"Villa fans in delight, as transfer rumours end in Steven Defour signing for the Villains"

After drawn-out speculation and rumours of a Premier League move for him, Steven Defour has ended all of it, following his £12million transfer from Belgian outfit Standard Liege yesterday. The young playmaker, touted as the replacement to Bulgarian club captain Stilyan Petrov, is now in the running to make his formal debut for the club in the league, with Villa's next match being a hosting of title contenders Manchester United - funnily, Steven Defour was linked before with a move to United, is a fan of them and had expressed his interest in moving to the Manchester club.

But now that he has signed for Aston Villa, his starts alongside the likes of Nigel Reo-Coker, Steve Sidwell and Stephen Ireland when Petrov is absent will give Defour the chance to show his potential and skill level and why Villa spent £12million in getting him. Touted for French football before with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Lyon and possibly Sochaux, the capture of Defour will definately delight Villa fans. The 21-year-old, who has been capped by the Belgian U21's and national teams respectively, will take the no. 10 shirt in the replacement on John Carew, who left the Midlands for Italian outfit Genoa, in a controversial move that saw him continually show interest in moving away.

"Ferguson adds Ninis to the ranks at United on before-final day of August"

In what will most definitely be the last transfer for Manchester United in the August transfer window this season, veteraned Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has confirmed the signing of young prospectful Sotiris Ninis to Manchester United on a 3-year-deal stretching to the end of the 2011-12 season. Ninis, who now-formerly plays for Panathinaikos, was bought by the Red Devils for £5.25million on the before-final day of the transfer window to add some youth into a side that has the average age of 29. Ferguson, who's United have struggled in the starting games of the season, will look to their next match in the league with a chance to entertain Roberto di Matteo's West Bromwich Albion at home and grab the all-important three points.

Ninis was handed the #35 shirt for Manchester United but it is very much doubtful that the internationally-capped 19-year-old will make his debut against yo-yo team West Brom, but rather during the midst of the season, where points are not as important as they are now for Manchester United. Ninis is also the second transfer deal for Man Utd this season, with Bosnian hitman Edin Dzeko being the earlier, transferring from German outift VfL Wolfsburg for £26.5million on a 4-year-deal back in July and currently holding the record for the biggest signing in this year's August transfer window.

How long do you think you can keep this going for! XD

Brilliant!

would you be able to post the premierleague results so far and the league table ??

Carling Cup Second Round Round-Up
Part 2

The second part to the second round of the Carling Cup, attributed with all the scores and reviews of the matches from this update by the BBC. The formations, line-ups, goals and teams will all be reviewed - next.

"SWP's fantastic performance down the right contributes to Man City's comfortable win over Watford"

picture.php

Watford 0-3 Manchester City

David Silva (11)
Danny Graham (O.G., 39)
Emmanuel Adebayor (91)

The times of which City scored the goals may suggest a different kind of match but the Citizens' domination against lowly Championship side Watford justified the reason why Chelsea should be fighting hard to defend their beloved Premier League crown this season. Manchester City's domination in the centre of the park, with the constant threat of ex-Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on their backs made it all the more harder for Watford to defend comfortably.

Deploying the 4-2-1-3 once again, Mancini's decision to give Joe Hart a rest and Shay Given a chance to prove his experience is invaluable to City's title chances this season came as not much of a surprise to the City fans. Jerome Boateng and Wayne Bridge made their first appearances in the Carling Cup for Man City this season whilst Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure partnered in defence. Patrick Vieira made his partnership with fellow African midfielder Yaya Toure, whose earlier transfer from Barcelona in the summer allowed City to poach him and Gareth Barry to play ahead of the two as a playmaker.

New-boy David Silva was shifted to the left flank as the £26.5million ex-Valencia man makes his first-ever appearance in the Carling Cup for his new club and the surprise entry of Shaun Wright-Phillips surfaced some claims that this would be the perfect opportunity for the 27-year-old London born winger to prove his worth and become a much bigger asset down the right-hand side than now ex-Aston Villa player James Milner. Carlos Tevez, once again, played ahead of the pack and leading the frontline as the lone forward but, knowing him, he will drop deep into the midfield and create a false nine amongst his team-mates and create a deadly attack.

The first ten minutes started with quick pace, as a determined City continually pushed the Hornets into their own half and pressing them with intent. Multiple chances via the flanks arose and Tevez, Silva and Shaun Wright-Phillips the casualties of those. It wasn't until the eleventh minute that an in-swinging corner by SW-P that fell to David Silva and to tap home City's first goal of the game. A well-assisted cross by the England international, as Silva scored his first domestic goal in the shirt of the Citizens.

