Harbin Yiteng 2017 Update Part 1

Fixtures

2/3s of the season out of the way and we still maintain our hold on promotion, now fighting for the title with Yongchang! Our only loss came from Qingdao game which they scored a late winner. But we got our revenge later in the FA Cup beating them to advance to 4th round which we promptly destroyed the Super League side Chongqing 5-1! In the quarterfinals, we again beat a Super League side Beikong to book ourselves in a two leg semifinal. The run of wins astound me as we seem to be scoring every single game even if Lugo has a day off or is not playing!

Chinese FA Cup

Our run in the FA continues as we take on Yanbian from Super League in the Semi Final. Two legs will be played and I am hoping we can scrap pass them into the Final!

Squad

Rather large squad eh? I have promoted a few youngsters into the first team to hopefully improve their training a bit, don't worry as they will still get game time with U-19s and Reserves. Anyway as for the players Lugo remains our top scorer with 13 and Abe behind him with 9. But Abe continues to be our top provider with 9 and Tianyu with 8. Squad is happy and mostly fit, a few player have complained about lack of game time and I had to play them a bit. Only disappointing players are new signing Moosa and winger Xiaoxuan who have not done in the games even they have picked up a few goals each. They are rated highly and will need to improve to remain in the squad for next season.

Akinobu Abe

Loving this player! He is slowly improving himself and still picking up goals and assists. Superstar for the future!

Qi Tianyu

Slowly improving as a midfielder, dominant on the ball and has been a good provider for the team, often chipping balls behind defense for Lugo to run onto.

Upcoming Fixtures

Not long to go with 10 more League games and FA Cup Semi Finals. Yongchang near the end of the season could be the title decider.

FA Cup Semi Final Leg 1

First things first....

Another win before we play the FA Cup game. Made a mistake by putting Jungang on as a striker during one of my substitutions but he scored anyway! He normally plays a defensive mid.

Away game at Yanbian and they look a strong team on paper so I use my counter attacking tactic that has been successful the whole season.

Strong team on paper, Lugo benched for Moosa as I feel Lugo can be the impact sub later in the game. Taoyu picked as the left attacking midfielder ahead of disappointing Jiawei and Xiaoxuan.

Yanbian's manager probably had the same thoughts against my giant killing team, opting to match my tactic.

Down to a early goal. Taoyu repays my faith in him.

Abe finds the net with a header. Substitution Jiawei scores after opposition error.

Strong start to the tie, with a home game left. Yanbian had most of the ball but we were more prolific in front of goal. Final seems to be a reality for us provided we hold the lead. But 5 League games till the second leg!

In other news I have extended my contract with Harbin Yiteng till end of 2018!

Could two trophies be on the horizon?

Lofty heights! Only four games to go!

Coming from the FA Cup Semi Final Leg 1, we have continued our fine run, smashing records with 12 wins in a row and 18 games unbeaten!

Despite the wins we lost Michel Lugo and Akinobu Abe to injuries in the same match against Chengdu. Both ruled out for 4-5 weeks which includes the FA Cup Semi Final Leg 2.

Media reckons it will be an easy victory but have a look at my squad below, my best striker and right winger ruled out due to injuries along with Li Xudong(DC) and Ji Xiaoxuan (AMRL). Sun Jungang also out due to suspension.

Sticking with my best formation and Moosa starts up front, Zhiqang continues to stand in for Abe. Jiawei and Liang get to start this time due to complaints about playing time. Also decided to put some promising youngsters on the bench, Liang Hui(ST) who has been scoring well lately, Dong Cong(RB), Wu Teng(ST) and Xie Qiang(MC)

As with the First Leg, Yanbian's manager sticks to the same tactic against us.

Yanbian strike first but Moosa finds a rare goal to put us ahead safely on aggregate score.

I really wasn't going all out attack in this game as we had a good lead so was keen to sit back and get some youngsters on in the second half. Still we had good control over Yanbian in terms of possession and shots attempted. Never felt like the game was going to slip away.

So we are in the final against Jiangsu, another Super League club. And it will be played over two legs. Could a double be on this season?

Four more league games to go till end of season and we will be crowned champions possibly in the first two coming up!

Disappointed as I felt more of the squad should have been in the Team of the Year.

Youth Intake

Two interesting players came through in this seasons batch.

Deng Gang, attacking central midfielder with good passing, flair and work rate, obliviously needs a lot of development time to get anywhere near first team.

A promising defender, needs work on his mental attributes but could be one for the future.

Chinese FA Final Away Leg vs Jiangsu

Tactics

Lined up with my strongest squad possible, Lugo up front, Xu, Tianyu and Jungang securing the midfield with Yongdi and Abe on the wings. Wei and Xudong paired as centre backs flanked by Yi and Junjian and Yuelei between the sticks.

Jiangsu, like rest of the teams this season line up with a tactic to match us.

