2016 Copa do Brasil

The Copa do Brasil is a knockout football competition played by 86 teams, representing all 26 Brazilian states plus the Federal District. The Copa do Brasil is an opportunity for teams from smaller states to play against the big teams and episodes of giant-killing have happened at a regular rate throughout the competition's history. It is the Brazilian domestic cup and the Brazilian equivalent of the FA Cup, Taça de Portugal, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal, and Copa Argentina, among others.


From 2001 to 2012, the Copa do Brasil was played in the first half of the year and in those seasons, due to the busy schedule in the first half of the year in Brazil, teams playing in the Copa Libertadores de América were not allowed to participate in the Copa do Brasil in the same year.


Since 2013, the tournament has run from March to November. Teams that contest the Copa Libertadores de América join the Copa do Brasil directly in Round of 16. Also, the best 8 teams from the previous year's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A eliminated up to the third round qualify for Copa Sudamericana.

The competition is a single elimination knockout tournament featuring two-legged ties. In the first two rounds, if the away team wins the first match by 2 or more goals, it progresses straight to the next round avoiding the second leg. The away goals rule is used in the Copa do Brasil, however, away goals rule is not applied if both teams are from the same city, like happened in 2006 Semi-Final (Fluminense and Vasco) and Final (Flamengo and Vasco) and in 2014 final (Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro).

The winner qualifies for the next year's Copa Libertadores de América.

The eligible teams to compete in the Copa do Brasil are the 70 best-placed clubs in the state championships, in which the number of spots per state range from one to three clubs, plus ten clubs best placed in CBF's ranking.


The 5 Brazilians teams in the Copa Libertadores da América plus the best placed in the previous year's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A will join the Copa do Brasil directly in Round of 16.

For the 2016 edition, since Atletico Mineiro played in the Copa Libertadores earlier in the season (Real Life, not in the game story), they were placed in the Fourth Round of the competition. After the draw, they will face:

Our opponent will be Santos. In the only meeting between the two clubs in this competiton was in 2010 after Santos eliminated Atletico Mineiro in Quarterfinals 5-4 on aggregate, where Santos went on to win the title that same year. Atletico Mineiro only title in this competition was in 2014 after they defeated Cruzeiro.

Cannot believe this result. We were better than America in every way possible and we still managed to lose by a stupid own goal. Hyuri made his first start in a long time but failed to impress. We loss Rafael Carioca due to injury.

Terrible result against the last place team. After selling Lucas Pratto to Tottenham, Fred hasn't been the difference maker in the club. Luckily Robinho helped as salvage a point at the end of the game. We need to bounce back with a win if we want to challenge for the title. Also in a non-surpirsing way, another player got injured, this time to Marcos Rocha.

Another draw for us today but at least the draw was against Botafogo. Our scoring problem continues as we getting plenty of opportunities but aren't converting them. Junior Urso will miss the next match due to getting his 3rd yellow card.

Luan and Atletico Mineiro has reached an agreement that will allow Luan to stay with the club until 2020. As the club's key member, this is a great news as we get to keep him for at least four more years. His new contract will start at the end of the season.

The speedy winger joined Atletico Mineiro in 2013. He became of the club top player after Bernard left. He speed and hustle makes him one of the most feared players in the league. Since joining, he help Aletiico Mineiro win the Campeonato Mineiro in 2013, 2015, and 2016; Copa Libertadores in 2013; Copa do Brasil in 2014; Recopa in 2014; and Primeira Liga in 2016.​

Atletico Mineiro and FC Lorient have agreed on loan deal that will send the attacking midfielder to the French League. The loan will last until the end of the Ligue 1 season. The loan also gives Lorient the option to buy him for a fee of $2.3 million. Hyuri has not been featured in my plans throughout the season and I felt like that the chances that I gave him, he was not good for me.​

Our struggles continues as loss another game. Trying to play a more attacking tactic in a 4-2-3-1 formation but it was not effective as we only had two chances on target in the first half. Going back to the 4-3-3, we played better but it was not enough.

Great win against Atletico Paranaense today. Fred got a hat-trick today and Atetico Paranaense's player scored an own goal. The only down side was that Fabio Santos gave away a stupid penalty. Leonardo Silva had his first start since his injury.

Huge win for us today. This is our third straight win in Campeonato Brasileiro. We rested our starting eleven since we want to focus on Copa do Brasil. We won by a comeback after both Fred and Ronaldinho scored against their former club.

We qualified to the Quarterfinals of Copa do Brasil after a big win over Santos in the 2nd leg. Clayton scored two goals, Leonardo Silva scored his first goal of the season and Robinho scored against his former club. Leo Silva gave away a bad penalty towards the end but it didn't matter.

What a game! We came back down two goals to tie the game against Cruzeiro. Fred got another hat trick. In the first 20 minutes, we were lost and couldn't get a shot. After a couple of changes, we started to attack more and it paid off.

Atletico Goianiense in the Quarterfinals. This is the first ever meeting between the two club in this competition. Atletico Goianiense have never won the competition with their best run was in 2010, where they were Semifinalist. Atletico Mineiro won the competition in 2014 after beat their rivals Cruzeiro.
