Raul Meireles stunning strike with time running out was the catalyst for this victory.

Chelsea put the defeat at Arsenal behind them as they left it late to see off Wolves. Chelsea went down to ten men when Ivanovic saw red late on, but it simply proved to be the catalyst for victory, with Raul Meireles striking home, before Drogba slotted the winner past Hennessey.

It was a nervy first half performance from Chelsea, who were looking to get past their first defeat under the new management. Things looked to be going badly early on when Fernando Torres had to be stretchered off after just 5 minutes with a suspected leg injury. Anelka came on as his replacement, and looked sharp creating a number of openings, but Hennessey was equal to the majority of them.

The main talking point for Chelsea was that Frank Lampard was left out of the starting XI, with Ramires coming in to his place in the team. He was unable to carve out any openings, and so was the unusually quiet Juan Mata.

In the second half, Juan Mata made way for Frank Lampard as Chelsea pushed for victory. They created a number of chances in the second half but could not get any luck. Drogba crashed a beautifully curled free-kick against the crossbar before David Luiz's flicked header from a corner clipped the bar.

And Chelsea's frustrations mounted when Branislav Ivanovic saw a second yellow despite Karl Henry escaping for a similar incident moments before. Blood was boiling in the Chelsea camp, but things were eased moments later when Raul Meireles struck a crisp half-volley from Bosingwa's pass straight into the roof of the net.

The fans had barely sat down again when Drogba doubled the advantage, collecting Lampard's neat pass before slotting home at the near post past a helpless Hennessey. A good 3 points in the end, with plenty of talking points.

Illyroy said:
"In the end it's a good 3 points which we can be happy with because on the balance of play, we thoroughly deserved the win.
'I was slightly dissapointed with the decision to give Ivanovic the red card especially because of the foul by Karl Henry moments before on Lampard who was also on a yellow. Consistency is the main issue in refereeing at the moment, and we've been backhanded here.
'Fernando's injury isn't as bad as first feared and he shouldn't miss any games. Didier Drogba picked up a knock on the other hand and he will be out for 2-3 weeks."

Chelsea:
Cech, Ivanovic, Cole, Terry, David Luiz, Romeu (Bosingwa 73), Ramires, Meireles, Mata (Lampard 66), Drogba, Torres (Anelka 8)
Unused subs: Turnbull, Malouda, Lukaku, Alex

Wolves:
Hennessey, Zubar, Johnson, Berra, Ward, Jarvis, Milijas (Vokes 72), Henry, O'Hara, Hunt, Doyle
Unused subs: de Vries, Elokobi, Stearman, Hammill, Doherty, Iorfa

GABRIEL AGBONLAHOR
Gabriel-Agbonlahor-Aston-Villa-Profile_2651562.jpg

Gabby has started the season in great form for Villa, and despite the absence of strike partner Darren Bent, he will certainly be a handful for the Chelsea centre backs. Exceptional pace and an improving technical ability, he certainly has the attributes to cause problems this afternoon.

MATCH NEWS
Chelsea will be without Jose Bosingwa for the next 3 games after he was injured on international duty. Didier Drogba is also a doubt after a knock picked up against Wolves. Fernando Torres returns to action, as does Josh McEachran but Michael Essien remains a long term injury. John Obi Mikel sits out the last of his three match ban this afternoon, while Branislav Ivanovic will also miss out after picking up two yellows against Wolves.

For Aston Villa, Brad Guzan, Jean Il Makoun, Stephen Ireland and Ciaran Clark will all be sitting out the game with injuries, whilst Darren Bent remains a doubt with a knee injury.

MATCH PREVIEW

Chelsea got a vital win last time out against Wolves and will be looking to prove their mettle against Aston Villa this afternoon. The loss of Drogba is a big one, but with Daniel Sturridge returning, it could be a chance for the youngster to prove his worth.
Aston Villa have started the season well, with 2 wins out of 3 having beaten both Wolves and West Brom. This is a real test of their abilities though and Alex McLeish will be aware that as the home team, they will be under pressure to cause an upset.
The manager talked about the game ahead, the international matches from last week and an undisclosed bid for youngster Josh McEachran:

Illyroy said:
"Certainly it's annoying for us because we are now without Jose Bosingwa for the next 3 games, and he has been performing well at the moment. But I understand totally the international situation and it's something a manager simply has to come to grips with.
"We have had a bid for Josh McEachran which I shan't disclose. Needless to say it has been firmly rejected; Josh is a major part of this clubs future and we intend to keep him here for the long term.
"As for the game today, we are well aware of the pace that Aston Villa have and that's a place they will try to cause us problems. We'll be changing our shape a bit with the loss of Drogba and I expect Danny to make his first start of the season."