A draw with Jiangsu being the better of two teams but we held on and take the tie back home.

Tactics

Only two changes to the line up, Jungang swapped with Xiaodong and Tianyu dropped back to defensive mid. Also Yongdi and Xiaoxuan starts as left winger.

Same tactics as last time.

Match

Dull first half until Xiaoxuan breaks the deadlock, scoring from an opponents error. Jiangsu gave away a penalty and Lugo converts easily.

Abe kills the game on 87th minute, seizing on an opponents mistake.

Double Champions!

Balanced game but the chances came our way.

By winning the FA Cup means we qualified for Asia Champions League next season!

Another season done and dusted..

Harbin Yiteng 2017 Season Review

Double Champions!

Center midfielders dominate the fans player of the season list, with Tianyu sweeping up the awards with Fans Player of the Season, Signing of the Season and Young Player of the Season. Lugo gets the Goal of the Season.

Squad

Best performers: Qi Tianyu(MC) was of course the best player in the team with highest rating and top of assists at 12 plus scoring 6 goals. Akinobu Abe also performed well for an 18 year old, notching 11 goals and laying on 11 assists. Superstar for the future! Michel Lugo did well up front putting 17 goals away with 6 assists. Moosa was predominantly played from the bench and struggled to get going but 6 goals is ok. Needs to prove more next season but might get sold in the transfer window if another good foreigner player comes along.

Large squad will be trimmed down a bit for next season, Guo Liang(DL) retiring, Li Jian(DR), Ding Jie(DR), Zhang Song(CB), Zhu Shiyu(MC), Wei Jiawei(AML) and Ji Xiaoxuan(AML/R) want to leave due to lack of game time and will mostly sold or released.

I have promoted a few youngsters into the first team, Liang Hui(ST) being the brightest of the lot, doing well in the last few league games, scoring off the bench, will be subject of many CHinese club offers over the transfer period so will do my best to hold onto him. Dong Cong(DR) and Xie Qiang(MC) will be around the first team next season unless they get good loan offers.

As for transfers and tactics next season I will be retaining the tactics as we did well against Super League clubs in FA Cup so its a matter of just adding quality over quantity to the side, need a new center back, left back, right back, left winger and possibly more center midfielders.

We will see how the window shapes up as I need to get the squad ready for Asian Champions League quickly which just starts before next season.

Draw sees us in a very tough group, don't know if we have a chance to break through to next round at all...

League Table

We have made it to the Super League, 2nd time in club history to play in the league! At least it won't be boring as our rivals A'erbin will be fighting with us.

Media Prediction

Does not bode well for us but we have proven them wrong last season.

Chinese FA Super Cup

We take on the Super League champions Shandong, arguably the best club in China right now. Will be a tough match but at least it will played at our stadium.

Harbin Yiteng 2018 Pre-season Transfers

January 2018 began with 12 players leaving, most notable are Wei Jiawei(AML) and Ding Jie(DR)who left as they would not agree to new contacts and wanted more playing time.

By the end of window I have offloaded quite a few reserves players and sent a few out on loan, Qiang being the major one as he is a promising midfielder for me but I felt he won't get enough game time as I signed a few experienced midfielders. Profit of 769K CNY

Maximum of 0 foreign goalkeepers

Seven players brought in, no foreign players despite signing 3 Hong Kong internationals. They are classified as non-foreign under league rules. I had plenty of transfer budget to use but I felt I wanted cheap bargain buys, bought 3 players on free and kept transfer fees low, picking up a cheap signing from our rivals A'erbin!

Reason for Hong Kong buys? Michel Lugo previously played there and he turned out well for me so I had scouts to dig in deeper and found a few good players that could potentially be good for us.



Players

First up is Sean Tse, Hong Kong international was playing in the Hong Kong League until I activated his minimum fee release clause. A good defensive mid who also can play at center back and in midfield. Also a former Manchester City academy player. Signed for 350K CNY

Hu Yanqiang comes in as a talented back up to Abe on right wing. I decided to grab him on a free as Abe has been reluctant to open talks to sign a new contract which expires at end of season.(Dislikes me for some reason, little ****!) Anyway Hu looks a promising winger, good pace and teamwork skills. Determination a bit low at 5 but I hope he can improve a bit. Signed on free

Li Tixiang, is an experienced midfielder who brings in much needed set piece taking skills as that was an area last season we did poorly in. Has great composure and can be a creative player. Will be looking to start him regularly in midfield. Signed on free

Another experienced Hong Kong international, Shay Spitz fills in the left back position, possessing good defensive skills for Super League level. Most expensive player of the window as I signed him for 600K from Eastern. Also kudos for an interesting last name! "Spitz on goal!"

Harbin Yiteng 2018 Pre-season Transfers Cont.