Watford had their chances, including one on the break that resulted in City giving away a cheap free-kick, only for ex-Burnley left back Jon Harley to scuff the set-piece and let off the Citizens unscathed. That came back to bite them, when American centre half Jay DeMerit's conceding in a free-kick allowed Wayne Bridge to step up and take the set-piece, taking a huge deflection off young and prospectful England keeper Scott Loach and into the back of the net. Despite it being a horrible mistake for Danny Graham, the person who conceded the goal, Bridge celebrated it with full confidence and intent like it wasn't an own goal.

Just before half time, DeMerit got his comeuppance, when a foul on one of the City players resulting in the referee brandishing a yellow from his pocket to put the 29-year-old on thin-ice, having to watch his tackles carefully and not endanger his chances of being sent off. Another followed-suit, this time being given to Gareth Barry, and the third to another Watford player, this time, Jon Harley.

And with City 2-0 up and looking good, in-stepped Togolese hitman Emmanuel Adebayor, whose towering presence at the front of the attacking line resulted in it being the icing on top of the cake, with the second assist of the game Wright-Phillips allowing Adebayor acres of space to nip past Adebayor and slot it home for the third, giving City the all-important qualification to the next round of the Carling Cup.

"Boselli's late injury scare has potential to clear room for Jason Scotland at the frontline"

picture.php

Rochdale 0-3 Wigan Athletic

Charles N'Zogbia (3)
Hugo Rodallega (9, 81)

One of Wigan's newest assets Mauro Boselli's late injury, ironically in injury-time, gave the Wigan fans a fright, despite their comfortable win over League One side Rochalde at the Spotland, with a close-to-a-10,000 capacity attendance to attribute the comforting win. Colombian forward Hugo Rodallega's double, topped with a very early goal from Chalres N'Zogbia was all the more helpful but, what still rivvets in the mind of Wigan fans is the potential of one of their star strikers, Mauro Boselli's injury in the 91st minute of the game, being injured, leaving ex-Swansea man Jason Scotland on the list to replace the Italian forward.

Martinez's op for the 4-2-4, giving Mauro Boselli a role on the wing, surprised many. Boselli, who was purchased from fellow Argentinian side Estudiantes, played down the right wing as Victor Moses was rested and Charles N'Zogbia playing in the usual left winger role. Youngsters Ben Watson and James McCarthy made up a two-man central midfield, whilst Cho Won-Hee, Gary Caldwell, Steve Gohouri and Maynor Figueroa featured in Wigan's back four. Chris Kirkland remained the man between the sticks for the Latics.

Not unusually, the game got off to a good start of attacking football for the more-favoured side and quite rightly so, when a fantastic lobbed pass upfield by James McCarthy sent N'Zogbia on his bike to score his first Carling Cup goal of the season for Wigan, putting it past Frank Fielding for 1-0. The second, with passing play between Cho Won-Hee and Ben Watson, led to McCarthy getting into space and putting in a ground pass for Rodallega to smash it home, despite ricocheting off the post and in for two goals to the Latics.

During the second half, N'Zogbia and Gohouri fell victim to the referee's yellow cards but inside the last ten minutes of the game, the quick-and-dangerous Rodallega popped out once again to score his second goal of the game and wrap up the victory, when great fluid play once again via Wigan allowed McCarthy to whip a ball over the top to fall to Rodagella's feet, bearing down goal, to calmly, put in the third.

"Brisbane Road a mourning ground for the Orient fans, as their city rivals knock them out of the Carling Cup with a vengeance and Dembele proving his worth to Hughes"

picture.php

Leyton Orient 1-5 Fulham

Jason Demetriou (12)

Andy Johnson (1)
Moussa Dembele (7)
Paul Konchesky (17, 69)
Leon Osman (21)

Moussa Dembele's performance upfront for Fulham in the 5-1 demolition of League One outfit Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road justified the reasons why the young striker was purchased for such a hefty price. His play upfront, partnered with injury-ravaged striker Andy Johnson, both made an impact for Fulham and impressed Hughes with their interplay and quick passing to make the goals and contribute to a fitting scoreline.

In a 4-4-2 formation, Johnson and Dembele were able to play as the two frontmen as Bobby Zamora was put on the bench. Paul Konchesky though, played in a more attacking role for once, with the ex-West Ham fullback playing on the left-side of the midfield while new signing Vegard Forren was the left back. As the central midfielders, Michael Johnson and Jonathan Greening were to create a strong and organised midfield and have Everton loanee Leon Osman being the right winger. John Panstil, Brede Hangeland and Philippe Senderos made up the defence.

