Premier League predictions: Lawro v Jay-Z

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on American rapper, record producer, enterpreneur and Arsenal fan Shawn Corey Carter, known by his stage name Jay-Z. He is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists in America. In 2012, Forbes estimated his net worth at nearly 500 million dollars. He has sold more than 75 million records while receiving 17 Grammy Awards for his musical work. Jay-Z also founded the sports agency Roc Nation Sports and is a certified NBA and MLB sports agent. He married American R&B singer Beyonce in 2008. They have a daughter named Blue Ivy Carter.

Lawro vs Arsenal fan Jay-Z

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Swansea - Newcastle
Jay-Z: This one should be easy for the Magpies. 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: The Swans could deliver an upset at home. 2-2.

Manchester City - Manchester United
Jay-Z: The Citizens might just edge this one. 2-1.
Mark Lawrenson: This is simply unpredictable and I will say draw. 1-1.

Chelsea - Aston Villa
Jay-Z: Chelsea will win this one. 3-1.
Mark Lawrenson: I also think the Blues won't have any trouble at home. 2-0.

Derby County - Blackburn
Jay-Z: Easy game for Rovers. 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I actually believe Rovers might struggle to win this one. 0-0.

Arsenal - Stoke
Jay-Z: We haven't been at our best recently but this is a must-win game. 3-1.
Mark Lawrenson: I don't think the Gunners are favorites here despite having home advantage, especially on the back of a terrible Europa League performance. 1-2.

Last week, Lawro got two results right, with no perfect scores. His score of 2 was not good enough to match the predictions of Chelsea fan Will Ferrell, who scored 4, managing four correct results with no perfect scores.

Gary Lineker: Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day for our thoughts on the 2016/17 Premier League season! It seems the race will be as tight as ever this time around and as we all know it is those direct 6-pointer clashes that play a decisive part in deciding who will fly and who will fall. For this reason we will be focusing solely on those giant games in Match of the Day. Stay with us as Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer aid me on analyzing the key aspects of what happened and why it happened for you!

Manchester City - Manchester United
3-2
View attachment 402532

Gary Lineker: The second Manchester derby saw the usual roles switched as it was United striving to keep pace with leaders Newcastle at the top while the Citizens were already out of the title fight but pretty much in a struggle to keep their top four status with Blackburn just a point behind them in the table. And it was Man City who took the game by the throat, pulling three up front in the first half after Aguero bagged a brace and Ronaldo added another from the spot. The Red Devils were determined not to let it go despite the negative first half and clawed two back through Kagawa and Icardi but the final twenty minutes didn't produce another goal and it ended with a very important home win.
Alan Hansen: It was a game of two halves - Man City totally dominated the first one and deserved their lead but Man United found their way back in it when it seemed a lost cause. At some point it appeared an unlikely comeback might have been on the cards but it never materialized as the home team rediscovered their grip of the game and held possession well enough to push the visitors out of contention for an equalizer.
Alan Shearer: Aguero was the deserved PoM award winner but I was impressed with Modric and Grimaldo for their slick passing in the final third and of course Neuer for pulling a few important saves when Man United were on fire. De Gea was also impressive as he produced seven saves, some of them world class. Kagawa had a great impact after coming off the bench in the second half but Eriksen and especially Kyle Walker were simply terrible.
Gary Lineker: This result sees Man United slide six points behind Newcastle and they also lost their second position after Chelsea jumped above them in the table. The Citizens solidified their fourth position and are now just three points behind their local rivals but let's not forget Man United still have a game in hand - although both Chelsea and Newcastle are in the same boat.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v Michelle

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on English actress and Manchester City fan Michelle Keegan, who is best known for playing Tina McIntyre in the soap opera Coronation Street from 2008 to 2014. She attended St Patrick's RC High School in Salford, and later the Manchester School of Acting. Keegan worked at Selfridges in the Trafford Centre shopping mall and as a check-in agent at Manchester Airport. She went out with Hollyoaks and Emmerdale actor Anthony Quinlan from 2006 to 2008 and the model Brad Howard from 2008 until 2010. She was engaged to The Wanted's Max George after meeting him at one of their concerts in December 2010. They broke up in mid-2012. She began dating Mark Wright in December 2012. On 9 September 2013, it was confirmed the two were engaged. She has dated, engaged and broke up with a dozen other models, actors and musicians over the past two years.

