EURO Cup Quarter Final Leg 1: Benfica 2 : 0 ESPANYOL
With the international players still travelling back from their respective countries, I was yet again forced to play ‘second’ players. This suited Benfica perfectly as they had a near-full squad. Unfortunately, they were the better team on the day, and I’ve no complaints about this defeat.

I’m just hoping for a better return at home.

• Average Rating: 6.80
• Man of the Match: Ruben Micael, 7.7
• Number of goals scored: 102

Sunday, 7th.

Liga BBVA match 31: Almeria 3 : 3 ESPANYOLDavid (68, 86), J. Forlin (78)
This was a truly cracking match for both sets of fans, and I’m not too downhearted by the outcome either. Almeria always tend to be solid at home, and avoiding defeat was top of the list for today. David brought the scores level after going down 2-0 with two excellent finishes, one deservedly earning him goal of the month, and Juan Forlin scored yet another to equalise yet again.

Not too happy, yet not too disappointed.

• Average Rating: 6.92
• Man of the Match: David, 8.7
• Number of goals scored: 105
Current league standing: 1st

Thursday, 11th.

EURO Cup Quarter Final Leg 1: ESPANYOL 4 (4) : (3) 1 BenficaR. Soldado (11, 42, 68), R. van Persie (50)
I expected us to take the game to Benfica, and by god we did! Soldado got us off to a great start, scoring after 10 minutes, then went on to score a superb hat-trick. Dutchman Robin van Persie added a fourth to the match, with the only reply being an Oscar Cardozo penalty right before half time. We’re through to the semi final XD

Brilliant performance. Soldado really is indispensible.

• Average Rating: 7.40
• Man of the Match: Roberto Soldado, 9.4
• Number of goals scored: 109

The win puts us in the semi final with Panathinaikos.

Sunday, 14th.

Liga BBVA match 32: ESPANYOL 3 : 0 XerexS. Keita (63, 76), David (74)
Before this match, Xerex lay in 14th place, so it was important to threaten them with attacking play. With nothing much happening in the first half, I swapped Guardado with Keita at the break. He then went on to score the two goals that started and ended the match. Youngster David also keeps his scoring record up with a well taken goal.

Fantastic performance, good result.

• Average Rating: 7.29
• Man of the Match: Seydou Keita, 8.6
• Number of goals scored: 112
Current league standing: 1st

Wednesday, 17th.

Liga BBVA match 33: Real Betis 1 : 2 ESPANYOLV. Obinna (78), J. Verdu (90+4)
Thank fudge for Joan Verdu! Going one-nil down within the first quarter of an hour was not a pleasing sight, but the lads managed to fight back with two stunning goals – Victor Obinna scored a great point blank header to bring the scores level, then Joan Verdu won the game in the 4th minute of added-on time.

Disappointing performance.

• Average Rating: 6.88
• Man of the Match: Fernando Gago, 7.5
• Number of goals scored: 114
Current league standing: 1st

Sunday, 21st.

Liga BBVA match 34: Athletic Bilbao 2 : 3 ESPANYOLR. Soldado (54, 81), A. Guardado (74)
I knew this was going to be a hard match, but going down 2-0 at half time is unacceptable. A spirited fightback started and ended by Soldado proved we are worth every win we have this season. The Spaniard scored on 54 minutes, rounding off a fantastic move by the team. Guardado scored after a brilliant one-two with Soldado, and the striker managed to pop in a third from a corner.

Disappointed with early signs of disaster. Ecstatic with fightback.

• Average Rating: 7.13
• Man of the Match: Roberto Soldado, 8.6
• Number of goals scored: 117
Current league standing: 1st

Thursday, 25th.

EURO Cup Semi Final Leg 1: Panathinaikos 0 : 1 ESPANYOLR. Soldado (23)
I didn’t expect was to follow, as I thought Panathinaikos’ strength would put some of our smaller players to the test. Roberto Soldado scored the only goal in what I can only call a lucky win.

A really good performance by everyone, and pleased with the win.

• Average Rating: 7.11
• Man of the Match: Andres Guardado, 7.5
• Number of goals scored: 118

Sunday, 28th.

