You have the option of leaving it up to your manager, but in the editor when making a team you can set a preferred formation, so this may as well be used. You only say the formation, not the players you want in the line-up.
 
I think I've built a well rounded squad, so I'll leave mine blank and make the gaffer earn his paycheck