Lawro vs Manchester City fan Michelle Keegan

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

West Ham - Newcastle
Michelle Keegan: I can see a surprise here. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: This is as easy as it gets for the Magpies as West Ham have been terrible and became the first relegated team lately. 0-5.

Stoke - Manchester City
Michelle Keegan: We should win this easily, really, who are Stoke? 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I don't think the Citizens can afford a mistake here, and they are way too good for Stoke. 1-3.

Blackburn - Nottingham Forest
Michelle Keegan: I'll back Rovers. 2-1.
Mark Lawrenson: I don't think Forest will win this and am inclined to predict a draw. 1-1.

Manchester United - Southampton
Michelle Keegan: Man United can't win if we're going to catch up with them. 1-2.
Mark Lawrenson: Emotions aside, the Red Devils will murder them. 4-2.

Everton - Chelsea
Michelle Keegan: Away win, easy to see. 1-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I also think the Blues will take this. 0-2.

Hull - Arsenal
Michelle Keegan: The Gunners should win. 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I'll side with Hull in this one. 2-1.

Last week, Lawro got one result right, with no perfect scores. His score of 1 was too poor for the predictions of Arsenal fan Jay-Z, who scored 7, managing five correct results with one perfect score.

The Contenders:

Newcastle (1st; 89pts; +73) - the Magpies picked up 12 points this month and managed to extend their lead at the top to six with just three games to play!
Player of the month: Eder Alvarez Balanta - 7.84

1 Current first team injury:
Paul Pogba - 2-5 days (groin strain)

Chelsea
(3rd; 81pts; +54) - the Blues picked up 10 points this month and defending the title is only a mathematical possibility for the current champions now - although they need to be careful as top four isn't confirmed yet.
Player of the month: Mats Hummels - 7.50
4 Current first team injuries:
Neymar - 1-2 days (pulled hamstring)
Eden Hazard - 1 day (torn hamstring)
Oscar - 2-5 weeks (broken lower leg)
Juan Mata - 3-4 days (stubbed toe)

Manchester City (4th; 80pts; +67) - the Citizens picked up 11 points this month which means they are officially out of the title race but they have it all to play for as Rovers are very close on their backs in the race for top four!
Player of the month: Sergio Aguero - 7.58
0 Current first team injuries.

Blackburn
(5th; 79pts; +55) - Rovers picked up 12 points this month and keep Champions League qualification hopes alive with Man City just one point above them and Chelsea two, although the Blues also have a game in hand.

Tottenham (8th) - Spurs remain in the same position and qualification for Europe is pretty much in sight if they can pip Leeds and Arsenal to climb one position in the table although they do need results to go their way.

Derby County, Bolton and West Ham occupy the bottom three for the second month in a row - the former two are still just a win away from safety but the Hammers have been confirmed as the first team to go down this season.

Blackburn - Newcastle
1-3
View attachment 402464

Gary Lineker: This early fixture saw top-four chasing Blackburn meet title-focused Newcastle who needed just four points from their remaining three games to secure the trophy. Rovers were a point behind Man City with 2 games to go for both teams and needed something although it was the Magpies who took the lead when Suarez scored just before half time. Robben equalized for Rovers after the break but the home team joy was short lived as Balotelli quickly restored the lead for the league leaders. Suarez then wrapped it up with his second of the night with less than 20 minutes to go. There were no more goals and Newcastle took a massive step towards winning their third title in the last four seasons!
Alan Hansen: As a matter of fact I thought Rovers did very well to remain in contention until the second Newcastle goal as it wasn't going their way. The visiting team were simply better and it was only the extra desire and tackling performance from Rovers that left it undecided for so long. The equalizer spurred Newcastle to action though and they switched up a gear which the hosts simply couldn't match.
Alan Shearer: Robben was the best Rovers player but Carvajal, Kroos and especially Trindade de Vilhena didn't put the kind of performance we'd expect from them and they know it. Balotelli and Suarez were pure class for Newcastle, the latter claiming the PoM award, and Varane and Zouma did very well in defense.
Gary Lineker: This result pretty much puts Blackburn out of the running for top four unless Chelsea or Man City collapse in a spectacular fashion. Newcastle are now touching the title and will grab it if they manage to earn a single point in any of their final two games.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v sir Frank

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on the founder and team principal of the Williams F1 Formula One racing team and Tottenham fan sir Francis Williams. A car accident in March 1986 in France resulted in Williams sustaining a spinal cord injury and becoming tetraplegic. While driving a rental Ford Sierra car to Nice airport, Williams lost control of the vehicle which then rolled over causing him to be pressed between his seat and the roof resulting in a spinal fracture between the 4th and 5th vertebra. Since the accident he has used a wheelchair. Williams was knighted in 1999.

