EVERTON VS Q.P.R

linebreak-1.png

Having brushed aside Championship side Leeds United in Round 2, Everton are preparing to face their second Championship side in Q.P.R at Goodison Park this afternoon. With the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal coming into the competition at the 3rd Round many people believe this is when it really hots up. Everton are once again expected to name a somewhat weakened line up in comparison to the team that defeated Tottenham Hotspur so comfortably in the weekend. Ahead of the match Andy Gray stated that he was likely to give ex Hull City star Tom Cairney the opportunity to show everyone what he can do in front of the Everton fans. There is no doubt that Everton will want to turn on the style today against Q.P.R and gain qualification to the 4th Round of the competition.

Q.P.R are currently lying in 5th position it the Championship and have been in good form, showing their promotion credentials under boss Neil Warnock, who ahead of the match was quoted as saying, "It's no doubt going to be a tough match for us today, for any team to go to Goodison Park and get a result it takes alot, as shown this season. I would love us to get a result against the Toffee's because these cup runs can generate momentum that will allow us hopefully continue in our promotion push.

"Our objective is no doubt going to be to try and stifle Everton and stop them from playing their football. They have already shown this season that they have fantastic strength in depth, with Andy in charge he has taken that into account and this is helping them in the Carling Cup."

With two changes from Everton's side that faced Leeds United in the 2nd Round with Tony HIbbert in place of club captain Phil Neville. The other change is Jermaine Beckford coming in for Romelu Lukaku who has been in top form so far this season and is no doubt being rested for Everton's away trip to Sunderland in the coming weekend. Elsewhere Moussa Sissoko starts in the centre of midfield alongside Tom Cairney who will no doubt be looking to put in top performances in a bid to force their way into the first team squad. As expected Tim Cahill is included and starts in his inside forward role once again against Q.P.R, who on the other hand are without star man Adel Taarabt who has been in top form for the R's.

Andy Gray said:
"Today is going to be an important game for us today, we're in front of our home fans and we want to put in a strong performance. I think it's going to be of a top priority of ours to gain qualification to the 4th Round of the competition because every game is going to give valuable experience to the youthful players that have joined the club. We obviously need experience out there and I feel with Phil Jagielka, Tim Cahill and Tony Hibbert we certainly have that out there. We are going to look to dominate the game and control the tempo as well as keep possession of the ball, which I feel we have done well in recent weeks.

Jermaine Beckford comes in up front in place of Romelu, because I feel that it is important to keep all of our players fresh, we have a busy schedule and I want to keep all of the players match fit and ready to come into the first team if required. I have been buoyed by the growth and understanding that is developing in training between Tom Cairney and Moussa Sissoko, they look very sharp and am looking forward to seeing them in action today. They both have fantastic talent, vision and ability on the ball, they have all the attributes to become top Premiership footballers and this is an ideal match for them to show me what they can do."

Everton turned on the style today as Queens Park Rangers were brushed aside at Goodison Park today. The 30,000 Everton fans who turned up today witnessed a demolition of the Championship outfit, as new signing Moussa Sissoko came to the forefront and scored a stunning brace to sink the R's. Despite the scoreline and overall control that Everton showed it was in fact their keeper who was first tested in the 5th minute after a Pascal Chimbonda cross/shot was parried by Tim Howard, however this was going to be the only time that the Everton keeper was going to be tested.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 19th minute with new signing Moussa Sissoko showing his ability after picking up the ball from Tim Cahil to score a wonderfully placed finish from just outside the area that left Q.P.R keeper Paddy Kenny wondering how the Frenchman had managed to beat with with such ease. Just 5 minutes later it was once again Paddy Kenny who was picking the ball back out of his net thanks to some fantastic work from new signing Tom Cairney who picked up the ball on the left flank and put a wonderful cross into the centre of the box for Jermaine Beckford to pick up the ball before scoring a well placed finish with his left foot to make it 2 - 0.

Beckford was delighted to score another goal or new club Everton

With Everton in complete control it was new signing Tom Cairney who came close to making it three in the 30th minute after firing a powerful 25 yard shot that smashed the bar before ending up outside the Q.P.R box, it was a top quality effort that deserved a goal from the 19 year-old. Just moments later it was Tom Cairney who from a free kick on the edge of the area forced a top save from Q.P.R keeper Paddy Kenny. Everton's midfield was in scintillating form with the trio of new signings looking comfortable in possession and not giving the opposition any time on the ball what so ever. The stand out performer in that respect was Helge Haugen who made it his task to close down and put in tackles all over the pitch.

