2014 World Cup thread

I'm going to be the Fred apologist here and point out that he's actually a very effective striker. Remember his Confederations Cup showing? In 2013 he was averaging nearly a goal a game. Just so happens that since then he's been almost constantly injured and has been thrust into the team despite being unfit because Brazil have basically no other true strikers.

What about Diego Costa?.......oh hang on

I really hope Brazil have got some strikers that actually move coming through the ranks.

Not sure what's with the Scolari hate. People seem to forget what incredible mess Brazil was when he took over. He fixed the squad enough to get them to the semis, but you can only punch above your weight for so long. Brazil have great history but ultimately its average squad that lost two key players. The expectations for them to win were always unrealistic. Nobody has ever won the World Cup without world class striker, with shaky has-been goalkeeper and central midfield thats only good at fouling.

They were incredibly lucky to get to the semi's anyways so it's not like Scolari pulled off a miracle. Right from the group stages, they struggled against good sides. They got help from the referee to beat Croatia. Managed only a tame draw with Mexico. Spanked Cameroon who were even a greater mess than them

In the knockout stages, required penalties to beat Chile who absolutely screwed it up. Used horrible tactics to beat Colombia and got plenty of help from the referee in that game too. Not in one game did they actually look convincing and this massacre was on the cards. It would have been horrible to see them lift the trophy this way: riding their luck, using idiotic tactics and getting help from the referee

Scolari pretty much screwed things up right from squad selection. He completely ignored good players like Filipe Luis, Coutinho and Rafinha. He also never put out a proper team on the pitch. Why weren't Ramires and Paulinho starting today? As soon as they came on at half-time, Brazil looked so much more lively and better

So?

The same applies to every team in the semi-finals. Argentina has been **** poor entire tournament. The Dutch needed last minute miracle to beat Mexico and then had to wait until pens to beat Costarica. Germans barely made it past ******* Algeria

Good on him, the players he selected on those positions are better.

You mean as soon as Germans stopped bothering. And thank **** Ramires wasn't there from the start, he would probably lose his **** in the first half, get a dumb red card and we'd be looking at 15-1 score instead.

Brazil will get through this mess. I would be suprised to see Fred who is actually the poorest striker Brazil have ever picked to be seen in a Brazil shirt again. Hulk is a close second. I really hope Brazil have some youngsters to replace those two.

David Luiz. How on earth does he claim such a big transfer fee. Apart from his free kick in the quarters he has had a lapse in concentration in virtually every match and is often seen out of position.

Julio Cesar. Apart from penalty heroics there is a reason why only QPR wanted him. Enough said.

It is a sad affair to see Brazil humbled like that. I guess now they will have their enquiry into how it went so wrong. Germany did it after Euro 2000 and have now put themselves as favourites for this World Cup.

1. Except no team has been consistently poor like Brazil. Each of the semi-finalists had good games here and there that actually made them look like they are worthy of being World Champions. Brazil have been consistently poor from start till the end. The only reason they have gotten so far is because they rode their luck massively and got key decisions in their favour from the refs

2. Not at all, Filipe Luis is the best FB Brazil have. Coutinho would probably do a better job than ******* Bernhard

3. Maybe. Maybe not ... All I am saying is that Brazil looked much better when he came on along with Paulinho

As much as Brazil need a new striker, I fully expect Kruse and Volland to get more game time for Germany. I was surprised when both got cut from the squad. Klose will be 38 by the time the Euros come round, so surely they won't still be relying on him.

That will be it for Klose now he has the record. Although the way Muller is going he could well be next to take it.

Which match of Argentina are you thinking about?
They haven't really impressed me. It's just because ofthe hype of Messi that people think they're worthy to be world champions imo.

Same could of been said about 1986. Yet they still went on to win. To win the World Cup does not mean you have to play with flair and excitement. It's about getting enough done to win games.

if Brazil doesn't win this WC, riots will break out, and it will be mayhem. This whole tournament will be in danger if they don't reach the finals and win it.

Still waiting for this to happen. No reports of a true riot only trolls on Twitter posting pictures of last year claiming it was after last nights game.

Sky reported that there was looting and some small scale stuff in sao paolo last night but nothing major. I think if it is going to happen at all it will be tonight or before the 3rd place playoff.

I believe that chap has earned that hype more than any other player with what he has achieved in football in the modern game.

Ye, he does earn the hype because of the performances he did last few years, but not because of his performance this year. Also i was pointing out that I don't think Argentina had a exciting match yet this tournament, unlike germany or holland, who were the other semi-finalists.

I don't know why people are so critical of Fred, he did his defensive work and stopped the likes of Neuer and Hummels from scoring ;)
On a serious note, I will be seriously surprised if ozil plays in the final. He is lucky that everybody is concentration on how bad Brazil were as he was one of the worst performers on the pitch IMO. I know he was amazing in the last two tournaments but he isn't cutting it this year.

He is in the top 3 for creating the most chances in the World Cup this year... He may have not been at his best of a few years ago, but he is still getting unfair criticism IMO

He's average in terms of brazilian strikers but then again the whole team is.