Fulham definately didn't want to play a defensive game and they showed it as within the first 16 seconds of the game, Johnson netted the first goal of the game to stun the Leyton faithful, but also amaze the travelling Fulham supporters. Johnson, who formerly played for Crystal Palace and Everton, was ravaged by injury that kept him out of the side that was able to go on to the Europa League final, only to lose to Atletico Madrid and the hot-on-fire Diego Forlan.

It wasn't long before a lofted ball from Ghanaian defender John Pantsil set Dembele on his way for 2-0 and double the Cottagers' lead within the first ten minutes. The O'***** back though, with a ball set up from 25-year-old French striker Jonathan Tehoue, leading up to Cypriot international Jason Demetriou's goal from just inside the 18-yard box to claw it back for 2-1. But it became 3-1 when a quickly taken free-kick by Michael Johnson, on loan from Manchester City, allowed passes between Jonathan Greening and Moussa Dembele, to set up a goal for Paul Konchesky to celebrate, leaving boss Mark Hughes delighted with his choice to play Konchesky down the left flank.

The fifth and final goal of the first half was a far-post cross delivered by once again, Dembele, whose selfless acts in the match allowed on loan winger Leon Osman to head home for 4-1 and put the team in an unassailable lead at the break. All done in just over 20 minutes. A relaxing lead and a scoreline to show, Fulham were not going to put up the barricades just yet.

Deep into the second half where back-and-fourth play between the two sides left to several chances, the majority of them being from Fulham but other good ones by Leyton Orient, allowed Paul Konchesky to score an unexpected second goal, whereby the attacking fullback's indirect free-kick was pushed away, only for, once again, John Pantsil, to lay it off to Konchesky, leading up for a rush into the box and smash the ball into the keeper's hands and ricochet into the back of the net, leaving the travelling fans ecstatic and half the stadium empty.

A fantastic performance by Fulham has given them confidence for their next match in the Premier League against Chelsea at home on Saturday, as their bid to make it into Europe once more becomes a dream ebbing away.

Carling Cup Second Round Round-Up

Part 3

The third part to the second round of action up and down the country from the Carling Cup and how Premier League teams faired against Championship and lower clubs.

"Insua amongst the scorers in comfortable second half dominance, 3-1 win for Birmingham at the Ricoh Arena"

picture.php

Coventry City 1-3 Birmingham City

David Bell (41)
Sebastian Larsson (54)
Emiliano Insua (pen. 81)
Nikola Zigic (93)

It wasn't until the second half that Birmingham really started to show business, as McLeish's men had to go into the last ten minutes to grab two important goals that would put them into the next round of the Carling Cup. The introduction of Emiliano Insua at left-back was to allow the Argentine the ability to show his talents and determination to be a mainstay figure in the Brum back four for the duration of his loan.

Coventry took the lead during the first half when, four minutes before the interval, David Bell was able to sound out the away fans, with some great passing on the part of City across Birmingham's defence allowed Joachim Standfest to launch a through ball over the top to find the winger and put the ball past an unsuspecting Foster for 1-0.

Defensive play from Coventry in the second half was not to do much when it came to the 54th minute, where passing play between Cameron Jerome and Nikola Zigic found the open Sebastian Larsson, who drew it level. With less than ten minutes left of the match, Lee Carsley was the culprit of a fow inside the area, where it was Emiliano Insua to step up to the plate. Protests to the referee did not stand, and Coventry was made to suffer. 2-1 Birmingham.

Coventry were close to equalising the game for 2-2, but a well-defended cross that nearly landed to Jonathan Stead posed a quick conter-attack and a huge kick upfield fell to Sebastian Larsson, darting down the right wing to find the partially-injured Nikola Zigic in a rebound off goalkeeper Kevin Davies, whose parrying away of the ball was costly and ended the game 3-1 to the Premier League side. City knock out City.

"Andwele Slory proves his worth, Barnsley battered 4-0"

picture.php

West Bromwich Albion 4-0 Barnsley

Graham Dorrans (7)
Andwele Slory (35, 44, pen. 61)

A hat-trick on his cup debut for West Brom, Dutch winger Andwele Slory scored three goals to sink a lacklustre Championship outfit in Barnsley, as the Hawthorns witnessed a great performance on the part of their newest acquisition. Slory, who joined on a free from Dutch league contenders Feyenoord, joins the Premier League contingent in their battle to survive the drop and maintain their top-flight status, in the reign of ex-Chelsea star, Roberto di Matteo.