Chelseas-Daniel-Sturridge-005.jpg

Sturridge's goal killed off Aston Villa's resistance

.Chelsea came away from Villa Park with a victory that was largely down to Aston Villa's inability to defend set pieces. Villa scored an own goal just before half-time which changed the game, and goals from Daniel Sturridge and Paulo Ferreira after the break frustrated the home side.
Chelsea started slowly, and it was Villa that were making the chances. Emile Heskey up front was holding the ball up well and creating space for N'Zogbia and Agbonlahor to charge through. Agbonlahor in particular was finding space on the left, but all too often his final ball wasn't good enough.Jack Collison struck the bar with a curling effort from 25-yards, and Cech produced some fine stops to deny the Villa forwards but they could not make any headway.

Chelsea were causing numerous problems on the counter-attack, with pacy front trio Torres, Sturridge and Mata breaking away at will. And it was a Sturridge run that made the first goal, breaking away and forcing a corner out of Given. The ball was whipped in by Raul Meireles and tucked into his own net by Richard Dunne.

Unfortunate, definitely but Chelsea went in with the lead. And it was doubled right after half time when David Luiz's throw on was flicked by Paulo Ferreira to Danny Sturridge who took a touch before blasting home.Just 4 minutes later, Villa were kicking themselves again as David Luiz's long throw found Paulo Ferreira in space, who took a touch and buried just his 3rd goal for the club. 3-0 might have been harsh in terms of possession, but Chelsea were making the better chances.

Villa struggled to motivate themselves for the last half an hour, and Chelsea were content to play out a very impressive victory. Great counter-attacking football and set piece play led to these 3 points today.

Illyroy said:
"It was a great performance, they did exactly what I asked of them. We felt that we could let Villa play at us because that would stop our backline being stretched by their pace. It worked for us and instead we caused their defence problems on the break and it was to our credit."Danny was brilliant coming back from suspension and he'll be featuring in the future. Paulo came in and did a great job so it gives me a headache when Branna and Jose come back into the team."

Chelsea:
Cech, Ferreira, Cole, Terry, David Luiz, Romeu, Lampard (Ramires 72), Meireles, Mata (Malouda 88), Torres (Anelka 75), Sturridge
Unused subs: Turnbull, Bertrand, Kalou, Alex

Goalscorers:
Dunne o.g. (36), Sturridge (52), Ferreira (56)

Aston Villa:
Given, Hutton (Beye 60), Dunne, Collins, Aldrete (Warnock 60), Petrov, Collison, Agbonlahor, N'Zogbia (Albrighton 60), Jenas, Heskey
Unused subs: Siegrist, Cuellar, Delfouneso, Williams

MATCH NEWS

Oriol Romeu and Paulo Ferreira are unregistered and will not feature in this game. Didier Drogba has returned to training, but is doubtful to play, whilst Michael Essien is a long term absentee.

MATCH PREVIEW

Chelsea have started well in the Premier League, and sit 2nd after 4 matches. Their first Champions League game should not see them caused to many problems, but they will have to guard against complacency. The Czech champions score a lot of goals, and Chelsea will be tested defensively.

Illyroy said:
"We're looking forward to the game. I think we'll be resting a few players with the Manchester City game to come next weekend so Josh may get his first start of the campaign.
"This is a competition we want to win so we will be taking it very seriously. The team that goes out there will do their best to achieve victory."

John-Terry-Chelsea-away-shirt_2670051.jpg

John Terry scored the winner to give Chelsea their first three points of the campaign.

Chelsea cruised to victory this afternoon with a weakened side. Manager Illyroy chose to rest several key players but it was two senior performers who scored the goals. Nicolas Anelka scored his first of the campaign with a neat finish before Terry headed home late on. Plzen had a man sent off and gave away a penalty but Anelka failed to convert.
Chelsea reverted to the diamond formation that was so successful in pre-season, with Kalou and Anelka starting up front and they caused problems right from the off. Kalou, making his first start of the campaign, ran clear early on but the keeper made a good save.