Aston Villa - Manchester City
Frank Williams: The Citizens will win this easily - 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: The only question is how many goals will Man City score. 0-4.

Everton - Arsenal
Frank Williams: This one is also going to the home side. 2-0.
Mark Lawrenson: I doubt the Gunners will make a mistake in Liverpool. 1-3.

Manchester United - Nottingham Forest
Frank Williams: The Red Devils should win this in a routine manner - 3-0.
Mark Lawrenson: I don't fancy this for a surprise, Man United will win. 5-0.

Manchester United - Chelsea
4-1
View attachment 402317

Gary Lineker: Manchester United was the only team still able to catch Newcastle in the title fight but the Red Devils needed to defeat Chelsea at Old Trafford and see the Magpies lose at home to Southampton just to have a mathematical chance. The Blues had a fight of their own as victory would have confirmed Champions League qualification and they edged a step closer to it just after two minutes when Neymar gave them the lead. The Red Devils had to wait until the half hour mark to get an equalizer as Icardi calmly executed a penalty kick. Icardi then gave the hosts the lead for the first time in the match just before half time. But he wasn't done and went on to complete a hattrick in the second half, before Hamsik sealed the final score - Manchester United 4, Chelsea 1.
Alan Hansen: It was a great game to watch with both teams wanting the win. Chelsea were impressive in the first half hour right up to the penalty decision and it is understandable Mourinho was fuming with the call after the game as it turned it around. The difference between the two teams was the finishing though - there were 5 clear cut chances for each but Chelsea missed theirs while Man United put nearly everything in the net. I'd say the more composed team won as the Blues were constantly looking to interrupt any patch of fluent play with repetitive fouls and piled up quite a few yellow cards.
Alan Shearer: I can't look past Icardi for the PoM award but the likes of Hamsik, Iniesta, Fellaini and Smalling were great, too. Ramires was the disappointment of the night for Chelsea.
Gary Lineker: Despite the triumph of offensive football it was heartbreak for both teams with the full time whistle as Newcastle clawed an amazing three goal comeback with ten men to salvage a late draw versus Southampton and edge four points clear of Man United with just one game left - which sealed the Premier League title! Chelsea remain fourth but will need to win their last game to stay above Blackburn in the race for Champions League football.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v King James

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on American professional basketball player and Liverpool fan LeBron Raymone James. King James played the small forward and power forward positions for the Miami Heat of the NBA. James has won two NBA championships, four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, two NBA Finals MVP Awards, two Olympic gold medals, and NBA scoring title and the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. He has also been selected to ten NBA All-Star teams, nine All-NBA teams and is the Cleveland Cavaliers' all-time leading scorer. His career achievements and leadership role during Miami's 2012 and 2013 championship runs have led many basketball analysts to consider him the best player in the NBA today.

Dave Jones has been fired by West Ham President David Sullivan. In failing to avoid relegation, Jones' future became uncertain and the club will move forward with a new manager in charge. The former Sheffield Wednesday employee had been manager at West Ham since May 2015. West Ham were relegated from the English Premier League after failing to win any of their last ten games.

Relegation costs Dave Jones' West Ham job

Sunderland manager Dougie Freedman is currently odds-on favourite to be offered the job, although nothing has yet been heard from the Sunderland camp. West Ham officials are refusing to comment but speculation suggests that Owen Coyle, Mark Hughes and Martin O'Neill could also be in the mix.

Odds for next West Ham manager:
5-2 Dougie Freedman (Sunderland)
5-1 Owen Coyle (Wigan)
6-1 Mark Hughes (unemployed)

Odds for next manager to get the sack:
Evens Brendan Rodgers (Bolton)
Evens Mauricio Pochettino (Southampton)
10-1 Paul Lambert (Aston Villa)

Brendan Rodgers has been fired by Bolton Wanderers President Karl Gray. Rodgers' departure is thought to have been triggered by the club's poor league position, forcing the Trotters into a decision. The former Crystal Palace employee had been manager at Bolton since July 2016. Bolton were relegated this season with very little separating them from Nottingham Forest who retained their Premier League status.

Speculation as to Rodgers' successor at Reebok Stadium is rife, with Watford manager Gianfranco Zola being touted by the media as the favourite to get the nod. Roberto Di Matteo, Paul Ince and Mark Hughes have also been linked with the position.
