Liverpool sack Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has been sacked by Liverpool's owners after reports of a rift within the squad. John Henry said that he was very disappointed it didn't work out for the Northern Irishman and hoped that he could find success elsewhere. Early suggestions are that Roberto Di Matteo is favourite the land the job, but Laurent Blanc, Martin O'Neill and Manuel Pelligrini are also being touted as potential candidates.

Liverpool appoint Jones
Liverpool have shocked the country by appointing unknown manager Tom Jones to take charge of the Reds. Jones has issued a statement saying he is delighted to be given such a high responsibility. Jones was just last year cheering the Reds on from the stands, yet now, his impressive knowledge of the club has given him an opportunity that he wouldn't have expected to be given. Jones has also promised to make use of Liverpool's strong youth academy, and is expected to meet up with the team on their summer tour.

Liverpool suffer dreadful pre-season
Jones opted to let Colin Pascoe take charge of pre-season while he made tactical plans. This proved to be a disastrous decision, as Liverpool lost both their pre-season matches. Firstly they lost 2-1 to Cherno more in Bulgaria, despite an early Steven Gerrard penalty. Then over in Canada, Daniel Agger's header was the only consolation in a 4-1 defeat to Vancouver. Meanwhile Jones has discovered he will not have a transfer budget this summer, and will need to fund any transfers through selling current players. It is unclear who Jones wants to leave the club, but thoughts are Stewart Downing may be on his way out of Anfield. Jones will begin his Premier League career with a trip to Carrow Road, and will manage his first match in Merseyside against West Brom. Jones' first real test will come at home to Manchester City in mid-September. His first Merseyside derby will come at the end of November, while he will come up against Manchester United two weeks later. On Boxing Day, Fulham will travel to Anfield, while Southampton will make the trip up north to end the season.

Liverpool to face Vitesse
The draw for the Europa League 3rd qualifying round means that Liverpool face a trip to the Netherlands. Vitesse beat Bohemians 5-0 in the last round, but Liverpool are favourites to advance. The first leg will be played in Holland, meaning the decisive second leg will be played in Merseyside. Meanwhile Tottenham have emerged as shock contenders to sign Stewart Downing, but Liverpool aren't keen to let him leave on loan, and would rather he left permanently.

August Review

Europa League
Vitesse 1 - 1 Liverpool (Sturridge)

Sturridge's early goal on his debut gave Liverpool the best possible start before Janssen equalised for the hosts. Vitesse were the better side for much of the match but the Reds left themselves in a good position for the second leg. Allen, Assaidi and Coutinho also made debuts, while Jordan Ibe became Liverpool's youngest ever player.

Liverpool 1 (Henderson) - Vitesse 1 (p)

Liverpool dominated but fell behind early on to Heerkes. Henderson equalised with a great finish and Borini had a great chance for a winner in the 90th minute. Eventually the match went to penalties, where Gerrard and Enrique crucially missed to give Vitesse a win.

Premier League

Norwich 1 - 0 Liverpool

A shock result saw 10-man Norwich scrape a win past an again dominant Liverpool. Daniel Agger's 79th minute own goal proved to be the winner.

Liverpool 0 - 1 West Brom

Gerrard failed to convert a penalty before half time, and unbelievably, Agger scored a second own goal in a row to gift the visitors a win.

Summary
Shocking month all round, the finishing has been dreadful. Morale is very low in the squad, and the fans are already unhappy.

Player of the month - Glen Johnson

No one stood out particularly, but Johnson had good games in the league, and assisted Sturridge's first goal of the season.

League Position

16th

Other

Downing moved on loan to West Brom on deadline day, while Liverpool drew Blackpool away in the Capital One Cup. In other transfer news, Thomas Muller joined Man City for £36 million, joining Sandro as their big transfers, Fellani signed for Tottenham and Cabaye joined Man United. In early Premier League results, a Chamakh winner stunned Man Utd at Upton Park, the North London derby finished 0-0 and Aston Villa won at Goodison Park.

Premier League

Liverpool 2 - 1 Wigan

McCarthur gave the Lactics the lead, before a swift Suarez equaliser. It was Coutinho who sealed victory with an 80th minute winner. This was the first win of the season for Liverpool.

Liverpool 1 - 2 Manchester City

Carragher gave Liverpool an early lead with his first goal since 2009. Liverpool's great opening nearly saw Borini double their lead, but an Aguero double gave the champions a win to continue their good early form.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Liverpool

It took Hazard two minutes to give the London team the lead, and after that, Liverpool were marginally the better team. Despite this, the visitors lost their fourth game of the season.

Newcastle 0 - 1 Liverpool

Liverpool got their first win on their road courtesy of a late Fabio Borini penalty. Lucas and Johnson suffered injuries in this match.

Capital One Cup

Blackpool 0 - 1 Liverpool

Coutinho scored his second Liverpool goal to send the defending champions through, despite an unconvincing display at Bloomfield Road.

Summary

Much better month, although should have done a lot better after going ahead against City. The away win against Newcastle was particularly impressive given their early season form.

Player of the Month - Coutinho

2 goals and an assist opened the Brazilian's Liverpool career in style. Coutinho proved to be a crucial part of the side's attacking build up.

League Position

14th

Other

West Brom were the early leaders in the Premier League, with five wins and one draw. West Ham were surprisingly 3rd in the table, while Reading managed to reach the top half. Downing scored in a 2-0 away win against City, while Manchester City won 2-0 at home to Chelsea. Pogbrenyak and Chamakh emerged as early top scorers, with 6 goals each.

Premier League

Liverpool 2 - 2 Arsenal

Koscielny gave Arsenal an early lead, but Skrtel equalised from a corner soon. Giroud capitalised on Reina's poor pass to Johnson, and scored a close range finish. Coutinho equalised with a stunning goal 64 minutes in. A left footed piledriver left Fabianski helpless. Suarez came close to a winner after 80 minutes, but his free kick was saved.

Liverpool 1 - 1 Stoke

Coates' header put Liverpool ahead, but a controversial penalty two minutes later was converted by Jonathan Walters. Gerrard suffered a serious injury in this match, and will be out for two-three months.

Swansea 1 - 1 Liverpool

Suarez thought he had sealed victory with a strike with four minutes remaining, but Michu cruelly equalised with 2 seconds remaining

Capital One Cup

Liverpool 0 - 0 Newcastle

Suarez recieved a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Coloccini one minute from full time in normal time. Steven Taylor was also sent off in extra time for a second yellow card. The match eventually went to penalties, which Liverpool won thanks to Tiote's miss and Sterling's conversion.

Summary
Unbeaten this month, although no outright wins is worrying. Job seriously under pressure.

League Position
12th

Player of the Month - Philippe Coutinho
Developing into a top playmaker, and is doing fantastically in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

Other
City, Reading, United and Arsenal made up the top four, while Newcastle found themselves in the relegation zone after a good start. Holt and Adebayor joined Chamakh and Pogrebnyak as top scorers. Reading beat United 2-0 while Southampton had a stunning 4-4 match against QPR. United beat Tottenham 4-1, while Arsenal drew 1-1 with Chelsea.

Fair play, that new tactic worked brilliantly. Won 3-2 at Goodison Park.