Chelsea's first half pressure came to no avail as keeper Marek Cech denied them on several occasions, diving down to parry an Anelka drive before making a fine diving save to deny Frank Lampard from range.
It took just over 5 minutes in the second half for Chelsea to take the lead though. Josh McEachran picked up the ball outside the box and lay a beautiful pass into space for Anelka who ran on and finished coolly for his first of the season.

Mikel was stretchered off with half an hour to go, which will be of concern to the manager. In his place came 16-year old schoolboy Nathaniel Chalobah for his first-team debut. He put in an assured performance in front of the back four, and set up the move that won the penalty.

Plzen pressed for an equaliser, but were thwarted by Chalobah who took the ball before launching the ball long for Kalou, who ran on and was brought down in the box by Milos Brazinsky, who received his second yellow and was given his marching orders.

Nicolas Anelka stepped up and blasted the ball over the bar, but it mattered not as five minutes later John Terry headed home a Josh McEachran corner to seal victory.

Illyroy said:
"It's a good 3 points. I had my heart in my mouth for the last half an hour, but the lads performed well. Alex was strong at the back and Josh put in a very impressive performance in that attacking midfield role."Nicolas will get his chances this season and as long as he keeps taking them like he did today then he will certainly be featuring."

Chelsea:
Cech, Ivanovic, Bertrand, Alex, Terry, Mikel (Chalobah 73), Lampard (Malouda 67), Ramires, McEachran, Anelka, Kalou (Lukaku 83)
Unused subs: Turnbull, Mata, Cole, Torres

Goalscorers:
Anelka (51), Terry (88)

Viktoria Plzen:
Cech, Cizek, Brezinsky, Cesovski, Limberski, Petrzela, Fillo, Horvath, Kola, Maly (Danek 88), Dobrovolny
Unused subs: Dvorak, Plesik, Gabriel, Mares, Hofmann, Horak

DAVID SILVA
127.jpeg

David Silva is one of the most influential playmakers in Europe at this point in time, and will certainly be the focus of City's attacking play against Chelsea tommorow. Incredible technical skills, agility and vision he is the jewel in a crown studded with immense talent. City will be hoping that this match kicks off a stuttering season.

MATCH NEWS

Chelsea have a full strength team to pick from minus the long-term absentee Michael Essien

Manchester City on the other hand will be without key midfielder Gareth Barry through injury, whilst Gael Clichy will miss the match with a suspension.

MATCH PREVIEW

Plenty of talking points in this match today. City sit 14th in the table after 4 matches and will be looking to put their latest loss at Wolves behind them with a win against Chelsea. The Blues are playing well but have only met one big team in Arsenal, and this match will truly be a test of their wits.
Chelsea have a dilemma at right back, in that all three are fit and in form. The manager will need to think carefully about who to play.
He talked to us this afternoon about City's slow start, his team dilemmas and Roberto Mancini.

Illyroy said:
"City haven't started how they might have imagined for a number of reasons, but I felt they were unlucky at Molineux last time out, and it will give them added motivation for this game. I saw the 3-0 victory against Genk and this is not a team that will be dwelling on that loss.
"I have a decision to make about playing Drogba, as he's just returned from injury and it may be too soon. Also at right-back we have a full quota of players and it will be a tough decision as to who will start the game.
"Roberto is a class manager and his team will definitely be up there by the end of the season. You can quote me on that."

MANCHESTER CITY 0 - 3 CHELSEA

11:45:
Good morning people and we have a fine game on our hands today! Chelsea, who sit 2nd in the table behind Arsenal, will play Manchester City who have yet to find their feet this season. Should be a cracker.

11:49: Interestingly, both of these teams have played and lost 2-1 to Arsenal this season, which could suggest that they are on an even keel. Chelsea will have to decide whether to favour the diamond that has given them success against the likes of Swansea and Wolves, or the 4-3-3 that we saw against Aston Villa, used to such good effect.

11:57: Hearing reports that Chelsea will be handing a second start of the season to Paulo Ferreira! Now that would be interesting, but after his performance against Villa last week, his name had to be in the hat.

12:08: And we're receiving the team sheets now, here they are..