Liga BBVA match 35: ESPANYOL 1 : 0 Valencia – R. Soldado (90+1)
With the season coming to a close, it was really important to think about the end of the league year. Roberto Soldado scored the winner (the only goal) in the first minute of added time at the end of the match.

We ran Valencia off the park. Pleased.

• Average Rating: 7.15
• Man of the Match: Asmir Begovic, 7.8
• Number of goals scored: 119
Current league standing: 1st

Pleasing points of the month

• Remarkable comeback against Athletic Bilbao.
• Progressing to the semi final of the EURO Cup.

Disappointing points of the month

• Losing the first tie of the EURO Cup QF.

EURO Cup Semi Final Leg 2: ESPANYOL 4 (5) : (1) 1 PanathinaikosR. Soldado (32, 71), S. Keita (36), R. van Persie (39)
A near-exact replay of what happened in the Quarter Final of the EURO Cup against Benfica – beating the away side 4-1. Roberto Soldado put in yet another world class performance with two goals to help us on our way. Keita and van Persie scored the others to guarantee us a place in the EURO Cup Final once again.

Very, very pleased. Why can’t we perform like this every match?

• Average Rating: 7.43
• Man of the Match: Roberto Soldado, 8.5
• Number of goals scored: 123

The win puts us into the final against Fiorentina. Let’s have it! ;)

Sunday, 5th.

Liga BBVA match 36: Tenerife 1 : 3 ESPANYOL R. van Persie (41, 49), J. Verdu (90+2)
This was a great match for everyone to watch, with Robin van Persie coming up with two goals he highly deserved. Joan Verdu scored a late winner after Tenerife threatened our defence and even scored on 90 minutes. Despite being sent off for violent conduct, van Persie also claimed the Man of the Match award.

Pleased with result and performance despite sending off.

• Average Rating: 7.24
• Man of the Match: Robin van Persie, 8.2

Current league standing: 1st

I'll update more tomorrow, really tired. I want to let you know that I'm only 1 point (in 2 games) away from the Liga BBVA title again, and I'm in the EURO Cup and Spanish Cup finals, and they are both soon to come. Hope you're all enjoying my story so far.

Looks like van persie is on his way to become the signing of the year. Great story mate! I wanted to do a story about espanyol too, but there's no way it would have been as good as this one. So I made an Ajax story instead :)

Thanks man!

Glad someone commented, thought nobody's following anymore :'( XD

Rest assured that your story is being followed Mike, I've just caught up with it myself and I am really looking forward to the Euro Cup final (who is it against?)

I had the same feelings about my own story [is it being followed], but posts are like buses... none for a while and then five or six come along at once! There are so many stories being created now that people are spoilt for choice, the more discerning readers will be following this one though... one of the best on the site in my humble opinion. Keep up the good work!

I'll update a little later on ^^)

Pompey_Dan, the final is against Fiorentina.

MAY cont.

Sunday, 12th.

17:00: Lee Young-Pyo and Beckham set dates for retirement. Both players cost Espanyol manager Wayne Thomas nothing at the beginning and middle of last season. Lee Young-Pyo has decided to hang up his boots on Friday, 27th December 2013. David Beckham, however, set his sights earlier than this, and is quitting football on Saturday, 29th June.

David wins award as Young Player of the Year. Spain U21 captain and Espanyol’s young sensation David has scooped the Spanish Young Player of the Year ahead of Athletico Madrid’s Leandro Cabrera and Xavier Ordoyo.

Liga BBVA match 37: ESPANYOL 6 : 2 GimnasticValdo (1), R. Soldado (10), David (23), Geromel (28), E. Ramos (80), F. Gago (90+1)
What a way to clinch the title! I couldn’t really run the risk of getting anyone injured due to the EURO Cup Final being this Wednesday, but I really needed to secure it. We ran riot with 6 different scorers: Valdo, Soldado, David, Geromel, Ramos and Gago, all of which were good to watch ripple the back of the net!

Delighted. Let’s get the double!

• Average Rating: 7.67
• Man of the Match: Eduardo Ramos, 8.4
• Number of goals scored: 132
Current league standing: 1st

We are the champions yet again of the Liga BBVA!

