2014 World Cup thread

What a pointless match having a third-place playoff is absolutely stupid... honestly just a money grabbing scheme for Fifa.

Not really that's how Croatia felt in 1998. It's a big deal, finishing 3rd in the world cup is really a big deal.

It's about time they did away with it. It's the game no one wants to play in and players sure don't care if they finish 3-4 in a World Cup after missing out on the big one. Worse than a meaningless friendly.

Debatable. It all depends on your expectations. In a country that already broke into the final before, like the Dutch, or won it in the past, like Brazil, it probably feels meaningless. For everybody else, its a big deal. I guarantee you everyone here in Poland still thinks our two 3rd places, in 70s and 80s, are a ******* big deal. My old man told me about these games and I'll probably pass the stories to my kids, unless we somehow win the World Cup in next 20 years, which I doubt.

Frankly whining about simply having to play the game, is extremely disrespectful to the other 20+ teams in the tournament who would kill to make it just to the semis. If they don't like it so much, they don't have to show up.

I'd go cuckoo if USA came in 4th place. Good opportunity for Brazil and Netherlands to give youngsters a world cup appearance.

Scolari is really a tool ... He just oversaw an utter humiliation of his team on the world stage and he still has the balls to come out snarling in his press conferences and defending his record saying how he shouldn't leave. Even Hodgson would have apologised and resigned!
This is why our football( I am brazilian, by the way) its is this situation. It was amazing to see how he describe this humillating victory of Germany, AN ACCIDENT,REALLY, Brazian coaches think that they dont really need to learn with people from another countries like Pep Guardiola

Well, I've had to cope without the internet for a short while and been forced to endure the World Cup commentary on TV (radio passed away aswell :'( ) and my god-I can't remember a time when I've wanted to eat my own face so bad. Simply dire.

Speaking of dire-some of the officiating in this tournament has been absolutely perplexing to say the least. Some incredibly odd refereeing going on-and some of it blatant Homer Simpson. Though I'd also say some of it is also down to FIFA. They obviously wanted the games to flow and have the number of cards reduced. But still. There is a limit. And I won't forget that Brazil capitulation for a long, long time or the French performance.

Though I will say the highs are pwning the lows in this tournament. There's been so many highlights. RVP goal, Rodriguez goal against Uruguay, Tim Cahill goal. Watching the "underdogs" playing. Been an absolute joy to watch them, and made this such an exhilarating tournament to watch. Some of the footballing talent on display this time round has been truly wonderful to see. I hope the final matches the hype I really really do.

And for the record-I'm going for a Germany win.

I see your point but I have spoken to players that have played in it in the past and all they wanted to do was to get home. They missed out on getting to the final and they do not want to stay on for the game that is like a wake. The only reason they play it is because of Fifa rules. If they did not turn up then Fifa would punish them. Believe me not alot of players want to play in it. It might be a big deal for fans of the respected lower nations that got that far but for players it is not.

Nesta-level tackle right there.

Apparently Mascherano dislocated or pulled (don't know the word) his **** with this tackle...

Hansi Flick says Germany have got a "special plan" for dealing with Messi. Breaking his legs?

[h=3]Van Gaal: Match is irrelevant[/h]
Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is clearly not a fan of the third-place play-off. The incoming Manchester United manager says todays match is an irrelevance he could do without.

He said: "There is only one award that counts and that is becoming world champions.
"The worst thing is that there is a chance you are going to lose twice in a row.
"And in a tournament in which you have played so marvellously well you go home as a loser."

He does have a point... it's just a money-grabbing scheme for Fifa, totally pointless match.

Only pointless match for a team if you lose it. Good chance to leave tournament with a win.

Will anyone celebrate becoming 3rd? Unless you're Arsene Wenger. Harharhar! (Well it's actually 4th but still).

Who's talking about celebrating? Players are playing for their countries and finishing 3rd is a good achievement especially for the Dutch. Also Brazil players will want to finish the tournament on relative high after the Germany game.

I just don't like it... playing for a 3rd place no one will remember, you play to win the World Cup, if you don't then you're a loser like everyone else. No one will remember in the future... oh yes they finished 3rd!

Imagine having a 3rd place in the Champions League? It's the same logic.

As I have quoted before. When I have done some media work that the players I have spoken to they do not want to play in it regardless what fans think. They just want to go home after missing out on a World Cup Final.

It's a biggest sporting event in the world. It's for the neutrals also who want to see as many games as possible. I know I for sure want to see the game tonight. If people don't like it maybe dont watch it and only watch the final?

And yes I'd also watch 3rd place match for CL. More games I get to see the better.