Just before the end of the first half new signing Tom Cairney once again came close smashing a long ranged effort from outside the area that clipped the bar and went out for a goal kick. It just looked a matter of time until the boy would grab his first goal for Everton. With both teams going in at half time it will no doubt be Andy Gray who had the easier team talk, and with 5 minutes of the teams emerging from the tunnel Moussa Sissoko nearly grabbed his second of the day when his long ranged effort crashed off the bar to go out for a goal kick, it was a wonderful effort, where he showed his technique and power spinning away from a Q.P.R defender.

Moussa Sissoko put in a midfield master class against Q.P.R in front of the Everton fans

However, the French midfielder did not have to wait long to grab his second goal of the day and when it eventually came it was a joy to behold. After some wonderful midfield interplay between Helge Haugen, Tom Cairney and Moussa Sissoko it was the latter who picked up the ball on the edge of the area before firing a wonderfully curled effort that flew straight into the top corner of the net, with the commentator shouting the football statement, 'no keeper in the world would have saved that.' Moussa looked delighted to grab his first two goals for Everton as he aided them to the 4th Round of the Carling Cup. The game then took a dark turn as Everton were forced to take off a badly injured Tony Hibbert who suffered a potentially serious injury, with John Heitinga coming on for the one-club-man.

The final goal of the day eventually came in extra time, and there were no surprises that it was indeed the substitute John Heitinga who came up for a corner and scored a wonderfully headed effort from substitute Leon Osman's corner kick. Andy Gray looked delighted as he saw his team cruise into the 4th Round of the Carling Cup and after the match said, "What a performance from the lads today, we had a lot of new signings boys out there today, and they played like they had been together for years. If we can continue to gel and perform in this then I feel that we are going to be a match for anyone, it was a fantastic match today and we certainly showed the fans what we can do."

Big Four - What Big Four?

In the wake of the Carling Cup 3rd Round of matches, fans from the so called 'Big Four' will be rubbing their eyes in disbelief as all four were knocked out after naming weakened first 11's in the belief that would be enough to overcome their opponents.

No doubt the stand out performance in the Carling Cup 4th Round came from the Cardiff City Stadium which saw Manchester United slump to a 3 - 2 defeat after extra time, thanks to goals from Chris Burke, Michael Chopra and an own goal from Gary Neville. Everton will no doubt be delighted and believe that without the big guns, there is more chance for themselves.

great story mate, as an aussie and toffee supporter im pleased to see timmy cahill and everton performing so well

A match that pundits and fans alike believed would be a tough encounter against a resilient Sunderland side did not pan out in the way that was expected with Everton running out comfortable 3 - 0 winners. However the scoreline doesn't tell the entire story as it could have been different on another day. With Everton reverting to their full strength line up it was expected that they would be able to control the game but this certainly wasn't the case, as it was the home side who came out of the traps flying, pushing Everton immediately onto the back foot. The first chance of the day came in just 6th minute with new signing Sessegnon firing a deflected effort at the Everton goal with Tim Howard managing to adjust his feet and make a top quality save.

Within 50 seconds of this incident Sunderland had the ball in the back of the net, however it was ruled out, correctly with striker David Goodwillie moving into an offside position before beating Tim Howard to the ball and stabbing it into the net. However once again it was Everton who scored the first goal of the day with a wonderfully executed counter attacking move started by Phil Neville who played the ball to Vossen who turned and played a through ball to Lukaku, who in turn made a darting run down the right flank before stopping and finding Tim Cahill who scored a well placed finish from just outside of the Sunderland penalty area. A quick look around the pitch saw Sunderland faces drop after completely dominating the game they were 1 - 0 down thanks to a loss of concentration.

tim_cahill-celebra_1242386c.jpg

Cahill made it 6 in 6 league games with his goal against Sunderland

As soon as that goal went in it was easily visible that their was a shift in play and Everton began to control the ball more, and Vossen nearly made it 2 just moments later thanks to some wonderful work down the left flank from Lukaku who crossed and for Vossen to fire a shot narrowly wide grazing the post. Rodwell was the next Everton player to go close when he fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area for Craig Gordon to get a hand to it and push it out for a corner. The teams went in at half time with the score at 1 - 0, with Everton buoyed by their first half goal. Steve Bruce would certainly have a tough task to lift their side who gave it their all in the early stages, but despite this effort they had nothing to show for it, and to add insult suffered a sucker blow from a counter attack.

With the teams coming out from the break it was possible to see that neither side was going to make any changes. Sunderland attempted to start the half quickly and got players forward, but when this move came to an end courtesy of a John Heitinga interception, they quickly realised that they were short at the back. Jelle Vossen picked up the ball just inside the Everton half before finding Tim Cahill in the centre circle who in turn saw 17 year-old Romelu Lukaku in acres of space on the right flank and played a wonderfully weighted pass for him to chase. The Belgian got to the ball, and beat Titus Bramble with a drop of the shoulder and fired a placed finish past Gordon. Sunderland will be thinking de ja vu as once again they were undone by a quick counter attacking move.