Manchester City v Arsenal
Manchester City:
Hart, Richards, Kolorov, Onuoha, Lescott, Milner, Y. Toure, Ganso, Aguero, Silva, Dzeko. Subs: McGregor, Kompany, Hargreaves, Balotelli, Bridge, Johnson, de Jong
Chelsea: Cech, Ferreira, Cole, Terry, David Luiz, Mikel, Lampard, Meireles, Mata, Sturridge, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Ramires, Malouda, Romeu, Anelka, Drogba

12:13: Several talking points in those teamsheets. No room for club captain Kompany who is still recovering from a knock, whilst Paulo Ferreira does indeed start at right back, and there is no place for Jose Bosingwa. Drogba is on the bench, while Torres who still hasn't scored once this season, will start up front.

12:21: Players on the pitch to rapturous applause. The home fans will be wanting a win here today, and if they don't stay patient, it could work in Chelsea's favour..

12:30:
_46175659_whistle_44.jpg
There goes the whistle, and we're off here.

12:32:
Chelsea don't have the best of records here recently. They start on the backfoot, as Silva finds a pocket of space and takes aim, but Cech parries well.

12:36: Controversy! Sturridge cuts in and plays a magnificent lofted ball over the top of the City defence for Lampard who is taking aim before being pulled down by Onuoha who looks to be the last man. He's claiming a penalty. The referee gives a free-kick but no yellow card? Shocking decision from the ref.

12:37: GOALFLASH Manchester City 0 - 1 Chelsea (David Luiz)
_46175646_net_buster_44.jpg
Chelsea goal: Instant payback as Lampard's free kick is deflected out for a corner and from the resultant corner, David Luiz collects and slams home a perfect front post delivery.

12:46: City can't get a foothold here and it's Chelsea who are winning the midfield battle. With delivery to City's attacking line stunted, they look unable to penetrate the away team.

12:53: GOALFLASH Manchester City 0 - 2 Chelsea (Fernando Torres)

_46175646_net_buster_44.jpg
Chelsea goal: City cannot cope with Chelsea's set pieces at the moment, and Torres gets his first goal of the season from a David Luiz throw. Launched into the box, Torres collects and slams home past Hart. Too easy.

12:59: City's first real chance, and a corner is lofted in and flicked on to Yaya Toure but he heads the easiest of chances into the side netting.

13:03: Oooft and that would have been spectacular. Still buzzing from his first goal of the season, Torres collects a lofted ball and looks to catch Hart off his line with a superb lob, but it just lands on the roof of the net.

13:10: City hit the bar! Wonderful corner from Silva and Onuoha rises high but it crashes off the woodwork and is cleared by Raul Meireles.

13:16: HALF TIME Manchester City 0 - 2 Chelsea

_46175652_ht_44x.jpg
Manchester City 0 - 2 Chelsea

Chelsea will be delighted with that first half performance, and rightly so. They played the counter-attacking game perfectly and took their chances from set pieces. They haven't made too many openings in open play and City started to string some moves together toward the end of that first half, so they will have to guard against complacency.

13:30: Back underway here, and the Chelsea squad were out early and prepared. Kompany comes on for Dzeko, as they look to shore up their leaky defence. Big 45 minutes to come.

13:40: A poor clearance from David Luiz puts Torres under pressure and he commits a foul on Kompany. First player in the book.

13:42: Superb stop! Aguero is free in the box and turns before arrowing a thunderous strike goalwards, but Cech dives brilliantly to parry it to safety.

13:47: City are dominating play here, and Chelsea look to counter that as Drogba comes on for Torres, and Nicolas Anelka replaces Daniel Sturridge.

13:55: David Silva is coming off with injury here which is bad, bad news for Manchester City. In his place comes Mario Balotelli, the fiery centre forward.

14:02: City are playing some niec football now, but every time they get close they are foiled by a Chelsea defender. David Luiz typifies this as he slides in to deny Balotelli as he turns to pull the trigger. Ivanovic replaces Paulo Ferreira as we come to the dying stages.

14:06: Fine effort from Nicolas Anelka! He takes the ball on the right of the box and turns to hit a wonderful left footed strike, but it clips the post.

14:10: GOALFLASH Manchester City 0 - 3 Chelsea (Frank Lampard)

_46175646_net_buster_44.jpg
Chelsea goal: Clinical. Chelsea end the game brilliantly as Frank Lampard scores his first of the season. Meireles plays the ball from the right hand side to Lampard just outside the box who hits it hard and low into the bottom corner.

14:16: FULL TIME Manchester City 0 - 3 Chelsea

_46175649_5live_44.jpg
BBC Radio 5 Live Commentator Pat Nevin: "Chelsea were top drawer out there today. They nullified the threat with some great defending, and going forward they were clinical. Great display at a tough ground."

