sides.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 12.57.21.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 12.57.34.jpg

So with just 2 games to go we sit 3rd in the League in what is proving to be a very close battle against relegation.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 12.57.53.jpg

Harry Wilson managed to secure us a very important point in our penultimate game following an incredible penalty save from our Wrexham goalkeeper, Lewis Webb. Germany were the better side but i'm not complaining with this result.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.08.19.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.09.01.jpg

We need to secure a victory over Italy to guarantee our survival in League A.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.09.15.jpg

We didn't get off to the best of starts, but we managed to turn the game on its head and record a massive victory over Italy and secure our place in Nations League A!

It's another big scalp for us to take on the International stage and reason for optimism for this Welsh side moving forwards.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.19.33.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.20.22.jpg

Confirmation of the final League table.

Screenshot 2021-02-11 at 23.20.45.jpg

The FIFA World Cup qualification draw has also been made and whilst Denmark could prove difficult we should be favourites to top the group and qualify for the 2030 World Cup.

Screenshot 2021-02-12 at 10.52.08.jpg

Still in the hunt for Promotion

We kick start November with 3 more victories to extend our unbeaten run to 17 games in the Championship!

Screenshot 2021-02-12 at 22.44.38.jpg

Unfortunately we then slumped to back to back away defeats against 2 sides that were relegated from the Premiership last season.

We were incredibly unlucky against West Ham, conceding an Injury time goal. Then against Derby we were fully in the game before the red card and still pushing for the equaliser before getting caught out with 2 very late goals to make the scoreline seem rather harsh on us.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.27.00.jpg
Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.27.16.jpg

Following those 2 defeats we have responded by going on a 10 game unbeaten run to keep us fully in the hunt for promotion. I'm really not sure how everything is starting to click for us this season but I'm not going to complain and hopefully we can keep it up to the end of the season and potentially secure a spot in the Premiership next season.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.36.47.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.37.24.jpg

Our next 3 games are home fixtures against the other 3 sides in the Top 4....

This could really be a defining point in our season and am hoping Home advantage will prove vital.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 16.09.22.jpg

After beating Pompey in the 3rd Round we got what should have been a very easy draw against League Two opposition Stevenage, but a heavily rotated side struggled to get the job done and so we'll need to get it done in the replay.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.46.16.jpg

Training facilities have been completed and things are starting to look really good off the pitch.

David Garnett picks up Welsh Young Player of the Year

Screenshot 2021-02-12 at 22.59.41.jpg

Heading Down to the Wire

We kick off the first of our 3 crucial home games against our nearest promotion contenders with a massive victory over Welsh Rivals, Swansea. Despite conceding an early goal we bounced back to score 4 unanswered goals and take a massive step towards the playoffs and potentially a top 2 finish.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.59.53.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.59.00.jpg
Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 21.58.49.jpg

We followed that up with another victory over Reading in a game. We dominated the game, created numerous chances and really should have been out of sight at the final whistle but was definitely a bit of squeaky *** time at the end!

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 22.58.26.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 22.57.33.jpg
Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 22.57.23.jpg

We took a 2-0 lead over QPR but conceded 2 second half goals in the space of 3 minutes and really had to hang on for the point. It's yet another draw, but ends a 3 game spell in which we took 7 points against our 3 closest rivals.

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 23.10.51.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 23.09.49.jpg
Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 23.09.39.jpg

Unbelievably we have still only lost 2 games in 40 matches this season, drawing an incredible 17 times. Ideally we would have taken the 3 points in some of those games but regardless we have all but secured a playoff finish and still in the battle for the Championship and an automatic promotion spot.

With just 6 games to go can we hold on? Don't think we can afford to draw too many more now though.

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 20.35.32.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 20.35.44.jpg

Even in the replay we struggled to overcome Stevenage.

Despite having our best season to date, we need 210 minutes to get past League Two opposition!

Screenshot 2021-02-14 at 22.13.51.jpg

We were seconds away from taking Spurs to a shootout in the FA Cup 5th Round after we proved that we have what it takes to challenge Premier League opposition. It's a shame we couldn't get to the lottery of the shootout but we can now fully focus on trying to make it to the promised land of the Premier League!

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 11.38.44.jpg

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 11.39.50.jpg

We are now officially regarded as an established Championship side, 4 years ahead of schedule. Although it's a season in which we may well go beyond the Championship.

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 10.44.58.jpg

Unsurprisingly the board were keen to tie me down and offered me a new 3.5 year deal which I gladly accepted.

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 13.51.04.jpg

Another disappointing year with the academy, with no standout prospects. I doubt any will make a first team appearance for the club.

Screenshot 2021-02-15 at 13.43.50.jpg

Exellent story mate! Just read from start to finish and my only regret is not starting reading sooner. Best of luck!

Are we heading to the Premier League?

We record some big crucial victories over West Ham and Derby, the only 2 sides to have beaten us this season in the reverse fixtures! We also managed to scrape a victory over relegated MK Dons which proved to be a much tougher game than I had anticipated.

Screenshot 2021-02-16 at 09.20.07.jpg

Blackburn have been matching us stride for stride and are looming just a point behind us as the battle for the Top 3 really starts to heat up.

We could still win the Championship, secure an automatic promotion spot or have to battle it out in the Playoffs....

Next up we have Blackburn away, this really could be the deciding game in our season.

Blackburn become just the 3rd team to beat us this season, but have dealt a massive blow to our automatic promotion hopes in the process, leapfrogging us in the table.

Whilst we 2 home games against struggling sides, our destiny is now out of our hands and even if we win both games it may not be enough....

Blackburn slip up in the Friday night fixture against Brentford, whilst we get the job done against Pompey to put us back into 2nd place by a goal difference of +1. The dream is still alive!

Meanwhile QPR's massive victory over MK Dons secure them the title.

The final game of the season has Blackburn away to the Champions, QPR. Whilst we host bottom of the table Peterborough, a side which had relegation confirmed weeks ago. Surely that is advantage us, as long as QPR don't take their foot of the pedal now that they have won the Championship...

So at the half-time whistle we are heading to the Premier League!

QPR are 2-0 up and we are in control against Peterborough..... surely we cant mess this up!

Fortunately we didn't and we are heading to the PREMIER LEAGUE!

Will Russ bagged a brace to secure us the win, whilst QPR won 3-1 over Blackburn.

It did feel like this was going to be our year, but after that Blackburn defeat I had my doubts, but here we are heading to the promised land!
