What you might be doing is going on the senior squad then on the filter selecting for the reserve squad to be shown as well? If so, i think you have to click on the actual player than you want to register from the reserve squad and move him to the senior squad

I thought the work ball into box restricted your players from taking long shots, so yeah they would have to be closer to goal before shooting. Resulting in more accurate and on target shots.