Another player bought from Hong Kong League, Wellingsson a former Brazilian turned Hong Kong international will be playing as a left winger, not a glamorous player but will do as I had a few players leave so needed a backup/rotation player. Signed for 400K CNY after triggering minimum release clause.

**** Yaopeng, signed on free, a young centre back with good leadership qualities. Will be used as a backup with view being a first team if his attributes improve. Signed on free

Last signing of the window, Zhou Hibin comes in as midfielder with good attacking qualities, will be used primary as a rotation player. Signed on one year contract due to advanced age. Signed on free

Squad

Pretty much kept the core of the squad, just added a few midfield and defensive upgrades and slimmed down the squad removing deadwood and unhappy players. I am sticking with the strikers I have. I tried to see if there was another good foreigner striker to replace Moosa but nothing worthwhile was found so will be sticking with Lugo up front and having Moosa and Hui as backups. Liang Hui was subjected to Chinese transfer interest through out the pre-season and was unhappy at one point as I kept turning down the offers but **** I wasn't going to let him go as he could be good and most of the offers were **** poor anyway!

Have a lot of work on renewing contracts, Abe being the biggest one as I have mentioned before, is unwilling to open talks due to disliking me. So if he doesn't sign a new deal before June window then I am cashing on him.

Pre-season and Upcoming Fixtures

Rather short pre-season due to Champions League starting early along with Super Cup, so I arranged for 2 easy fixtures and two hard ones against South Korean clubs. No surprises we lost the Korean games but Jeju one was rather unlucky, conceding a late goal. Last warm up against HEB Longll was a ****** good one with 3 of my defensive players getting on the scoreboard! Hard to judge the team much after 4 warm up games, feel we should be fine if I start most of the regulars from last season and ease in the new players.

Anyway first game of the 2018 Champions League campaign is against Western Sydney Wanderers and it will hopefully be a start of a good season.​

AFC and Super Cup!

First up is our first ever appearance in AFC Champions League against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Media reckons we are in for a tough time and I do agree.

Tactics

Fronting up with my mostly unchanged squad from last year as most of my new signings weren't registered in time for Champions League. Only two new signings in the side, Sean Tse as defensive midfield and Li Tixiang on bench. Lugo starts up front and Yongdi and Abe flanking him on wings. Last season star Tianyu given creative license with Xu supporting him.

WSW line up with a defensive tactic, odd considering their superior firepower over us.

Match

Held on for a draw. Felt we had the edge but WSW were too strong for us to break down. Downside is losing Michel Lugo for 4-5 weeks.

Playing against last year Super League champions Shandong Luneng.

With Lugo injured, Moosa starts up front, Wellingsson given his debut along with Spitz on left flank. Trixiang also given a start in midfield along with Xiaodong and Tianyu sitting in defensive mid.

Match

Shandong had the upper hand in first half, peppering our goal yet they couldn't break through. I swapped Moosa for Hui at half time as Moosa struggled and immediately it payed of with Hui finding the net. We hung on till the end of the game.

Strong start, only to see the team stutter

Mixed bag of results, disappointing losses in the Champions League and the team have seem to be in a slump. Getting concerned with the squad and goalscorers in the team.

League Table

10 games and we are only 7 points off the leaders. Our strong start has pushed us up the table but after last few games have seen us slip back down.

Out of Champions League early. But we managed to redeem ourselves, finishing 3rd and a historic CL win over Seoul.

50/50 game with us putting away a good chance over a very tough team.

No outstanding players as team is struggling to score goals, with Abe and Hui notching 4 and 3 goals respectfully. Hu Yanqiang has 4 assists to his name in a impressive start since signing in the January window. No bad players at the moment though Taoyu could do with a kick up the backside. Could do with a bit more firepower upfront as Moosa and Lugo cannot seem to get going in the games, a bit concerning considering the fact that Lugo was a star performer last season!

Time to focus on the league and the recent slump. Maybe need to reinforce the squad in the upcoming June window with more signings.​

Forgot about grabbing a screenshot of the squad but not much would have been said about the team due to poor form, Tianyu continues to be the top performer while all of my strikers are horribly out of form.

Have 10 more league games to avoid relegation and hopefully we progress into the Chinese FA Cup Final.

This season at Harbin Yiteng will be my last as I sort of want to move on to another country.

Our poor run continued in the last 10 Super League matches, with us flirting near relegation spots so it was surprise we managed to get a win over A'erbin on the last day to confirm our safety, finishing 12th. Other than that we progressed in the FA Cup to the Finals against the Super League Champions Beijing. Which was played over two legs, each team scoring in the away legs and Beijing getting the better of us in penalties.

Tianyu and Tixiang were players of the season for me, being a solid base in the midfield, each providing 6 assists. Etuhu, Wellingsson were the better of my recent signings, Etuhu bedding in the defense solidly and Wellingsson being a menace on the left wing. As for the rest of the squad were about average or below par but no need for the review as I am resigning.
