I think this rule was there from years but refs rarely dish out yellow card for waving imaginary cards. I have seen them giving but not everytime.

Portugal's center, especially Moutinho , have been unflappable tonight, so my guess is first he first send Fabregas in to try and take control of midfield, and when that failed Navas+Pedro to provide some width and exploit open spaces when people get tired. Seems to be working so far, too.

Indeed, for all the conspiracy stuff from the Portuguese, the ref has been in their favour overall.