Lukaku has delighted Everton fans with his quick adapting to the Premier League

Once that second goal went in for Everton, the game was well and truly over for Sunderland, they looked distraught and lost of ideas. Rodwell nearly made it 3 in the 56th minute shooting wide from just outside the area, with the Toffee's well and truly dominating the game now. Soon after the hour mark Everton were getting men forward and Tim Cahill was brought down be German Re. Mikel Arteta stood over the free kick and curled a fabulous ball to the far post for Phil Jagielka to score a powerful headed effort to take the game beyond Sunderland. With the game petering out it was apparent that the Sunderland players were becoming frustrated and picked up four yellow cards in quick succession as well as giving away cheap free kicks. However, the game ended 3 - 0, with Everton once again keeping a clean sheet.

In a match that could have gone the other way on another way, Andy Gray looked absolutely overjoyed with the teams performance and ability to capitalise when they had their opportunities. Despite seeing less of the ball Everton made the most of it and well and truly showed their quality and resilience at the back as Sunderland were defeated at the Stadium of Light. Tim Cahill picked up his third man of the match in the first six Premiership matches, as well as making it 6 goals in 6 appearances. After the match Andy Gray spoke of his delight with his team's performance, "I felt we were great today, Sunderland really gave us a tough game, and the scoreline really doesn't tell the whole story. They pressed us and pushed us back but with effectively three counter attacking moves we undid them and got our goals."

brilliant story mate, who knows maybe a title challenge on the cards espoescially with timmy chaill in usch good form! keep it up.

Gray praises 'stubborn' Everton defence

26.09.2010

28228.png

Andy Gray heaped praise on his defence after Everton continued their fantastic start to the season with a somewhat backs to the wall display. Gray said: "We defended very well, they never gave us any trouble with their attacking.

"The kind of pressure we were under was just balls into the box mostly, and with defenders like Phil Jagielka and Johnny Heitinga you know that these can cope with that, they were unbelievable today.

"The whole defensive unit did really well, really well. In the context of the way Sunderland have been playing at home this season and the performances they have put in, to come away with three points is a fantastic feeling."

PBYRNE_260211_160534_0_0431_r683600.jpg

Phil Jagielka was fantastic at the back and if not for Tim Cahill would have picked up MoM

"The way that we played today showed that we have resilience and when we have to defend, we have the ability to keep teams out." Gray added, "We scored from effectively three counter attacking moves which were expertly worked, you would not have expected that our strike force has only played 5 matches together, they had great understanding and if this is a sign of things to come I cannot wait to see where they can go."

This run means that Everton are now 6 matches unbeaten in the Premier League on 18 points, sitting 3 points clear of Manchester United in second place with 15 points from 6 matches, with surprise package Blackburn Rovers sitting in 3rd who are also unbeaten so far this season on 14 points. The Toffee's will no doubt be hoping that they can maintain this fantastic early season form going into October.

Everton look to busy October

01.10.2010

650.png

With Everton's form still in the ascendency, the Toffee's focus now turns to a busy October that will see them play 5 matches as well as seeing some players leave for international duty. After getting through September in such flying fashion brushing aside the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham they will no doubt fancy their chances as potential top four candidates early on in the season. Tim Cahill continues to show his quality as he scores 3 goals in 3 Premier League games which leaves him one goal behind Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the goal scoring charts.

So far Everton have gone 7 matches without conceding a goal and conceded just 1 goal in their first 9 games in all competitions, they will be hoping that they can maintain this fine run of defensive form going into October. After the match against Sunderland Andy Gray publicly praised his team defensively saying that they looked stubborn and hopes that this will continue. However with Tony Hibbert ruled out for potentially 2 months Andy Gray will no doubt have to look elsewhere for back up at right back with Phil Neville unlikely to be able to play games in all competitions.

A month that see's Everton face 4 out of their 5 matches being away from home, getting their home game out of the way against Wigan at Goodison Park. As well as Wigan, Everton then face up to Blackburn Rovers, who have been in fantastic form so far this season who and are lying just behind Manchester United in third place in the table as well as being unbeaten. Concerning the Carling Cup, Everton will no doubt fancy their chances against Championship struggler's Derby County, even though the Rams did knock out Owen Coyle's Bolton in the 3rd Round of the Carling Cup. With the season approaching the end of the first quarter there is growing belief that if Everton can maintain this form throughout October then they will be well and truly considered as top four candidates, and even potential title challengers.