FIORENTINA : ESPANYOL

Both sides had arguably their best squads out for the final today. With the tension high and the atmosphere electric, both teams were looking to take the EURO Cup home. It was really end to end stuff, right from the off. It was Espanyol that took the lead with – yes, you guessed it – Roberto Soldado, with a clinical finish from the 18-yard line. I opted for aggressive attacking and tight defending as soon as we scored. I was really confident off the win, right until Stevan Jovetic equalised on the 89 minute mark. I was truly gutted, and really thought we’d go on to lose the match. Luckily, no goals came from Fiorentina within extra time, but then again, nothing from us either. It was down to penalties. This is how it looked:

With praise heaped upon the Espanyol lot, it has given them the boost to go on to finish the season unbeaten, and even challenge for the Spanish Cup.

Over the moon!

• Average Rating: 7.01
• Man of the Match: Andres Guardado, 7.5
• Number of goals scored: 133

Sunday, 19th.

Liga BBVA match 38: Valladolid 0 : 2 ESPANYOLC. Vela (40, 44)
A good performance was put in but Vela which will undoubtedly be his last game in an Espanyol shirt. The Mexican scored two goals in quick succession to show that he still has potential. No reply from Valladolid means it was a league season without defeat! :D

Great game.

• Average Rating: 7.15
• Man of the Match: Carlos Vela, 8.7
• Number of goals scored: 135
FINAL LEAGUE STANDING: CHAMPIONS

ATHELTICO MADRID : ESPANYOL

Athletico Madrid went into this final thinking they were going to win it, with reports stating that they have become runners up more times than they’ve actually won the competition. Espanyol, however, went into the match hoping that the above statement would stay the same for at least another year. Athletico Madrid kicked off the final, and from the off they piled pressure on Espanyol, and vice versa. Not one goal within the 90 minutes of football, so extra time was needed. Robin van Persie scored first, and just before ET half time, Madrid equalise. Straight after the break, Espanyol went 2-1 down, but Valdo scored a penalty with 9 minutes to spare. Another cup final to be decided on penalties, and it was Athletico who took their chances.
Despite the defeat, we can still hold our heads high and remind ourselves of the European and league glory once again.

Next season: Champions League!

• Average Rating: 7.13
• Man of the Match: Tranquillo Barnetta, 7.6
• Number of goals scored: 137

So, yet another fantastic season for us: Champions of the Liga BBVA again, EURO Cup Winners again, and Spanish Super Cup winners. Hopefully this success will bring more in the future, with next season’s goal being the Champions League.

Well spotted with the penalties thing, just checked back and it definitely says I won the pens XD dunno what went wrong there.

And if you read again it says Spanish Super Cup ;)

also fiorentina wouldnt be participating in either the spanish cup or the spanish super cup lol.

ive had the shootout glitch 3 times. twice in my favour, once against

Yeah my bad guys

Tired eyes must sleep lol

nice. shame velas still being a naughty little mexican <)

Naughty little Mexican indeed XD he's off to Sevilla, so he's their problem now (A)

It's a shame about those pens. I had it once (in a different game) I actually won the penalties but was knocked out of the cup because it said I hadn't :S

Congrats on getting the Moderator trial ^^)

cheers mate, takes a bit of getting used to though. you know how you can click the quote button to quote another user in your reply? well i now how have an edit button (yes i can edit everyones posts lol) next to it, and i keep clikcing it when i mean to quote!!!!!

good decision, unles he bangs in a load of goals for sevillaXD

yeah its a nice surprise when you lose a shootout and then in the news it says you went through, but absoultely gutting when its the other way round

LOL yep. Ah well, at least I DID win this won, I'd have chucked my laptop out the window otherwise XD

I'm thinking of creating a tactic to accommodate my players for the next season, trying to get Obinna and Soldado to play up top together. Trying to think of a suitable tactic though.

Fantastic season Mike, congrat's on winning the Euro Cup and it was a real acheivement to finish the La Liga unbeaten.

With the priority being the Champions League next season I just have one question... what will you have left to do if you win it?!! ;)