13:24: Chelsea Manager Illyroy: "We showed our class today. I think Roberto will be dissapointed with the scoreline but in truth, we played exactly how I wanted. I knew City had the players to keep possession and it was simply a case of counter-attacking and good set-piece work. I am very pleased with the performance."

13:26: That's it for today, and a great win for Chelsea! Until next time..

KEY PLAYER
DJ CAMPBELL
Campbell_2636075.jpg

With four goals in five games, DJ Campbell is certainly QPR's most dangerous striker, and as they edge further up the table, he is sure to cause some problems for Chelsea's defence. Great movement and a real poacher, he could get behind their backline tonight.

MATCH NEWS

Michael Essien
remains Chelsea's only absentee.

MATCH PREVIEW

Chelsea go into their first League Cup game on the back of three consecutive wins in all competitions. A 3-0 win against Manchester City last time will have boosted their confidence as they look to qualify for the next round.

Illyroy said:
"This is a tournament which we are looking to progress in. I will make no secret of that fact that I will be giving chances to fringe players in this squad, but only if I Believe they are capable of performing at this level.
"With players playing every few days this season, there will certainly be rests for the big players in games like this. That is not to say I am under-estimating the opposition or belittling the competition. The XI that I put out tonight has the capabilities of winning."

Please batter the scum even if it is only in the carling cup :p.

Daniel Sturridge was a danger all game and rounded his performance off with the winner

Chelsea cruised into the next round of the League Cup with a far too simple victory over their West London neighbours. Despite fielding a weaker side, Chelsea dominated the chances, with Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge on the scoresheet.

It didn't take long for Lampard to pick up where he left off against City as he blasted in from 25 yards to give Chelsea the lead after good work from Romelu Lukaku, making his full debut for Chelsea.

The Blues started with Josh McEachran and he made several chances for attacking duo Lukaku and Sturridge, although they were denied on several occasions by the impressive Kenny.

After half an hour, QPR grew into the game and created their first opportunity, DJ Campbell racing through, only to be denied by Cech. Barton also went close with a free kick, narrowly missing the far post as QPR chased for an equaliser.

After half-time, Chelsea punished QPR with a simple goal. Terry lofted the ball clear and Sturridge raced through to slot past Kenny and double the Blues lead. It was simple but effective football and it frustrated QPR.

The Hoops chased the game but it was a lost cause as Chelsea's second string side cruised to a simple victory which will have only stirred up local rivalry.

Illyroy said:
"I'm pleased for the fans, we came here and put on a good show and thoroughly deserved to win.
"Danny is finally starting to pay back the faith shown in him by the previous manager and I think he can be a big player this season. You can be sure to see plenty more of his ability."

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Cole, Terry, Alex, Romeu, Lampard, Ramires (Malouda 67), McEachran, Lukaku (Kalou 74), Sturridge
Unused subs: Turnbull, David Luiz, Anelka, Ivanovic, Torres

Goalscorers: Lampard (7), Sturridge (52)

QPR: Kenny, Young, Ferdinand, Andre, Hill, Wright-Phillips, Derry, Barton, Faurlin (Bothroyd 45), Sokolowski (Traore 45), Campbell (Taarabt 53)
Unused subs: Cerny, Connolly, Shittu, Hall

STEPHANE SESSEGNON

Key to Sunderland's attacking hopes, Sessegnon is a real gem of a player. Excellent technical abilities and a real eye for a pass, he plays just behind the strikers and has really caught the eye since moving from France. Will want to prove himself against Chelsea today.

MATCH NEWS

Both teams have full quotas available from their 25-man squad. Michael Essien remains unregistred and injured.

MATCH PREVIEW

So far this season Sunderland have been struggling which is in stark comparison to Chelsea. The Blues have managed four wins from five, only stumbling away to Arsenal and are in strong form. The Mackems will have to perform out of their skin to get something today.
It was also revealed this morning that Chelsea and Sunderland will meet in the 4th Round of the Carling Cup to add to the occasion. Illyroy spoke to the press about this today:

Illyroy said:
"Steve has struggled so far this season despite spending some money and I think he will want to rectify that this afternoon. In his defence, he has lost some big players and it will take some time to fill the void that they left.
"On our own front, we have a full selection to pick from and that gives me plenty to think about before tommorow. Torres and Drogba are both in good form and we could see them both start again tommorow, but I will decide nearer to the time."