A cross from Slory that fell to Scottish midfielder Graham Dorrans kicked off the scoring, as Marek Cech was the provider. Back and fourth action in Barnsley's territory then gifted the ball back to West Brom and their defence was able to launch the ball into the path of Slory once again for him to double the lead and get himself on the score sheet. It didn't stop there, trickery from the Surinam descendant dazzled the Terriers' backline, and a shot into the far corner of the net got the Baggies fans singing again.

As half-time went by, a penalty shout on a tripped Graham Dorrans forced referee Carl Boyeson to point to the 12-yard spot, as the 39-year old took no protests to heart. Slory stepped up and slotted with ease and got his third goal to cap off a wonderful debut by the 26-year old and send WBA into the next round with good timing.

"Rovers scrape it by the skin of their teeth, Vincenzo Grella thanked by Ewood Park faithful"

picture.php

Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Crystal Palace

Vincenzo Grella (16)

Fighting spirit from the travelling Londoners in Crystal Palace and their fans cannot be put down, but the result flatters the neutral. An early goal from Australian midfielder Vincenzo Grella is the only event in the match that seperated a mid-table side from a struggling Championship side, as the Ewood Park faithful nearly witnessed an embarrassing draw. Although Blackburn pushed hard, it was only to get the first goal that they started to pull back and defend in numbers.

A run from El-Hadji Diouf started the play, getting to the byline, only to pull it back for Brett Emerton and then, unselfishly, passed it to a nearer team-mate in Grella, who struck it from just inside the area and beat Julian Speroni and gift Blackburn their first goal in the competition this season. Palace fought back defiantly, with attacking pace from both wings in Neil Danns and their newest signing, Belgian youngster, Nacer Chadli, but it was the defensive work and organisation of the Rovers back four that kept out an otherwise deserving Crystal Palace.

1-0 it finished.

"Possession domination and a quickfire double inside the first ten minutes, Sunderland cruise at the Stadium of Light"

Darren Bent (4, 65)
Urby Emanuelson (pen. 7)

It was easy to see that Sunderland enjoyed this game at the Stadium of Light, as right from the off, Darren Bent and Urby Emanuelson scored inside the first ten minutes to gift the Black Cats a two goal lead and then a third past the hour. Darren Bent, who joined from Tottenham Hotspur in a £10million deal, will be looking to make a mark in the Tyne for the red side of the north and become a huge asset in their frontline.

Play between Matthew Kilgallon and Keiran Richardson allowed Darren Bent to tuck one in from less than ten yards out and then a penalty given by referee Clive Penton handed Emanuelson, the £5million signing from Ajax, to net his first-ever goal in an English cup competition from the penalty spot. Huge dominance in possession torwards the end of the half showed that Steve Bruce and Co. were in business.

Then, a grave mistake between Southend United's defenders, who passed the ball back to goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall, that was the pinpoint part of the mistake that gave Bent the opportunity to pounce and loft the ball over the goalkeeper and put the game out of reach.

"Carlton Cole saves the day, Green own goal nearly knocks out the Hammers"

picture.php

West Ham United 2-1 Southampton (in extra time)

Robert Green (og. 97)
Carlton Cole (108)
Benni McCarthy (115)

After no goals were scored in a dreary 0-0 in a normal 90 minute match, extra time commenced with a bang, and boy did it nearly knock West Ham United out. Since the Hammers were unable to score during normal time, it was the ability to then score during extra time, where an added thirty minutes and penalties would decide who would go through.

Several minutes into the first half of extra time, a corner for Southampton ended in disaster, as Robert Green conceded an own goal to hand the League 1 side the lead and put them 1-0 up. Jeers and chants from the Southampton supporters rung round the stadium, and Green hung his head in despair.

After fifteen minutes of extra time, Southampton only needed to hang on another fifteen to win the match and progress to the third round. This wasn't to be. West Ham pressed and pressed on the attack, with flourish and power with McCarthy and Cole trying to get their fair share of headers. Three minutes in, an equaliser was struck. Benni McCarthy pulled the ball back from the byline to pass back to left-back Herita Ilunga, who crossed for a towering header to meet the head of Carlton Cole. 1-1.

Then, in the 115th minute, McCarthy was once again involved, as Ilunga picked out the South African, only to be put into a dogfight with corresponding defenders, only to strike from outside the area and make it 2-1. Game over. Five minutes to go but West Ham defended well and they were through. Not a convincing performance, but a good one nevertheless and they were safe. Not bad for Avram Grant either.

WOW.

I can only imagine how long that took you. Amazing stuff Nick.

10/10.
